Learn those first, then add shortcuts for your own workflows.
Windows defines default behavior, but the active application, keyboard layout, Windows edition, hardware, Remote Desktop, and accessibility settings can change what a combination does. Microsoft documents the default Windows behavior and notes that applications can override shortcuts: Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference.

Window management and Snap Layouts
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Win+Left Arrow | Snap the active window left |
| Win+Right Arrow | Snap the active window right |
| Win+Up Arrow | Maximize or move the window within a snap arrangement |
| Win+Down Arrow | Restore or minimize the active window |
| Win+Z | Show Snap Layouts |
| Win+Home | Minimize or restore every window except the active one |
| Win+Shift+Left/Right Arrow | Move the active window to another monitor |
| Win+Shift+Up Arrow | Stretch the window vertically |
| Alt+Space | Open the active window’s system menu |
Snap choices can vary with screen size, display scaling, orientation, and the application. Full-screen games, remote sessions, and elevated or specialized apps may intercept these commands. The shortcut affects the focused window, not necessarily the window beneath the pointer.
Clipboard history and text editing
Use Clipboard history
- Press Win+V.
- If prompted, choose the option to turn Clipboard history on.
- Select a recent item to paste it; pin items you need to retain or clear entries from the panel.
If the panel does not appear, press Win+I, search Settings for “clipboard,” open Clipboard settings, enable Clipboard history, and try again. History can contain text, images, and other supported items. Do not treat it as a password manager: copied sensitive data may remain available.
Common editing commands
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X, Ctrl+V | Copy, cut, paste |
| Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y | Undo, redo where supported |
| Ctrl+A | Select all |
| Ctrl+Left/Right Arrow | Move by word |
| Shift+Arrow | Extend a selection |
| Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right Arrow | Select by word |
| Home, End | Move to the start or end of a line |
| Ctrl+Home, Ctrl+End | Move to the start or end of a document |
| Ctrl+Backspace, Ctrl+Delete | Delete the previous or next word in many text fields |
| Ctrl+Shift+V | Paste as plain text where the app supports it |
Editing shortcuts are widely supported, not guaranteed. Terminals, spreadsheets, rich-text editors, browsers, and remote sessions can assign different meanings. Microsoft specifically cautions that shortcut behavior varies by application: Windows shortcut reference.

Screenshot and recording shortcuts
| Shortcut | Result | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Win+Shift+S | Snipping Tool capture overlay | Select a region, window, or full screen. |
| Win+PrtScn | Full-screen capture saved as an image | Automatic file capture. |
| Alt+PrtScn | Active-window image copied to the clipboard | Capture only the current app. |
| PrtScn | Copies a screen image or follows configured behavior | Behavior depends on Windows configuration. |
| Win+G | Open Xbox Game Bar | Game and app recording tools. |
A copied capture is not automatically a saved file. Compact keyboards may require Fn with PrtScn; games, protected video, and vendor settings can block or alter captures.
Virtual desktops
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Win+Tab | Open Task View |
| Win+Ctrl+D | Create a new virtual desktop |
| Win+Ctrl+Right Arrow | Move to the desktop on the right |
| Win+Ctrl+Left Arrow | Move to the desktop on the left |
| Win+Ctrl+F4 | Close the current virtual desktop |
For example, keep email on Desktop 1, writing on Desktop 2, and communications on Desktop 3. Create one with Win+Ctrl+D, switch with Win+Ctrl+Left/Right Arrow, and use Win+Tab for a visual overview. Virtual desktops are not separate user accounts, virtual machines, or physical monitors. Closing one generally moves its open windows to another desktop rather than deleting the apps.
File Explorer shortcuts
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Win+E | Open File Explorer |
| F2 | Rename the selected item |
| F3 | Search |
| F4 | Display the address-bar list |
| Alt+D or Ctrl+L | Focus the address bar |
| Alt+Enter | Open Properties |
| Ctrl+Shift+N | Create a folder |
| Delete | Move the selected item to the Recycle Bin |
| Shift+Delete | Permanently delete in supported Windows file operations |
| Alt+Left/Right Arrow | Back or forward |
| Alt+Up Arrow | Go to the parent folder |
| Ctrl+W | Close the active Explorer window or tab |
Use Shift+Delete carefully: it bypasses the ordinary Recycle Bin workflow.

Built-in shortcuts require no extra software. For remapping, Microsoft PowerToys is a free, open-source option that also includes Shortcut Guide, FancyZones, and PowerToys Run: PowerToys documentation.
- Install PowerToys from Microsoft’s documentation.
- Open PowerToys Settings and select Keyboard Manager.
- Choose Remap a key or Remap a shortcut.
- Select the input key or combination, then the output key, shortcut, or text sequence.
- Choose OK or apply the mapping.
PowerToys must be running in the background. A mapping can target a specific application by its process name, not necessarily its displayed product name. Remappings do not work at the Windows login or password screen. Win+L, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and generally the Fn key cannot be remapped. Modifier remaps can break special keys or gestures, and Microsoft warns against using Keyboard Manager while gaming. Elevated applications may require PowerToys to run with administrator privileges; other low-level keyboard-hook utilities can conflict. See the complete limitations in Keyboard Manager documentation.

- Properly and responsive keys. What more could you ask for?
- It is much easier to refurbish the broken keycaps than replacing the whole keyboard. Don't hesitate and just do it today.
FancyZones is worth considering for ultrawide displays or three or more persistent zones; ordinary Windows snapping is enough for most users.
When a shortcut does not work
- Check which window has focus; shortcuts act on the focused app.
- Confirm the feature is enabled, especially Clipboard history and accessibility tools.
- Try the laptop’s Fn layer for PrtScn, Home, End, or function keys.
- Test outside the current game, full-screen app, terminal, or remote session.
- In Remote Desktop or a virtual machine, determine whether the host or guest receives the combination.
- If using PowerToys, confirm it is running, elevated when necessary, and not conflicting with another keyboard utility.
- Check whether a current Windows feature or configuration has reassigned the shortcut; assistant-related combinations can vary with Copilot availability and settings.
US and international layouts, Mac keyboards used with Windows, compact hardware, and vendor function layers can all change the physical keys you need to press. Microsoft’s current reference is the safest baseline for your Windows release: Windows keyboard shortcuts.
