There is not enough comparable evidence to responsibly rank and score ten just-in-time (JIT) access tools. The available official documentation supports a useful shortlist instead: four AWS-validated integrations, Microsoft Entra Privileged Identity Management (PIM), an Entra-to-AWS workflow, HashiCorp Boundary with Vault, BeyondTrust Privileged Remote Access, and Delinea Secret Server. They address different access needs, so the right choice depends on which systems and sessions you need to protect.
Why this is a shortlist, not a ranked top ten
A meaningful ranking would require comparable evidence about product capabilities, deployment requirements, pricing, and performance. The available official materials do not provide that across ten products, and they do not establish a consistent independent test. A product page or a vendor’s inclusion in a cloud partner list is not proof that it is better than another option.

The candidates below are therefore grouped by what the cited documentation establishes—not assigned scores or an overall order. AWS describes its listed integrations as validated solutions for common temporary elevated access requirements, and advises customers to choose based on their business, cloud architecture, and budget. That validation is not an endorsement of a market-wide ranking.
What JIT access does
AWS defines temporary elevated access, also known as JIT access, as a way “to request, approve, and track the use of a permission to perform a specific task during a specified time.” In practice, an eligible user requests elevated permission for a business reason; policy determines whether approval or other checks are required; and access ends when it is revoked or expires.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
That differs from standing privilege, which remains available outside a specific task window. JIT is a workflow and a control, not one universal product category: activating a cloud role and brokering an SSH session protect different access surfaces. AWS’s IAM Identity Center documentation says JIT supplements permission sets and MFA; it does not replace them.
What the documented options establish
This table summarizes the scope of the evidence for each option. It is not a feature-parity matrix: the official sources describe different types of products and integrations, and several do not establish detailed workflows or comparative capabilities.

| BeyondTrust Privileged Remote Access | BeyondTrust’s product page establishes a privileged remote access product relevant to this category. | The cited page does not establish enough detail to compare its JIT workflow, coverage, or cost with the other options. |
| Delinea Secret Server | Delinea’s product page establishes a PAM and password-vault product relevant to privileged access. | The cited page does not establish a like-for-like JIT workflow comparison; check whether its current offering fits a need for temporary access rather than credential vaulting. |

How to choose by access need
For temporary cloud-role activation
Start with the identity and permission systems your organization already operates. Entra PIM is documented for eligible role activation with policy-driven checks and automatic expiry. For AWS accounts, review the AWS-validated integrations against your architecture and operating requirements rather than treating AWS’s list as a ranking.

For an Entra-to-AWS workflow, AWS’s implementation guide describes users requesting specific AWS permission sets through Entra PIM, with access granted for a configured duration. The guide’s prerequisites include Entra ID P1 or P2 licensing, AWS IAM Identity Center, and identity-provider provisioning. Its 60-minute access window is an example configuration, not a universal product limit. AWS records correction notices dated 2025-06-19 and 2026-09-22 on the guide.
For remote infrastructure sessions
If the requirement is to control access to hosts or critical systems over SSH, RDP, or TCP, evaluate session-brokering approaches separately from cloud-role activation. HashiCorp describes Boundary with Vault as a way to provide time-limited proxied access, inject single-use credentials, and record and audit sessions. Confirm how those capabilities map to the protocols, targets, deployment model, and edition you plan to use.

BeyondTrust Privileged Remote Access and Delinea Secret Server are relevant products to investigate, but the cited product pages do not provide enough comparable detail to score their JIT workflows. In particular, distinguish temporary access from password vaulting: a PAM product’s presence in the category does not by itself establish that it delivers the workflow you need.

Microsoft’s cloud security benchmark also describes just-in-time VM access using Azure Bastion and Defender for Cloud. This is a network-access scenario for virtual machines, distinct from activating a directory or cloud role. Assess it against the ports, machines, and operating controls in scope rather than using it as a proxy for all privileged access.

Comparison criteria that matter
Use the same questions for each option, and record the deployment context alongside the answer. Avoid attributing an integration’s capabilities to one product alone.
- Target access: Identify whether you need cloud account or directory role activation, VM management-port access, SSH/RDP/database sessions, or vendor access.
- Privilege model: Determine whether the option activates an eligible role, brokers a session, injects credentials, or primarily vaults passwords. Check whether permissions can be limited to the task.
- Request controls: Verify eligibility, business justification, approvals, MFA, and any risk or device conditions your policy requires.
- Time bounds: Confirm configurable duration, automatic expiry, early revocation, and what happens if provisioning or revocation is delayed.
- Visibility: Check what is logged: grants, administrative sessions, commands or actions, and alerts. Session recording and an access-grant audit trail are not interchangeable.
- Integrations and operations: Map identity-provider, cloud, infrastructure, provisioning, deployment, setup, and emergency-access requirements.
- Commercial fit: Verify licensing prerequisites and obtain current pricing for the actual deployment. Do not infer cost from unrelated tiers or another product’s packaging.
Controls to keep alongside JIT
AWS’s implementation guidance recommends least privilege, access only for the minimum time needed, an eligibility process, approval, and auditing of grants and activity. Automate work where possible; reserve direct human access for tasks that require it. AWS also recommends establishing emergency access for business continuity.
Microsoft’s guidance warns that PIM and PAM controls do not address device compromise. Include endpoint trust and device security in the access design rather than assuming that temporary privilege alone makes a compromised device safe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBottom line on the 2026 options
Use the shortlist to decide what to evaluate, not as a league table. Cloud-role activation, VM network access, and controlled infrastructure sessions solve different problems. Define the protected resource and required workflow first, then verify implementation details, licensing, and operational behavior against the official documentation and your environment.
