The right iPhone camera accessory solves a specific problem: use a tripod or mount for steadier framing, a microphone for clearer recorded speech, a portable light when a close subject lacks illumination, or a gimbal for smoother moving video. None upgrades the iPhone’s camera sensor, and the best choice depends on your phone, case and how you shoot.
Choose an accessory for the problem you want to solve

For still photos and stationary video: start with a mount or tripod
A tripod or mount keeps the phone in a chosen position, which is useful for self-timer portraits, group shots, repeatable framing and hands-free stationary video. It addresses stability and positioning—not image quality from the camera sensor itself.

Check how the phone attaches and whether the specific holder accommodates your iPhone with its case on. A remote or grip may be included with some setups, but do not assume one is bundled; check the product listing. Apple recommends checking for the Made for iPhone label when buying third-party electronic accessories. Apple says developers certify labeled accessories to meet its performance standards; the label does not establish that an accessory is compatible with every phone or case. For spoken video: consider an external microphone
If viewers need to hear speech clearly, an external microphone can address audio capture more directly than a camera accessory. Apple’s catalog includes RØDE microphone examples, but the catalog does not establish how any microphone performs against another.
Before buying, confirm the microphone works with your particular iPhone and recording setup. Check its connector, whether an adapter or wireless receiver is needed, and whether those items are included. Compatibility and connection requirements depend on the specific phone and microphone.

For close subjects in dim conditions: add light only if needed
A portable light can help illuminate a nearby subject when available light is inadequate. Apple’s catalog includes a ShiftCam LED selfie light. A light is situational: it does not change the camera hardware, and it may be unnecessary when existing light is sufficient.
Check how the light mounts to the phone or setup, how it is powered and whether it suits the subject distance and the way you hold the iPhone. Confirm those details on the specific listing rather than assuming one accessory will fit every model or case.

For moving video: a gimbal solves a different problem
A gimbal is worth considering when you want smoother footage while the phone is moving. It is not a universal upgrade for still photos, and it does a different job from a tripod: a tripod holds a position for static framing, while a gimbal is intended for moving shots.
Because compatibility varies, check the gimbal listing for your iPhone model, case fit and mounting requirements before buying. Consider portability as well; a moving-video setup may be more equipment than you need for stationary clips or stills.

Try built-in framing settings before buying an external lens
On supported iPhone models, the Main camera offers selectable 24 mm, 28 mm and 35 mm framing settings. iPhone Air has a 26 mm default and alternate 28 mm and 35 mm framing settings. These options let you adjust framing without adding an external lens, but availability depends on the model. Apple’s iPhone camera settings guide describes the settings.
