For most people seeking Apple’s most capable current iPhone in a manageable size, the iPhone 18 Pro is the strongest spec-based pick. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want a larger 6.9-inch screen and Apple’s highest published video-playback rating in the current range. For a lower starting price, Apple’s U.S. store lists the iPhone 17e at $699, the iPhone 16 at $799, and the iPhone 17 at $899. These recommendations are based on published specifications and prices, not hands-on testing.
This comparison covers models listed for purchase in Apple’s U.S. store as of October 4, 2026. Prices are U.S. Apple starting prices, not global prices or guaranteed retailer prices, and may change. The iPhone Duo is included separately as an upcoming preorder, not a phone available to buy on that date.

Which iPhone should you buy in 2026?
Start with how much you want to spend, then decide how much screen, battery rating, and camera flexibility you need. Apple’s U.S. prices make the 17e the least expensive currently listed model. The 16 costs less than the standard 17 at Apple’s displayed starting prices. The 18 Pro models are the premium choices, with three 48MP rear cameras and Apple’s A20 Pro chip.

Apple’s store displayed the Pro pair from $1,199, but Apple’s launch announcement sets the Pro Max starting price at $1,299; the table uses the model-specific launch figures. - Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.

Best for a high-end iPhone that is not the largest: iPhone 18 Pro
The 18 Pro combines a 6.3-inch display with Apple’s A20 Pro and three 48MP rear cameras: main, ultra-wide, and telephoto. It is the better fit on paper if you want the Pro camera system and chip but prefer the smaller of the two Pro sizes. Comfort is personal, so if possible, handle both sizes before choosing.
Best for a large display and Apple’s top battery rating: iPhone 18 Pro Max
The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display and Apple rates it for up to 45 hours of video playback, compared with up to 36 hours for the 18 Pro. It costs $100 more at the U.S. starting prices above. Pick it for the larger viewing area and higher stated battery rating, not because the estimate guarantees a particular day-to-day runtime.

Best for the lowest listed Apple price: iPhone 17e
At $699, the 17e is Apple’s least expensive iPhone listed for purchase in the U.S. store on the snapshot date. The available product information here does not establish a detailed feature comparison with the 16 or 17, so do not assume its lower price means it is the best value for your needs. Check the current configuration and features on Apple’s product page before buying.

Best lower-priced alternative to the standard 17: iPhone 16
Apple lists the iPhone 16 at $799, $100 below the standard 17’s $899 starting price. Tom’s Guide describes the 16 as a lower-cost Apple Intelligence-ready option and notes that the 17 has an upgraded ultra-wide camera. That is editorial context, not a controlled side-by-side test here. If the 16’s current price is your priority, compare its exact features and storage with the 17 before deciding whether the newer model’s camera changes matter to you.

iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max: what is actually different?
The core camera and chip specifications are shared: each has Apple’s A20 Pro and three 48MP rear cameras. The main decision is the size-price-battery trade-off, rather than a different rear-camera count.
| Specification | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max |
|---|---|---|
| Display size | 6.3 inches | 6.9 inches |
| U.S. launch starting price | $1,199 | $1,299 |
| Storage options | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, 2TB |
| Chip | A20 Pro | A20 Pro |
| Rear cameras | 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide, 48MP telephoto | 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide, 48MP telephoto |
| Apple video-playback rating | Up to 36 hours | Up to 45 hours |
Apple describes its battery figures as typical-use estimates based on preproduction devices and a representative usage profile. They are manufacturer ratings, not a promise of runtime for every person; settings, signal, apps, and usage affect battery life. No independent, named cross-model battery or performance benchmark is available for a like-for-like comparison here.

Camera flexibility, not a guaranteed photo-quality ranking
Apple lists a variable-aperture 48MP main camera on the 18 Pro pair, alongside 48MP ultra-wide and telephoto cameras. The front camera is 18MP Center Stage. These specifications establish the cameras available, but megapixel counts and hardware alone cannot prove that a phone will produce better-looking photos in every light or for every subject.

The 18 Pro models are offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. Choose a storage tier with your photo, video, app, and offline-download habits in mind, and compare the actual price of that configuration rather than relying only on the starting price. Apple’s technical page says the 18 Pro models use eSIM and are not compatible with physical SIM cards; check that your carrier and country support the required setup before ordering.

Is the iPhone Air worth it?
The Air’s clearest established case is for someone who wants a 6.5-inch display but does not need the two rear cameras listed for the 6.3-inch iPhone 17. Apple identifies the Air as having one rear camera and no physical SIM tray. The 17 has two rear cameras. Camera count does not establish image quality, and the available specifications do not justify declaring either model the better photographer’s phone.
At Apple’s U.S. starting prices, the Air is $200 above the standard 17. Consider whether its larger display and eSIM-only configuration fit your priorities and carrier before paying the difference. Do not infer a weight, thinness, or camera-performance advantage from the model name or camera count alone.
Is iPhone 16 still worth buying?
It can be worth considering if Apple’s $799 U.S. starting price is current when you shop and its feature set meets your needs. It is $100 below the standard 17 in Apple’s listed prices. Tom’s Guide identifies Apple Intelligence readiness as a reason to consider the 16 and says the 17’s ultra-wide camera is upgraded; treat that as an editorial comparison, not a guarantee of a particular photo result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore choosing it, compare the exact storage and features on sale. Apple’s model-comparison page includes older generations, but appearing on a comparison page does not mean an older model is currently sold new by Apple. The current U.S. store listing, rather than the comparison page alone, is the guide to Apple’s present new-purchase lineup.
What about the iPhone Duo?
Apple’s U.S. store shows the iPhone Duo at $1,999 for preorder on October 16, 2026. That date is after the October 4 snapshot used here, so it should be treated as upcoming rather than available to buy on October 4. Its price is a U.S. Apple listing and is not a verified retailer or international price.
Quick Recap
Before you buy
- Confirm the price for your configuration. Starting prices do not tell you the cost of higher storage, and Apple or retailer prices may change.
- Check carrier and SIM support. In particular, the 18 Pro models and Air have no physical SIM support according to Apple’s specifications; verify eSIM compatibility where you live.
- Choose size in person if possible. The Pro pair spans 6.3 and 6.9 inches, while the Air is 6.5 inches. Screen size alone does not establish comfort or handling.
- Separate ratings from real-world testing. Apple’s video-playback hours are stated estimates. They should not be read as independent battery test results or guaranteed daily use.
- Verify stock and promotions at checkout. Listed Apple starting prices do not confirm current retailer inventory, sale prices, or eligibility for carrier trade-in credits.
