There is no verified universal Insta360 preset for Gaussian Splatting: available modes and controls vary by camera model and firmware. Start with the highest resolution your camera can sustain while recording sharp footage in the scene’s lighting, keep exposure and white balance consistent where possible, and capture overlapping views from changing physical positions. If you record video, extract a smaller set of useful frames instead of feeding every frame into reconstruction.
Which resolution and frame rate should you use?
Use your camera’s highest practical resolution, but choose a mode that still produces clear, sharp frames in the available light. Resolution by itself does not ensure a good splat: the selected images also need texture, overlap and useful differences in viewpoint.

Insta360 X3
For the X3, Insta360 recommends 8K at 30 fps for well-lit general scenes and 4K at 30 fps for night or low-light scenes. These are the manufacturer’s camera recommendations, not a tested Gaussian Splatting preset, and they should not be assumed to apply to other Insta360 models. Other Insta360 models
Check the documentation for your exact camera and firmware before choosing a mode. Insta360 video parameters can include shutter, ISO and white balance, alongside resolution and frame rate, but the available choices vary by model. Insta360’s support guidance on video parameters describes these controls; it does not establish a universal setting for Gaussian Splatting.

How should you move and cover the scene?
Walk around the subject or space so the capture includes views from different physical positions. Turning in place changes the camera’s direction, but does not provide the same viewpoint variation as moving around the scene.
- Keep substantial visual overlap between neighboring views so reconstruction software can match details across images.
- As a practical target, COLMAP’s image-based reconstruction tutorial recommends that each object appear in at least three images.
- Include visible surface texture where possible. Featureless areas give image-matching systems fewer distinctive details to track.

How can you keep exposure and lighting consistent?
When your model allows it, avoid large exposure or white-balance changes between views. Similar illumination helps keep the images consistent for reconstruction. Insta360 identifies shutter, ISO and white balance as video parameters, but the sources here do not establish a universally reliable shutter speed or ISO for Gaussian Splatting. Do not treat a particular numeric value as a guaranteed preset.
Prefer scenes with even, usable light and visible texture. Strong high-dynamic-range lighting and specular reflections can make views harder to match; avoid them where practical. If reducing resolution is necessary to get clearer footage in low light, favor sharp images over a higher-resolution mode that produces blurred or noisy frames.

How many frames should you extract from video?
Extract frames at intervals that preserve meaningful changes in viewpoint without creating a huge set of near-duplicates. COLMAP advises down-sampling video input but does not prescribe a universal extraction rate. Choose intervals based on how quickly you move and how much the scene changes between views; check that neighboring selected images still overlap and that important objects remain visible in multiple images. A practical capture checklist
- Confirm the camera and mode. Look up resolution, frame-rate and exposure options for your exact Insta360 model and firmware. Use the X3’s 8K/30 fps well-lit or 4K/30 fps low-light recommendation only if you are recording with an X3.
- Set up for consistent footage. Where available, keep exposure and white balance stable through the capture. Do not rely on a universal shutter or ISO number.
- Move around the subject or space. Capture from changing physical positions, with overlapping views; aim for each object to appear in at least three images.
- Check the scene. Look for clear detail and similar lighting across views. Where possible, avoid featureless surfaces, harsh lighting differences and strong reflections.
- Review and extract frames. Select sharp frames that show useful viewpoint changes. Down-sample the video rather than automatically using every frame, while preserving enough overlap for matching.
What about Insta360 Spatial Capture?
A report published on October 2, 2026 describes Insta360 Spatial Capture as a beta feature and says compatible 360 cameras must record at least 5.7K at 30 fps. That report is secondary, not an official compatibility statement. Treat the requirement as provisional and confirm supported models and current requirements in Insta360 documentation before relying on it. Spatial Capture should not be confused with a universal Gaussian Splatting preset.
