A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For website screenshots where text and fine edges must stay crisp, choose PNG or lossless WebP. PNG is the conservative default when an API supports it; lossless WebP can reduce file size while preserving image data. Lossy WebP may be smaller still, but inspect text, icons, and thin borders at the size people will actually see. Before choosing, verify the screenshot API’s supported formats and the encoding it really returns.
PNG or WebP: which should you choose?
The right format depends on what matters most: faithful pixels, smaller files, compatibility with the receiving system, or transparency. PNG and WebP both support transparency, and both can be used for lossless screenshots. WebP also supports lossy encoding, which trades some image detail for a smaller file.

| Need | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Faithful text, icons, and sharp edges | PNG or lossless WebP | Lossless encoding preserves image data; lossy compression can blur sharp features or add colored fringes. |
| Smaller output without lossy artifacts | Lossless WebP | MDN Web Docs says lossless WebP images are typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG format. This is a general comparison, not a guarantee for any individual screenshot or API. |
| More size reduction | Lossy WebP, with a tested quality setting | It can reduce file size, but visual quality depends on the image and encoding settings. Check representative screenshots before adopting it. |
| Alpha transparency | PNG or WebP | Both formats support transparency. |
| A conservative API choice | PNG, if the API supports it | Some browser-level capture paths default to PNG, but a hosted service may use different defaults. |
Why screenshot content changes the decision
Text and fine lines are sensitive to lossy compression
Website screenshots often contain small text, one-pixel borders, charts, interface icons, and other high-contrast edges. Lossy compression can soften these details or create colored fringes around them. MDN Web Docs recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art because those artifacts are especially noticeable in such content.

Lossless WebP can save space, but the result varies
MDN Web Docs reports that lossless WebP images are typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG format. Treat this as a broad format comparison, not a promised saving for every webpage, encoder, or screenshot API. Actual output size depends on the captured content and the encoder’s implementation.
For an API workflow, compare representative pages: include text-heavy dashboards, pages with large photographs, and captures with transparency if those are part of your use case. Check both output size and whether the image remains suitable for its downstream purpose.

Check what the screenshot API actually returns
Do not infer the encoding from a filename extension or assume that all screenshot APIs share browser defaults. Check the provider’s documentation and inspect the response’s Content-Type header. The MIME types are image/png for PNG and image/webp for WebP.
- Confirm the accepted format names and whether the API supports PNG, WebP, or both.
- Check whether WebP is lossless or lossy by default and whether a quality parameter is supported.
- Verify the actual response MIME type rather than relying on the requested format or saved filename.
- Check transparency behavior and output dimensions if your workflow depends on them.
- Test the output in the systems that will consume it, such as an image viewer, document pipeline, visual-diff tool, or downstream API.
Defaults belong to specific implementations. MDN documents PNG as the default for the WebDriver BiDi screenshot command when no format is specified. Canvas export also falls back to PNG when the requested type is omitted or unsupported. Those behaviors do not establish the defaults or supported formats of every hosted screenshot service.

Pixel comparison, OCR, or archiving
Keep an original or lossless artifact when later work depends on exact pixels, such as image-difference testing, OCR-sensitive review, or archival comparison. This is a practical consequence of the distinction between lossless and lossy encoding, not a special requirement imposed by a standard.
Storage or transfer limits
Try lossless WebP if the API and every downstream consumer accept it. Measure the actual files produced by your representative pages. If you need lossy WebP, select a quality setting only after checking that the resulting text and edges remain clear at the final display size.

Broad compatibility or unknown consumers
Use PNG as a conservative starting point when the specific API supports it and the output will pass through systems whose WebP handling you have not confirmed. Modern browser support for WebP is not the only consideration: the receiving application or service must also accept the format. API compatibility is provider- and consumer-specific.

The WebP media type is image/webp; confirm the actual response header from the API you use.
Does a .webp filename prove that the response is WebP?
No. Verify the response’s Content-Type header instead of relying on the filename.
