Start with the installation location and available power, then decide whether you need continuous or event recording, local or cloud storage, and compatibility with your smart-home platform. Those choices narrow the field more reliably than resolution or a headline feature alone.
Choose the camera around where it will go
Decide first whether the camera will monitor an indoor room, a doorway, a driveway, or an exposed outdoor area. Check the exact model’s indoor/outdoor rating and weather resistance, then match its field of view or pan-and-tilt movement to the space. A wide view is not automatically better: the useful question is whether the camera can cover the intended area and capture enough detail at the distance that matters.

Power is another placement constraint. A fixed wired or Power over Ethernet (PoE) camera can suit a location where cabling is practical; a battery camera can be placed where running a cable is inconvenient but will need charging or a suitable solar arrangement. WIRED describes an Eufy PoE kit with four cameras and a 2 TB network video recorder (NVR) for buyers able to run Ethernet. That is an installation option, not evidence of a brand-wide reliability advantage. WIRED’s tested camera guide covers wired and other setups.

Compare coverage and night performance, not resolution alone
Resolution describes the image’s pixel dimensions, but it cannot tell you by itself whether a face, package, or vehicle will be identifiable at the camera’s installed distance. Consider field of view, lens position, night-vision method and stated range alongside resolution. Manufacturer specifications describe a particular model; they are not a shared, independent test across brands.
#1 Best Overall

The indoor/outdoor TP-Link Tapo C236 is one concrete example for buyers considering local recording. TP-Link’s US product page lists a maximum resolution of 2304 × 1296 pixels, an 85° diagonal field of view, and infrared night vision up to 40 feet (12 metres). These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently verified comparative results. TP-Link Tapo C236 specifications
Choose recording and storage before comparing subscriptions
Separate four questions when checking a camera: does live view work without a plan, are alerts available without a plan, can the camera record locally, and can you save and review recordings without a subscription? The answer can differ by model and service, so confirm it on the exact product page rather than assuming every camera from a brand behaves alike.

- Hub, onboard storage, or NVR: Some systems use one of these instead of a card in each camera. Check what equipment is included and how footage is accessed; Eufy’s camera guide describes its system options.
Compare the full cost only after deciding what storage and retention you need. Current cross-brand prices and a complete subscription-cost comparison are not established here, so there is no sound basis for naming a cheapest overall camera.
Check alerts, privacy controls, and ecosystem compatibility
Detection labels such as person, pet, or vehicle indicate what a camera claims to recognize; they do not establish how accurately it will do so in your home. Activity zones can reduce notifications from parts of the view you do not care about, while privacy zones can mask areas you do not want recorded. Verify the available controls on the exact model and consider where footage is stored, who can access shared accounts, and how recording can be paused.

A practical shortlist checklist
- Fix the location: Identify the area to cover and verify the exact camera’s indoor/outdoor rating.
- Choose power: Decide whether an outlet, wired/PoE connection, battery, or suitable solar arrangement works there.
- Match the view: Check field of view or pan/tilt capability, resolution, and stated night-vision performance for the actual distance.
- Set recording expectations: Confirm local, hub/NVR, onboard, or cloud storage, and whether recording and playback require a plan.
- Check daily-use features: Review alert types, activity and privacy zones, app/platform compatibility, and relevant connectivity support.
- Review privacy and upkeep: Understand where footage is stored and who can access it; account for card purchases, battery charging, and any recurring plan you choose.
For broader comparisons of tested models and trade-offs, consult WIRED and Tom’s Guide. Their editorial comparisons are useful context, but neither turns one model into a universal winner for every home.
