A strong starting squad in Last War: Survival has two durable defense heroes in front and three attackers or support heroes behind them. If you have five viable heroes of the same troop type—Tank, Aircraft/Air, or Missile Vehicle—using all five together is a useful default because community guides report the largest same-type composition bonus at five. It is not a universal best lineup: your heroes’ roles and development, the opposing squad, and the activity can all change the choice.
The best squad setup starts with roles, not a list of names
Every squad has five hero positions: two in the front row and three in the back, according to Last War Vault’s 2026 guide. For a dependable general-purpose arrangement, use the front row for your most durable defense heroes and place attackers and support heroes behind them. Google Play’s editorial guide describes those three broad hero classes and recommends the same role-first placement.

This arrangement is a starting point, not a promise that one fixed lineup will outperform every alternative. The Google Play guide cautions, “Your strongest hero squad might not fit in the kind of formation we suggested earlier.” Apply the principle to the heroes you actually own and have developed rather than copying a generic named lineup.

Front row: prioritize staying power
Put defense heroes in the two front positions. Their job in the formation is to provide the defensive core while the other heroes occupy the back row. If your roster has more than two plausible defenders, choose based on which ones are developed enough to be useful and which combination leaves room for the damage or support your squad needs. The available guides do not establish one universally correct pair of named heroes.

Back row: preserve room for damage and support
Place attack and support heroes in the three back positions. Do not fill these slots with attackers solely because they share a troop type if doing so leaves the squad without adequate defense or useful support. The point of the basic layout is to cover different roles while making the best composition bonus your roster can reasonably support.
When to use one troop type across all five positions
Last War guides identify three troop types for squad composition: Tank, Aircraft or Air, and Missile Vehicle. When you have five usable heroes of one type, a five-hero single-type squad is a practical default. Last War Vault reports that the largest listed composition bonus comes from five heroes of the same type. That bonus can make a specialized squad attractive, but it does not prove that one type always beats the others or that a weaker fifth hero is automatically worth including.

Think of “viable” as a roster decision: the hero is available, developed enough to contribute, and can fit into the squad without sacrificing the roles you need. A five-hero type match that forces you to field an underdeveloped defender or leaves the back row poorly suited to the activity may be worse for your account than a mixed squad.

| Composition reported | Reported bonus to HP, Attack, and Defense | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Three heroes of one type | +5% | A smaller same-type core while keeping two other slots flexible. |
| Three heroes of one type plus two of another | +10% | A mixed lineup with a larger reported bonus than the three-hero composition. |
| Four heroes of one type | +15% | A near-mono lineup that leaves one slot open to another type. |
| Five heroes of one type | +20% | The largest same-type bonus listed in the guide. |
These are the compositions and percentages as Last War Vault reports them; the guide’s figures should not be treated as independently verified or as proof that every squad receives the same practical benefit in every mode. The relevant choice is not simply “largest percentage wins.” Consider the bonus alongside front-line durability, back-line damage and support, and the strength of the heroes available to fill each slot.
Choose the formation your roster can actually support
Use this sequence whenever you rebuild a squad. It prevents a composition bonus from becoming the only factor in the decision.

- Pick two front-line defenders. Start with the defense heroes you can field at a useful development level. Put them in the two front positions.
- Fill the three back positions by role. Add attackers and support heroes that make the squad functional for the activity you are preparing for.
- Count troop types. Identify whether your five selected heroes form a three-, four-, or five-hero same-type group, or the reported three-plus-two mix. Compare the resulting guide-reported bonus in the table above.
- Check the strength of every slot. If reaching a higher same-type count means replacing a useful, developed hero with one that is not yet ready, compare the real squad you can field—not an idealized lineup you do not currently have.
- Adjust for the opponent or activity. Keep the role layout as your baseline, then decide whether the type bonus or a better role fit matters more for the matchup or mode.
- Confirm the current in-game details. Check the formation or activity rules in the game before committing resources or assuming a guide-reported bonus is still active and unchanged.
How to break a tie between a mono squad and a mixed squad
If both options have reasonable role coverage, compare the five-hero lineup as a whole. A mono-type squad is the cleaner choice when all five heroes are viable and the reported bonus does not cost you an important role. A mixed squad is reasonable when it gives you stronger or better-developed heroes, a more useful front row, or support and attack coverage better suited to the task. The sources do not establish a formula for weighing those trade-offs, so avoid treating a percentage bonus as a complete prediction of the fight.
Which composition should you use for different activities?
Packsify names PvP, VS Kill Day, Desert Storm Battlefield, and Zombie Siege as contexts in which squad composition may matter. Those examples are reasons to reassess your lineup, not evidence that one troop type has a proven advantage in any of them. The supplied guides do not establish a type-by-type counter chart or a best named lineup for those activities.
Best Value
For a general-purpose squad
Use the two-defender, three-backline setup first. If five viable heroes share a type, try the mono-type arrangement as your default. If they do not, retain the best role coverage you can field and use a mixed composition rather than forcing a type match with unsuitable heroes.
For PvP and VS Kill Day
Review the actual opponent and the heroes you can bring before switching squads. The available evidence supports considering the opponent and your roster; it does not support claims such as “Aircraft always beats Tank” or a fixed formation for every PvP fight. Make changes based on the squad in front of you and the heroes you have developed, not an assumed universal type matchup.
For Desert Storm Battlefield and Zombie Siege
Check the activity’s current requirements and your intended role in it. Packsify identifies both as relevant contexts, but the available guides do not provide reliable event-specific hero lists, positioning exceptions, or troop-type rankings. Keep the standard role formation unless the activity or your own plan gives you a concrete reason to change it.

Advanced mono-squad bonuses: verify unlock conditions in-game
Last War Hub separately reports additional mono-squad benefits involving an Exclusive Weapon same-type bonus at Lv20 and a mono-squad stat bonus unlocked after Capital occupation at HQ32. These details are guide-reported mechanics, not a timeless guarantee: eligibility, wording, and availability can change. Check the relevant weapon and Capital-related information in your game before building around either unlock. Do not assume that a hero or account has these benefits simply because the squad is mono-type.
Common formation mistakes to avoid
- Putting attackers in front just to complete a type match. Begin with defense heroes in the front row; weigh a same-type bonus only after the positions and roles make sense.
- Copying a named lineup without matching its roster. A recommendation cannot account for heroes you have not unlocked or developed. Use role and type principles to adapt the squad.
- Assuming a bigger bonus guarantees a win. The reported percentages describe a composition bonus, not a complete battle outcome or a demonstrated matchup ranking.
- Using one squad unchanged for every context. PvP, VS Kill Day, Desert Storm Battlefield, and Zombie Siege are all named as relevant settings by Packsify. Reconsider the lineup when the opponent or activity changes, while avoiding unsupported type-counter assumptions.
- Treating guide-reported mechanics as official or permanent. The numerical composition bonuses and additional mono-squad unlock details cited above come from community guides. Confirm current details in-game.
A practical rule for rebuilding your squad
Start with two developed defense heroes in front and three attackers or support heroes in back. Among lineups with sensible role coverage, favor five heroes of one troop type when all five are viable; otherwise use the strongest balanced lineup your roster supports and take the same-type bonus you can reasonably earn. Reassess for the opponent, activity, and current in-game rules rather than searching for a single formation that is best for every account.
