Choose one that supports the assets and signing workflow you actually use, lets you review transactions in a way you can understand, and offers a backup and recovery process you can protect. The device helps manage private keys, but the recovery phrase is still a critical secret: someone who gets it may be able to restore access to your crypto.
What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—protect
A hardware wallet manages the keys used to authorize transactions. Its backup phrase is the recovery mechanism: Trezor says a wallet backup can restore access if the device is lost, damaged, or reset, and Ledger warns that anyone who obtains a recovery phrase may access the associated assets. The device and its backup therefore need separate protection. A well-protected device does not make a phrase safe if it is copied, disclosed, stolen, or lost.

Keep the phrase offline and private. Do not photograph it, email it, put it in cloud storage, or enter it on a computer or phone. Follow the manufacturer’s device-based recovery procedure instead. Record every word exactly and in order, then verify the record using the wallet’s own process. If both the device and its backup are lost, access may be lost too.
How to choose a wallet for your use
Confirm assets and software support
Check support for the exact coins, tokens, and transaction workflows you use on the specific model and its associated software. A brand-wide asset claim does not establish that every model or app supports every asset. Manufacturer lists can change, so confirm current support before buying and again before relying on a particular recovery or signing workflow.

Decide how you want to review transactions
Consider what details appear on the device’s own display before it signs. A screen is useful only to the extent that it shows information you can meaningfully check. Vendor comparisons describe screens and clear-signing capabilities differently; look at the device-specific documentation for the transactions you expect to approve rather than treating a broad comparison as a neutral benchmark.
Match connectivity to your workflow
Connection methods affect convenience and the steps involved in signing, but they are model-specific. Coinkite describes QR-code or MicroSD signing options for its Bitcoin-only products. Other devices rely on USB, Bluetooth, or companion applications. Choose a workflow you can operate consistently and verify which connections are available on the exact model.

Understand the backup and recovery format
Backup formats are not interchangeable assumptions. Trezor documents BIP39 12- or 24-word backups and SLIP39 20-word backups across models and setup dates. Its Safe 5 and Safe 7 guide describes a 20-word SLIP39 single-share backup as the default, with optional multi-share backup, and lists BIP39 support. Confirm the current setup options and compatibility with other recovery tools before relying on portability.

With a multi-share SLIP39 backup, recovery depends on retaining enough shares to meet the configured threshold. Losing more shares than the threshold allows can make recovery impossible. Ledger documents a standard 24-word recovery phrase. BitBox advertises a microSD backup workflow for the compared device; understand where that backup is stored and who could access it just as you would with written words.

Source-backed options, by fit
The descriptions below reflect manufacturer documentation and comparisons, not independent hands-on testing or a neutral product ranking. Treat vendor statements as claims to verify against the exact model and current documentation.
| Option | What the cited manufacturer material describes | Best fit to investigate | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trezor Safe 5 / Safe 7 | Trezor documents a default 20-word SLIP39 single-share backup, optional multi-share backup, and BIP39 support. | Someone comparing documented backup formats and share-based recovery. | Current model setup options and compatibility with other recovery tools; support for your exact assets is not stated here. |
| Ledger | Ledger’s manufacturer comparison describes multiple models, broad asset support, on-device transaction review, and a standard 24-word recovery phrase. | Someone who wants to compare several models and review transaction details on-device. | Whether the precise asset and workflow are supported on the chosen model; the comparison’s broad claims do not guarantee support for every asset. |
| BitBox02 Nova | BitBox’s comparison describes open-source firmware and app, a secure-chip design, and a microSD backup workflow. | Someone weighing the advertised microSD backup workflow and the vendor’s software and hardware design claims. | The same comparison lists different app and asset support across products; verify the exact workflow and assets for this device. |
| COLDCARD | Coinkite presents its products as Bitcoin-only and describes QR-code or MicroSD signing workflows. | Someone seeking a Bitcoin-only workflow who is comfortable with the documented signing steps. | Confirm the model, current firmware guidance, and incident notice discussed below before relying on a device or seed. |
How to store and verify a seed phrase
- Use the wallet’s documented setup. Create or record the backup using the manufacturer’s instructions; do not substitute a phrase generated or stored on a computer or phone.
- Write each word in order. Check spelling and sequence against the device’s instructions. A phrase with a missing or incorrect word may not restore the intended wallet.
- Verify the backup using the manufacturer’s procedure. Do this during setup, while you still have access to the device and can correct a recording error.
- Store it offline and privately. Protect it from physical damage and from anyone who might obtain or copy it. Do not create a screenshot, photograph, email, or cloud copy.
- Use only the device’s recovery process when needed. Trezor says support will never ask for the backup; treat any request to disclose it as unsafe.
Would a metal backup help?
A metal backup can be a physical-durability option for someone concerned about damage to a paper record. Trezor names Keep Metal and Coldcard lists Seedplate, but the reviewed manufacturer material does not establish that one plate is universally preferable or that metal is required. Metal does not protect against theft or disclosure: it remains a readable recovery secret.

What seed-phrase security figures do—and do not—mean
Trezor’s undated guidance, accessed in 2026, reports 128-bit security for a 12-word BIP39 backup and for its 20-word SLIP39 backup, assuming the words are genuinely random. It reports 256-bit security for a 24-word BIP39 backup. These are figures about the backup standard’s possible combinations as described by Trezor, not a measure of total wallet security or a guarantee against theft, phishing, unsafe handling, or mistakes.

Important July 2026 COLDCARD seed-generation disclosure
Coinkite’s own comparison page reports a July 2026 firmware bug that weakened seed generation, says attackers exploited it offline, and says the device itself was not remotely hacked. The company says fixed firmware corrects future seed generation while existing affected seeds require migration. The available account does not independently establish affected versions, the incident’s scope, or remediation status. Owners concerned that a seed may be affected should consult Coinkite’s current official notice and follow its current migration instructions; do not assume that updating firmware alone resolves an existing affected seed.
