The best starting point depends on how you play: the current native PC port has its own display controls, while an N64 emulator such as Project64 uses graphics plugins. For the native port, enable native widescreen if you want an undistorted image; for Project64, start with GLideN64 in HLE mode for a balance of performance and visuals. There is no documented universal resolution or graphics preset that is best for every PC.
First identify which PC version you are using
“GoldenEye 007 on PC” can mean either the current native port of the original 1997 Nintendo 64 game or the game running in an N64 emulator. The controls and rendering options differ, so do not look for Project64 plugin settings in the native port or assume the port’s F10 controls apply to an emulator.

| Setup | What it is | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Native PC port | A native PC port compiled from reconstructed source code for the original N64 game; it is not the Xbox 360 remaster. The project describes v0.4.0, released September 28, 2026, as a playable pre-1.0 release for Windows and Linux, including Steam Deck. It requires you to supply a supported NTSC-U ROM. Project repository | Open the port’s F10 overlay and begin with native widescreen enabled. |
| N64 emulator | The N64 game running through an emulator and its graphics plugin; Project64 is one such option. | In Project64, begin with GLideN64 in HLE mode for the general performance-and-gaming recommendation. Project64 support documentation |
If you are unsure, check the application name and graphics-plugin settings before changing anything. The steps below keep the two paths separate.

Best display settings in the native PC port
Use native widescreen to avoid stretching
Enable the port’s native widescreen option for a wide display. It renders the game world without stretching it and anchors the HUD to the screen edges. The front-end menus remain pillarboxed at 4:3, so their shape differs from the in-game presentation. If you prefer the original stretched frame, use the port’s Native widescreen toggle to restore it. These behaviors are documented by the project and its README.
#1 Best Overall
- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
One visual inconsistency is cosmetic: with native widescreen enabled, the F10 options overlay stretches with the window rather than appearing pillarboxed like the front-end menus. The project says the game world and HUD widescreen rendering are correct. Port README
Set resolution and optional graphics features incrementally
The F10 overlay exposes resolution, frame cap, MSAA, filtering, and FOV controls. The project documentation lists these controls but does not prescribe a universally best combination or numeric values for particular hardware. Treat the following as general setup advice, not as a tested GoldenEye preset:
Rank #2
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Open the game’s F10 overlay and select a resolution that suits your display.
- Check that gameplay remains smooth at that resolution before raising optional image-quality settings.
- If you want smoother edges, try MSAA; if you want a different texture appearance, test filtering. Change one option at a time so you can tell whether it helps your image or performance.
- Adjust the frame cap and FOV to your preference, then verify the result in gameplay rather than judging it only from the menus.
The repository documents the available controls but does not establish a single best resolution, MSAA level, filtering mode, frame cap, or FOV for all systems. Project repository

Best graphics plugin in Project64
Project64’s support documentation gives general recommendations for its plugin setups, not a GoldenEye-specific guarantee. Choose based on whether you prioritize a performance-oriented starting point or accuracy:
Rank #3
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
| Priority | Project64 setup | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Performance and general gaming | GLideN64 in HLE mode | A sensible starting point when you want a balance of speed and visuals. Project64 presents it as a general recommendation, not a promise that it is optimal on every PC or for GoldenEye in particular. |
| Accuracy | Parallel-RDP in LLE mode | The accuracy-oriented option in Project64’s guidance. Prefer it when accuracy matters and your system handles it well; the documentation does not guarantee performance on an individual PC. |
Both recommendations come from Project64’s support documentation. The source does not establish which plugin mode will look or perform best on every machine.
Choose resolution without sacrificing smooth play
Higher internal resolution can make an emulated image clearer, but it uses more GPU resources. The practical choice is the highest setting that stays smooth on your device, not a fixed upscale factor for every PC. Start at the emulator’s normal or native-like rendering option, raise internal resolution one step at a time, and back down if you notice slowdown or stutter.

Dolphin’s official guide warns that even 2× internal resolution can cause noticeable slowdown on onboard graphics and mobile devices, and recommends balancing fidelity against performance. That is general emulator guidance, not a GoldenEye benchmark or a recommendation for Dolphin as the N64 setup here; Dolphin is a GameCube and Wii emulator. Dolphin Emulator Configuration Guide

- You are using the native port and want a correctly proportioned wide image: enable native widescreen; expect 4:3 pillarboxed front-end menus.
- You are using Project64 and want a balanced starting point: choose GLideN64/HLE, then tune resolution on your own hardware.
- You are using Project64 and prioritize accuracy: try Parallel-RDP/LLE if your PC can run it smoothly.
- You see slowdown after increasing resolution or enabling image enhancements: reduce the last setting you changed and retest before adjusting anything else.
These are separate paths rather than interchangeable presets. Use the controls belonging to your actual port or emulator, and favor stable gameplay over an upscale or enhancement that introduces stutter.
