For a comfortable attempt at running Qwen3.8-27B locally, target at least 24 GB of GPU memory with a suitable quantized checkpoint. The exact requirement depends on the checkpoint, context length, inference software and serving configuration: vLLM lists minimums ranging from 24 GB for its INT4 build to 67 GB for BF16. System RAM is a separate resource, and the available sources do not establish one universal minimum for it.
How much GPU memory does Qwen3.8-27B need?
There is no single memory figure for every Qwen3.8-27B setup. Model weights occupy different amounts of space depending on precision and quantization, while the inference runtime and context-related KV cache need additional memory. vLLM’s figures below are configuration-specific deployment guidance, not a guarantee that every workload or context will fit.

| vLLM checkpoint or build | Weight footprint listed by vLLM | Listed minimum VRAM | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| INT4 W4A16 | 19.5 GB | 24 GB | A lower-footprint quantized option; hardware support depends on the build. |
| NVFP4 build | 21.9 GB | 32 GB | A distinct NVFP4 checkpoint and deployment path. |
| NVFP4 build | 26.4 GB | 32 GB | A second NVFP4 build; quantized options are not all equivalent. |
| Official block-scaled FP8 | 30,866,866,928 bytes (30.9 GB; 28.7 GiB) | 38 GB | Checkpoint footprint and deployment minimum are different quantities. |
| BF16 | 55,563,006,776 bytes (55.6 GB; 51.7 GiB) | 67 GB | Fuller-precision weights require substantially more capacity. |
These checkpoint sizes and minimum VRAM figures are from the vLLM Project’s actively maintained Qwen3.8-27B deployment recipe, current at access in 2026. Check the recipe for the exact model ID and hardware support before choosing a build.

What GPU options are documented?
AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700
AMD identifies the Radeon AI PRO R9700, with 32 GB of graphics memory, as a supported single-card option for Qwen3.8-27B. AMD’s guidance says the model needs roughly 24 GB of variable graphics memory (VGM) or VRAM to run comfortably. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee for every quantization, context or runtime.

AMD also reports preliminary Windows/Vulkan llama.cpp throughput of up to 51.8 tokens per second on the Radeon AI PRO R9700. The figure is from AMD’s August 2026 measurements, averaged across three or more runs, using MTP=2; AMD says results may vary. It is a manufacturer-reported result, not an independent comparison with other GPUs.
NVIDIA RTX 5090
The vLLM recipe documents an NVFP4 deployment on a single RTX 5090 using a 32K maximum context and FP8 KV cache. That setup requires the --enforce-eager option: the recipe says CUDA graph capture runs out of memory without it. The recipe also describes a two-RTX-5090 configuration for a larger context, so do not assume the single-card example covers every context or serving load.

Ryzen AI Max+ systems
AMD also identifies Ryzen AI Max+ processor-based systems as an option. In AMD’s preliminary August 2026 Windows/Vulkan llama.cpp results, a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 system reached up to 24.5 tokens per second, averaged over three or more runs using MTP=4; AMD notes that results may vary. This is a different platform configuration from a discrete GPU, and the throughput figure should not be treated as a direct GPU-to-GPU benchmark.
Why context length and runtime change the fit
GPU memory must hold more than the model weights. The inference runtime uses memory, and the KV cache grows as the conversation context grows. As a result, a checkpoint whose weights are smaller than a card’s VRAM can still exceed available memory at a chosen context or with a particular serving setup.

An Alibaba Cloud Community article dated August 5, 2026 discusses memory behavior using Qwen3.6-27B measurements and arithmetic. It lists 55.6 GB for BF16, 28.6 GB for Q8_0 and 16.8 GB for Q4_K_M weights for that neighboring model, and explains that cache, runtime and operating-system use add to weight memory. These are Qwen3.6 figures, not measured Qwen3.8-27B checkpoint sizes; treat them as context for how memory adds up, not as Qwen3.8 specifications.
How much system RAM do you need?
System RAM and GPU memory are not interchangeable in a standard discrete-GPU setup. VRAM or VGM is the relevant capacity for holding weights and GPU-side inference data; system RAM serves the host operating system and applications. Offloading model data or using a unified-memory system can make system memory part of the usable model capacity, but the amount depends on the runtime and configuration.

The available sources do not specify a universal system-RAM minimum for Qwen3.8-27B. AMD’s Radeon test system had 64 GB of system memory, while its Ryzen AI Max+ test system had 128 GB. Those are test-system specifications, not minimum recommendations. Choose system memory based on the host, runtime and whether your particular setup offloads data; do not mistake either test configuration for a required floor.

- Choose the checkpoint first. Use the vLLM recipe’s variant-specific VRAM guidance: 24 GB for its INT4 build, 32 GB for its NVFP4 builds, 38 GB for FP8 or 67 GB for BF16.
- Allow for the context and runtime. Decide what context length and serving workload you need, then check the matching software configuration. Weight size alone does not establish that the full workload fits.
- Match the GPU to a documented path. AMD names the 32 GB Radeon AI PRO R9700 for Qwen3.8-27B; vLLM documents an RTX 5090 NVFP4 path with specific single-card settings. Confirm current support in the relevant project documentation.
- Plan system RAM separately. Account for your operating system, applications and any offloading or unified-memory behavior. The cited sources do not support a universal number.
- Compare complete system cost and form factor. Current prices for these GPUs are not established here, and a used-build estimate is not a GPU price quote. The Alibaba Cloud Community article’s $1,300–1,800 estimate refers to a complete used build at mid-2026 prices, not the current price of either recommended GPU.
