Best Google TV Streamer Alternatives: Which Streaming Device Fits Your Setup?

The right Google TV Streamer alternative depends on your budget, ecosystem, TV setup and control preferences. Here’s how the leading options fit different households.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best Google TV Streamer alternative depends on what you value: choose the onn. Google TV 4K Plus for an affordable Google TV box, Apple TV 4K for an Apple-centered home, Fire TV Cube for Alexa and voice control, or Roku Streaming Stick 4K for a compact secondary TV. NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is a more specialized option for people focused on Plex and local media. These recommendations draw on editorial guides, not a single controlled comparison, and current prices and model availability can change.

How to choose an alternative

Start with the interface and ecosystem your household already uses. Google TV, tvOS, Fire TV and Roku have distinct home screens and integrations; a device that fits your phone, smart-home controls and viewing habits may be more convenient than one with a longer feature list. For a side-by-side editorial comparison, see PCWorld’s streaming-device guide and Tom’s Guide’s Google TV Streamer versus Apple TV 4K comparison.

  • Choose by ecosystem: Google TV for its interface and Google integrations, Apple TV for Apple services and features such as AirPlay, Fire TV for Alexa-oriented control, or Roku for a simple stick-style setup.
  • Check the physical setup: Confirm the available HDMI connection, whether you need wired Ethernet or USB, and whether the device’s shape and power arrangement work behind or beside your TV.
  • Match picture and sound formats: Check the exact model’s supported resolution, HDR and audio formats against both your TV and the content you watch. Support on a device alone does not guarantee that a title or display will use that format.
  • Evaluate the remote and voice controls: Consider whether you want hands-free voice control, a voice button on the remote, or conventional navigation.
  • Check apps and services: Verify that the streaming apps your household uses are available on the exact platform and model.

Best alternatives by use case

Budget Google TV: onn. Google TV 4K Plus

PCWorld positions the onn. Google TV 4K Plus as a budget streamer with Google TV, 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and a voice remote. It may suit someone who wants a Google TV interface without moving to a different platform. PCWorld also notes home-screen clutter, remote limitations, and the absence of Ethernet and USB-A. Those missing connections matter if you need wired networking or want to connect USB accessories.

Apple ecosystem: Apple TV 4K

Consider Apple TV 4K if your household already uses Apple services or values integrations such as AirPlay, AirPods and iCloud. PCWorld describes its interface as uncluttered and ad-free, while identifying price as a drawback. The higher cost makes most sense when those integrations and the interface matter to you; it is not automatically the better choice for a household that mainly wants an inexpensive way to stream.

Tom’s Guide’s comparison discusses shared HDR formats between Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer, but its model and specification details are an editorial snapshot. Verify the current Apple TV model’s specifications and price before buying.

  • Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
  • Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Alexa and voice control: Amazon Fire TV Cube

Fire TV Cube is the shortlist option for a household that wants Alexa-oriented voice control. PCWorld highlights voice control and fast app loads, and flags a cluttered home screen and higher cost as trade-offs. Confirm the generation and current listing before purchase: product generations and availability can change. NVIDIA also includes Fire TV Cube in its platform comparison, but that page should not be read as a uniform independent test of every device: NVIDIA’s streaming-platform comparison.

Compact secondary TV: Roku Streaming Stick 4K

The stick format makes Roku Streaming Stick 4K a practical candidate for a secondary TV where a compact device is preferable to a box. A May 2026 buying guide recommends it for secondary-TV and budget use; treat that as the guide’s use-case recommendation, not proof that it outperforms the alternatives in a measured comparison. Check the current model’s ports, supported formats and app availability before choosing it.

Rank #3
Google TV Streamer 4K - Fast Streaming Entertainment on Your Device with Voice Search Remote - Watch Movies, Shows, Live, and Netflix in HDR - Smart Home Control - 32 GB of Storage - Hazel
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Plex and local media: NVIDIA Shield TV Pro

NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is worth considering if your priority is a specialized local-media setup, including Plex. A May 2026 buying guide also mentions upscaling, but those claims are not corroborated here by current official product documentation. Confirm that the model is currently available and that its verified features meet your needs before buying; it is not the default pick for someone seeking only mainstream streaming apps.

At-a-glance shortlist

Device Best fit What the cited coverage says Trade-off or check
onn. Google TV 4K Plus Budget Google TV PCWorld reports 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Google TV and a voice remote. PCWorld notes no Ethernet or USB-A, home-screen clutter and remote limitations. Price is time-sensitive.
Apple TV 4K Apple-centered households PCWorld cites Apple integrations and an uncluttered, ad-free interface. PCWorld flags price; check the current model, specifications and listing.
Amazon Fire TV Cube Alexa and voice control PCWorld highlights voice control and fast app loads. PCWorld flags a cluttered home screen and higher cost; verify the generation and availability.
Roku Streaming Stick 4K Compact or secondary-TV setup A May 2026 guide recommends it for secondary TVs and budget use. This is a use-case recommendation, not a verified head-to-head result; confirm exact specifications.
NVIDIA Shield TV Pro Plex and local-media use A May 2026 guide recommends it for Plex and mentions upscaling. Current official documentation was not established for those specialized claims; verify model status and features.

Check your TV and connections before buying

Google’s guidance for its own Google TV Streamer is useful as a reminder to check the display and cable path: the device needs an HDMI connection, Google recommends a 4K TV for the best experience, and it recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for optimal performance. Google says that cable is sold separately. The resolution you get depends on the device, display and streamed content. These setup notes are for Google TV Streamer and should not be treated as specifications for the alternatives. See Google’s Google TV Streamer setup guidance.

Specifications also vary between models within a platform. For example, Google lists Chromecast with Google TV 4K as supporting up to 4K Ultra HD at 60 fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, with HDMI and USB-C; Ethernet is available through a separately sold Ethernet power adapter. Those details apply to that named Chromecast model, not to every Google TV device or other alternative. See Google’s Chromecast and Google TV Streamer specifications.

Which one should you buy?

For an affordable Google TV box, shortlist the onn. Google TV 4K Plus and make sure its lack of Ethernet and USB-A is acceptable. Choose Apple TV 4K when Apple integration and its interface justify the extra cost. Pick Fire TV Cube for an Alexa-focused setup, Roku Streaming Stick 4K when a compact secondary-TV device is the priority, and Shield TV Pro only when its specialized local-media use case is relevant. Before ordering, confirm the current model, live price, TV compatibility, ports and app support.
