Beats Solo 4 Alternatives: Best Over-Ear Headphones for Comfort, ANC, and Sound

If Beats Solo 4’s on-ear fit is the problem, start with the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for comfort, the Sony WH-1000XM6 for noise cancellation and all-around features, or the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless for battery life and sound customization. If you want to stay with Beats, the over-ear Beats Studio Pro adds active noise cancellation (ANC). None is a universal comfort winner: ear shape, clamping force, and listening-session length matter.

Solo 4 is an on-ear headphone, not an over-ear model. Beats lists it at 217 g and claims up to 50 hours of playback; it also supports USB-C charging and passive 3.5 mm listening without battery power. Those are useful reference points, but they do not mean every over-ear alternative will feel better. Beats’ Solo 4 product page describes its 40 mm transducers and Personalized Spatial Audio as product features, not an independent sound-quality verdict.

Which over-ear alternative is more comfortable?

Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): comfort-first choice

RTINGS describes generous ear and headband padding and says the cups accommodate more head shapes; SoundGuys also names this generation its comfort pick. That makes Bose a sensible first comparison if Solo 4 presses on your ears, but it cannot guarantee a pain-free fit. Head and ear shape, glasses, clamp pressure, and how long you listen can change the result. Try the headphones on for a session close to your normal listening time when possible. RTINGS’ over-ear guide and SoundGuys’ ANC guide support the comfort-oriented recommendation.

Sony WH-1000XM6: strong ANC, but check pad depth

Sony is a strong choice if blocking transport or office noise matters alongside comfort. Independent comparisons report effective ANC, customizable warm sound, multipoint connectivity, and high-resolution codec support. The important fit caveat is shallow earpads: they can feel uncomfortable or compromise the seal for some listeners. Sony’s battery results also differ by test: RTINGS reported more than 31 hours with ANC on, while SoundGuys reported more than 37 hours under its own testing. These are separate test results, not a single guaranteed runtime. See RTINGS’ WH-1000XM6 review and SoundGuys’ guide.

Beats Studio Pro: over-ear Beats, with a comfort caveat

Studio Pro is the natural Beats-family step-up if you want over-ear cups, ANC, wired inputs, and Apple-oriented features. But a Macworld comparison notes that its headband can feel stiff and was less comfortable than AirPods Max for that reviewer. It is a different design from Solo 4, not a guaranteed fix for a fit problem. Read Macworld’s comparison.

Which alternative balances sound and battery life?

Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless: long rated battery life and adjustable sound

Sennheiser lists the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless for up to 60 hours of battery life with ANC on, deep soft earpads, hybrid ANC, and sound personalization. It supports aptX Adaptive, AAC, and SBC. The company describes its tuning as “Warm, Bass-Driven”; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, not a guarantee that every listener will prefer it. Treat 60 hours as a maximum rating rather than a promise of typical runtime. Details are on Sennheiser’s product page.

Sony WH-1000XM6: a customizable all-rounder

Consider Sony if you want ANC plus sound customization and device-switching features, rather than choosing on battery alone. Its pad depth is the fit issue to check, and its two independently reported ANC-on runtimes are not directly interchangeable because the test methods differ. RTINGS’ review covers its measured performance.

How to choose over-ear headphones that suit you

  • Fit: Check cup depth, ear clearance, headband padding, and clamping force. A soft cushion can still press on the ear if the cup is shallow.
  • Session length: Judge comfort over the time you normally wear headphones, not only during a quick try-on. Fit varies between people.
  • Noise cancellation: Prioritize ANC if you regularly listen around transit or office noise. Sony is a strong candidate in the cited comparisons; Bose is another comfort-oriented option.
  • Sound: Look for EQ or personalization if you want to adjust the tuning. The MOMENTUM 4 offers sound personalization; Sony’s sound is described as customizable in the cited comparisons.
  • Battery: Distinguish manufacturer-rated maximums from independent test results. The MOMENTUM 4’s up-to-60-hour figure is Sennheiser’s rating; Sony’s results vary across reviewers.
  • Wired use: If listening without battery power matters, verify the exact model’s wired behavior and inputs. Beats says of Solo 4, “Zero battery power required when listening via 3.5 mm audio cable.” Do not assume that feature carries over to another model.
  • Devices and codecs: Check multipoint and codec support against the phones and computers you actually use; a listed codec is useful only if your source device supports it.
  • Price and availability: Compare current local pricing and return policies. The cited material does not establish current prices or stock.

When a lower-cost ANC option makes sense

RTINGS includes the JBL Live 780NC and Anker Soundcore Space Q45 among its 2026 ANC options. The JBL is described as less comfortable than Sony for long sessions; the cited comparisons do not establish how the Space Q45’s comfort compares with the main recommendations. Check both models’ current local availability and try them on if fit is your priority. RTINGS’ noise-cancelling headphone guide provides the comparison context.
