There is no single best Google Maps replacement for everyone. Apple Maps is a straightforward option for many iPhone users; Organic Maps and OsmAnd are worth considering for offline OpenStreetMap navigation; HERE WeGo is another option for offline driving and travel. Waze focuses on live driver reports, but it is owned by Google. For transit, cycling, or hiking, specialist apps such as Citymapper, Komoot, and AllTrails may fit better. The right choice depends on your phone, destination, travel mode, need for offline access, and how much you rely on local business listings.
How to choose a Google Maps alternative
Start with the job you need the app to do. Navigation and place discovery overlap, but an app that works well for turn-by-turn driving may not offer equally useful transit planning, hiking routes, or local business information.

- Device and car display: Check that the app supports your phone and the display or in-car system you use.
- Travel mode: Compare driving, walking, cycling, public transit, and outdoor routing separately. A specialist app may excel at one mode without replacing a general-purpose map.
- Offline use: Find out whether you can download the needed area and whether navigation and search work without a connection. Download maps before departure and confirm the download is complete.
- Live conditions: Offline maps do not automatically provide live traffic or crowd-sourced incident reports.
- Places and businesses: Check listings, opening hours, reviews, and entrance locations in the actual places you visit. The available evidence does not establish that any alternative universally matches Google’s place database.
- Privacy and availability: Read the app’s current privacy information and check that the features you need are available in your country or city.
Best alternatives by need
Apple Maps for many iPhone users
Apple Maps is the most direct ecosystem alternative for many iPhone owners. Its suitability still depends on your region, preferred travel modes, and the quality of local place information you need. Apple describes data collection and use in its Maps privacy disclosure; it is not accurate to characterize the app as collecting no data.

Organic Maps for offline-first navigation
Privacy Guides describes Organic Maps as an open-source, community-developed app based on OpenStreetMap data, with offline use for walking, driving, and cycling. It is a candidate if you want downloaded maps and do not need every connected feature. Privacy Guides lists no real-time traffic, satellite imagery, or street-view imagery as limitations. Its assessment is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a product’s privacy practices will always match its stated policy. See Privacy Guides’ Maps and Navigation overview.

OsmAnd for configurable offline mapping
Privacy Guides also describes OsmAnd as an offline OpenStreetMap-based navigation option for walking, cycling, driving, and public transit. Its feature depth may suit people who want more control, but check the current app’s capabilities and availability against your specific route and travel mode before depending on it.
HERE WeGo for offline driving and travel
Editorial comparisons identify HERE WeGo as an option for offline maps and driving. Before a trip, verify that the relevant regional maps can be downloaded and that the route features you need are supported in your destination. Offline coverage and functions should not be assumed to be identical everywhere.
Waze for driver-reported traffic and incidents
Waze is oriented toward live traffic and road reports from drivers. It is not an independent alternative for someone trying to leave Google’s services: Google owns Waze.

Citymapper, Komoot, and AllTrails for specialist journeys
Citymapper, Komoot, and AllTrails are examples of apps aimed at more specific activities, including transit, cycling, and hiking. Coverage and usefulness depend on the city, region, and activity, so check the actual area you plan to use rather than treating any one as a universal maps replacement. Apple discusses these and other third-party mapping apps in its 2022 report on third-party apps on the App Store.
Local apps when the destination calls for them
For some destinations, a locally popular mapping service may be more practical than a globally familiar one. Apple’s 2022 report names NAVER Map, KakaoMap, and TMAP in Korea, and Amap among services used in China. That report is historical context, not confirmation of current availability or quality; check the services currently supported where you are going.
What Apple says about Maps privacy
Apple’s privacy disclosure says that information sent to Apple when Maps is used can include the time of a request, device and software details, language, authorized location, map boundaries, search terms, viewed places, and interactions. For directions, Apple says route details can include the origin or current location when authorized, the destination, transport mode, and a random identifier for the navigation session.

Apple says usage metrics use identifiers that rotate multiple times an hour and are not tied to an Apple Account. It also says some personalization happens on-device, while preferred and predicted route geometry may be sent to Apple for particular features. Contextual Maps ads may use current search terms, the map view, and approximate location if permission is granted; Apple says location is not shared with advertisers. These details describe Apple’s stated practices, not a claim that no information is processed.
Apple also says Maps uses mapping services from Amap Software Co., Ltd. in China, so the service and its privacy context can differ by market. Consult Apple’s current Maps privacy disclosure for its full explanation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check your destination before switching
Before relying on a new app, test it against the places and routes you actually use: search for a familiar business, check whether its hours and entrance are right, compare a typical route in your main travel mode, and confirm offline coverage if you need it. This is especially important for trips across regions, where map downloads, local listings, and app availability can vary. The comparisons available here are not a controlled accuracy test, and they do not establish that one app has the best listings or routing everywhere.
Are Google Maps alternatives gaining ground?
Historical figures should not be mistaken for current market share. Apple’s 2022 report, using data.ai data for July 2020 through June 2021, estimated more than 100 million daily active iPhone users across Google Maps (88 million) and Waze (13 million), compared with 34 million for Apple Maps. In countries examined in that report, Apple Maps’ share among the top mapping apps ranged from 16% in Japan to 36% in the United States. These are dated iPhone estimates for the report’s scope, not current global user counts.
Quick Recap
Practical decision guide

- You need offline walking, driving, or cycling: Compare Organic Maps and OsmAnd, and download a test area before your trip.
- You mainly drive and want downloaded maps: Evaluate HERE WeGo’s current regional coverage and route options.
