Amazon Alexa and Apple Home are the strongest mainstream alternatives to Google Home. Samsung SmartThings can also work well when its current hub and device compatibility match your setup. For more control and customization, Home Assistant is another option, but its hardware and setup requirements should be checked before choosing it.
The right platform depends less on brand rankings than on your existing devices, preferred phone and voice assistant, required radios, and the automations you want. Matter can make devices work across ecosystems, but it does not guarantee every platform supports every feature.

At a glance: which Google Home alternative fits?
| Platform | Best suited to | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Alexa | People who want voice control and support for a range of Matter device types. | Exact Echo or eero model, device category, Thread requirement, and support for the feature you need. Amazon distinguishes Matter support from Thread border-router support. Amazon’s Matter information and model details should be checked before buying. |
| Apple Home | People already using Apple devices who want to coordinate accessories through Home and Siri. | Current home-hub requirements for your specific remote-access and automation needs. Apple’s documentation covers Matter accessories and Home automations. Apple Home and Matter |
| Samsung SmartThings | People with compatible devices, including some mixed-brand setups. | Current Samsung hub model, radios, and device-specific features. A manufacturer’s Matter guide identifies SmartThings Station and some Samsung products as controller options, but that is not a complete current compatibility matrix. TP-Link’s Matter guide |
| Home Assistant | People seeking a configurable controller and willing to evaluate setup and ongoing maintenance. | Current supported hardware, integrations, maintenance needs, and any voice-control bridge. A 2026 comparison includes it as an option, but current official setup details are not established here. TechRadar’s smart-home hub comparison |
Amazon Alexa: a practical choice for voice control
Alexa can control Matter devices locally when paired with compatible Echo devices. Amazon also lists eero hardware for Matter, and separately identifies which models can act as Thread border routers. Those capabilities are not interchangeable: a device may support Matter without providing the Thread border-router function your accessories need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore choosing an Echo, check the precise model against Amazon’s support list, then confirm that the Matter device category and the particular control you want are supported. An Echo smart speaker or display with Matter support is a direct route to Alexa control, but the model-specific check matters more than the product-family name.

Apple Home: a natural fit for Apple households
Apple Home supports Matter accessories in the Home app and can bring accessories into its HomeKit coordination and automation framework. Apple describes grouping actions into automations that can be triggered through Siri, which is useful if your household already relies on Apple devices and voice control.
Check Apple’s current home-hub requirements for the workflow you need, especially if you depend on remote access or automations. Do not assume every Apple device can act as the hub for every setup; confirm the model and current requirements before migrating or buying hardware.
Samsung SmartThings: check the hub and each device
SmartThings is worth considering for a mixed-brand home when the specific controller and installed devices are compatible. A Matter guide from TP-Link names SmartThings Station and certain Samsung products among controller options. That does not establish support for every Samsung hub, radio, accessory, or feature.
Use Samsung’s current compatibility information to confirm the exact hub model and required radios, then check each installed device for the functions you expect to use. A platform may recognize a device while still lacking a particular capability you rely on.

Home Assistant: consider the configuration trade-off
Home Assistant appears in a 2026 secondary comparison of smart-home hubs as a configurable alternative. The available information here does not establish a current official hardware recipe or setup path, so treat it as a candidate to investigate rather than a plug-and-play recommendation.
Before committing, verify current supported hardware and integrations, estimate the maintenance you are comfortable taking on, and determine how you will handle voice control if you want it. Its flexibility may suit a technically confident household, but the right controller depends on the devices and workflows you need.

What Matter changes—and what it does not
Matter can make device selection more flexible by enabling supported accessories to connect with compatible platforms, including Alexa and Apple Home. It does not promise identical behavior across controllers. Product category, controller support, and the specific feature you want all affect whether a device will do what you expect.

A Matter label alone is not proof that every control, automation, or radio requirement will be available in your chosen system. TP-Link’s guide and Amazon’s model guidance illustrate why product and controller details need to be checked together.

How to choose without disrupting your current setup
- List the devices you already own. Record their exact model numbers and the features you use, not just their brands.
- Choose the phone and voice ecosystem you want to use. Alexa and Apple Home are the clearest mainstream choices in this comparison; SmartThings may fit compatible mixed-brand devices.
- Check required radios and controller hardware. Confirm whether your accessories need Thread, and whether the specific hub or speaker model supplies it.
- Verify the capability, not just basic connection. Make sure the platform supports the device category and the controls or automations you care about.
- Confirm hub requirements for the intended workflow. This is especially important for Apple Home remote access and automation, and for SmartThings device compatibility.
- Test a small part of the setup first. Where practical, migrate one room or a low-impact accessory before moving routines and essential devices.
Which Google Home alternative should you choose?
Choose Alexa if compatible Echo hardware and its Matter support fit your devices and you want voice control. Choose Apple Home if your household is already built around Apple and its hub requirements suit your use. Consider SmartThings when the exact hub and device combination checks out. Investigate Home Assistant if you value configurability enough to verify its setup and maintenance demands yourself.
In every case, check compatibility at the level of model, radio, device category, and desired feature. That is the reliable way to avoid mistaking cross-platform potential for identical support.
