If an Android beta update has made your phone slow, drained its battery, broken an app, or left a Pixel unable to start, first identify the exact Android build and check its official release notes. Beta issues and fixes vary by build. For a Pixel that will not boot after a beta OTA, Google documents a matching OTA-image recovery route; returning to public firmware is a different process and can erase all user data.
Start by identifying the problem and your Android build
Before changing settings or attempting recovery, record the phone maker and model, Android version and beta build, when the symptom began, and whether it affects the whole phone or just one app. Note whether you can open Settings or reach recovery. These details help you find relevant release notes and, for Pixel recovery, the image intended for your device and build.
- Slow performance or battery drain: Check the release notes for your installed build and any newer eligible beta OTA.
- One app failing: Check whether the release notes mention it or describe a platform compatibility issue.
- Phone will not start: If it is a Pixel and the failure followed a beta OTA, see the OTA recovery section below.
- Want stable Android again: Read the data-loss warning before choosing a factory-image route.
There is no universal troubleshooting procedure established for every Android manufacturer. For a non-Pixel phone, use that manufacturer’s support instructions rather than Pixel flashing steps.
Check the release notes for the exact beta build
Beta releases can have stability, battery, performance, and app-compatibility problems. Google’s Android 16 release notes say, “This release might have various stability, battery, or performance issues,” and list known and resolved problems by release. For example, Google documented fixes for excessive battery drain and haptic feedback in Android 16 Beta 3.2, and known Google TV launch or blank-screen problems in Beta 3. Those are dated examples, not evidence that the same defects affect current builds.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Look up the notes for the version and build actually installed, then see whether a newer beta OTA is offered for your device and whether its notes address the symptom. A fix in one beta does not establish that the same issue or remedy applies to another release.
If only an app is failing
First check whether the beta notes identify the app or a related platform issue. Google notes that apps can be affected by system changes until they are updated. The Android 16 beta notes also warn that apps relying on CTS-approved builds or Play Integrity may not work normally on the beta builds covered by those notes.

If the issue is confined to a third-party app and is not documented as a platform problem, contact the app’s developer. If a Google app or the Android system itself is affected, check the known issues and existing reports in the Android Beta Issue Tracker before filing a new report. The official guidance does not establish cache clearing, reinstalling, or changing settings as reliable fixes for beta compatibility defects.
If a Pixel will not start after a beta OTA
Google documents applying the matching OTA image as a recovery route for a Pixel that received a beta OTA and then would not start. This is a Pixel-specific recovery method, not a general Android procedure and not the same as returning to public firmware. Follow the device- and release-specific directions on Google’s Pixel OTA images page; do not select an image based only on the Android version name.

The current Android 17 OTA instructions covered by that page recommend unlocking the bootloader if possible before applying the listed image and warn that unlocking requires a full data reset. Read the instructions for the exact device and build before proceeding, and account for that data loss first.
If you want to leave beta and return to public Android
Returning a Pixel from beta to production firmware using a factory image requires a full device reset that removes all user data. Google explicitly warns about this and recommends backing up first. Its Pixel factory images guide describes the process; Android Flash Tool offers a guided route, while a manual route is also available. Do not confuse this factory-image return to public firmware with applying an OTA image to recover a Pixel that will not start.

The guided Android Flash Tool process requires a USB connection and USB debugging. Use a data-capable cable compatible with your Pixel and computer; a new cable is unnecessary if you already have a suitable one. Check Google’s factory-image instructions for the current steps and your device before starting.

For the Android 16 QPR beta enrollment route described by Google, enrollment usually does not require a full reset, but Google recommends backing up first. Once enrolled, a device is offered ongoing beta OTAs, including QPR releases, until it is unenrolled. Eligibility and available releases depend on the device and the program’s current state. See Google’s Android 16 QPR beta enrollment information for program details.

| Apply the matching OTA image | A Pixel will not start after a beta OTA. | For the Android 17 instructions cited, bootloader unlocking requires a full data reset; check the exact instructions first. | Pixel-only recovery route. Google Pixel OTA images. |
| Return to public firmware with a factory image | You choose to leave beta and return a Pixel to production firmware. | A full reset removes all user data; back up first. | Pixel factory-image process, using Android Flash Tool or a manual route. Google Pixel factory images. |

Report a reproducible beta problem
For a device, Android system, or Google app issue, check the build’s known issues and existing tracker reports before submitting a new one. Include the device model, Android version and build, when the problem began, what happens, and whether it affects multiple apps or the whole system. For a problem limited to another app, contact its developer instead.
