Matomo is the closest self-hosted replacement for Google Analytics when you need ecommerce, conversion optimization and detailed visitor reports. Choose Plausible Community Edition for a focused, privacy-first web dashboard; Umami for web analytics combined with product analytics; and GoatCounter for the smallest, simplest privacy-oriented setup. PostHog belongs in a separate product-analytics category rather than as the default choice for ordinary site statistics.
Which self-hosted Google Analytics alternative should you choose?
These products solve different problems, so there is no single winner for every site. The decision becomes much easier when you identify whether you need pageviews or a complete conversion and product-analytics system.

| Tool | Best for | Key strengths | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Matomo | A broad Google Analytics replacement | Ecommerce, custom reports, goals, funnels, campaigns, events, visitor profiles, heatmaps, recordings, A/B testing and integrations | Heavier PHP and database administration |
| Plausible Community Edition | Privacy-focused web analytics for publishers and small businesses | Simple dashboard, no cookies, no personal-data collection according to the vendor, lightweight script and AGPL self-hosting | Community Edition lacks several cloud and premium features |
| Umami | Teams that need web and product analytics together | Campaigns, events, journeys, retention, cohorts, funnels, revenue, dashboards, teams and API access | More scope to govern and maintain than a pageview-only tool |
| GoatCounter | Personal, documentation and small-to-medium business sites | No unique identifiers, approximately 3.5 KB of site data, JavaScript or JavaScript-free collection, accessible interface | Limited customization and experimentation compared with full suites |
| PostHog | Product teams needing experiments, feature flags or deep behavior analysis | Product analytics, funnels, retention, experiments, feature flags and session replay | Self-hosted and cloud capabilities can differ; it is not a simple web-statistics substitute |
What self-hosting changes
With a self-hosted analytics platform, the application and its database run on infrastructure you select instead of the vendor’s standard cloud environment. That can keep raw analytics on a preferred server, in a chosen region or inside an organization’s network. It does not remove operational work. You become responsible for the entire service lifecycle.

- Security: apply operating-system, web-server, runtime and application updates; restrict administrative access; use TLS; and protect database credentials.
- Backups: back up both the database and any uploaded configuration or report assets, then test restoration rather than assuming a backup is usable.
- Capacity: watch storage, memory, CPU and database growth as traffic and retention periods increase.
- Availability: monitor the collector and dashboard, renew certificates and plan what happens when the host is unavailable.
- Data quality: configure bot filtering, campaign conventions, event schemas and retention deliberately. A self-hosted service does not automatically inherit a provider’s network-wide protections.
- Incident response: document who can disable tracking, rotate credentials, restore data and investigate an exposure.
Plausible explicitly says that self-hosters own installation, maintenance, upgrades, server capacity, uptime, backups, security, stability, loading time and bot filtering. The same principle applies to Umami, GoatCounter and Matomo even when their software is comparatively lightweight.
Matomo: the broadest Google Analytics replacement
Matomo positions itself as “Complete Analytics. 100% Yours.” Its feature set is the closest match for organizations leaving Google Analytics because they still need detailed acquisition, visitor and conversion reporting rather than only a lightweight pageview counter.
What Matomo provides
- Ecommerce tracking and revenue reporting
- Custom reports and custom dimensions
- Campaign and event tracking
- Goals, funnels and site-search reports
- Email reports and roll-up reporting across multiple properties
- Visitor profiles and detailed visitor analysis
- Heatmaps, session recordings, form analytics and A/B testing
This breadth makes Matomo suitable for a store, lead-generation site or publisher that needs to connect marketing activity to completed actions. It also gives analysts more room to build organization-specific reports than a deliberately minimal dashboard.
Technical requirements
Matomo’s GitHub documentation describes it as a PHP/MySQL application downloaded and installed on your web server. The repository lists PHP 8.1 or newer and MySQL 8 or newer or MariaDB 10.6 or newer as requirements. Plan for a maintained PHP runtime, a supported database, scheduled backups and enough storage for the retention period you choose.
Where Matomo is a good fit
Choose Matomo when replacing Google Analytics means preserving ecommerce analysis, marketing attribution, detailed goals or conversion optimization. It is also the most natural starting point when several sites need roll-up reporting or when analysts expect custom dimensions and scheduled email reports.
Trade-offs
The same depth that makes Matomo powerful increases administration. You must maintain PHP and MySQL or MariaDB, apply Matomo updates, monitor database performance and decide how long visitor-level data should remain available. A small brochure site may find those duties disproportionate to its needs; a revenue-generating site may consider them worthwhile.
Matomo deployment checklist
- Provision a server with the documented PHP and database versions, TLS and a separate database account.
- Set a retention policy before collecting data, including whether visitor-level reports are necessary.
- Install Matomo through its official installer and complete the database and administrator setup.
- Add the tracking method to each property and define a consistent naming scheme for campaigns, events, goals and ecommerce actions.
- Enable only the visitor-profile, recording, heatmap and experimentation features that have a clear business purpose.
- Schedule database backups, test a restore and monitor disk usage, failed requests and update notices.
Plausible Community Edition: focused, privacy-first web analytics
Plausible describes its product as: “Plausible is an open source web analytics tool. No cookies, no personal data collected, no consent banners required.” That is a vendor statement about its intended operation, not a universal legal determination. Your event payloads, jurisdiction, hosting location and consent model still matter.
What the Community Edition is designed to do
Plausible Community Edition (CE) is the free, AGPL-licensed self-hosted release. Its dashboard is intentionally focused on web traffic, pageviews, referrers, campaigns and other practical site metrics. The script is designed to be lightweight, and the no-cookie approach is attractive to publishers, portfolios, documentation projects and small businesses that want useful statistics without building visitor profiles.

Cloud and CE are not identical
The same codebase also powers the managed cloud product, but the vendor documents meaningful differences. CE does not include several cloud or premium capabilities, including marketing funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, single sign-on and the sites API. Do not select CE on the assumption that every cloud feature will appear after installation.
Operational responsibility
Self-hosting Plausible means handling installation, upgrades, server capacity, uptime, backups, security, stability, loading time and bot filtering yourself. A self-hosted instance will not automatically receive cloud-side fixes or network-wide bot filtering. Budget time for those tasks even if the dashboard itself feels simple.
Plausible deployment checklist
- Choose a host with enough memory, storage and reliable outbound connectivity for the application and its database.
- Install the Community Edition using the current official documentation, then protect the administrator account and enable TLS.
- Set up one site at a time and verify that pageviews, referrers and campaign parameters appear as expected.
- Decide which custom events are genuinely necessary; keep names and properties stable so reports remain comparable.
- Configure backups and a monitoring check for both the collector and dashboard.
- Plan a manual update process and read release notes before upgrading, because the self-hosted instance does not update itself like the managed service.
Umami: web analytics that can grow into product analytics
Umami’s version 3 documentation calls it “the open-source web and product analytics platform.” It operates without cookies, cross-site tracking or automatic collection of personal data according to its documentation, and it can be used as managed cloud software or deployed on your own infrastructure.
Recommended Free Tools
Capabilities
Umami covers ordinary web reporting—pageviews, visitors, referrers, locations, devices and real-time activity—but extends into product analysis:
- UTM campaigns and custom events
- Journeys, segments and cohorts
- Retention analysis and goals
- Funnels, attribution and revenue reports
- Dashboards, teams and API access
- Session replays and heatmaps
That combination suits a developer-led team whose website and application are part of one customer journey. You can begin with pageviews and campaigns, then add event and retention analysis without moving to a different product when the service becomes more sophisticated.
When Umami is the better choice
Use Umami when product questions are already on your roadmap: Which onboarding step causes abandonment? Do returning users retain better after a feature release? Which campaign produces paid usage rather than only visits? Its funnels, cohorts, retention, revenue and API features are aimed at those questions.
What to plan before deployment
Umami’s wider scope requires governance. Define who may create events, how event names and properties are reviewed, which teams can access revenue data and how long session-related information is retained. A compact installation can still become difficult to manage if every developer adds one-off events without a shared schema.

GoatCounter: the smallest privacy-oriented footprint
GoatCounter describes itself as “Easy web analytics. No tracking of personal data.” It is open source, available as a hosted service or self-hosted application, and targets people who want understandable site statistics without the complexity of a large analytics suite.
Collection methods
GoatCounter can collect data through JavaScript, a JavaScript-free tracking pixel, application middleware or logfile import. That flexibility is useful for documentation, static and server-rendered sites, and environments where adding a conventional browser script is undesirable.
The vendor says the site component adds about 3.5 KB of data and that GoatCounter does not track users with unique identifiers. It still reports useful context such as referrers, campaigns, browser information, location and screen size, while emphasizing accessibility and a simpler interface.
Best use cases
GoatCounter is a strong fit for a personal site, documentation project or small-to-medium business that values a low operational and page-load footprint. It is not the first choice for extensive ecommerce, experimentation, visitor recordings or product-analytics workflows.

- Choose the collection method that matches the site: JavaScript, pixel, middleware or logfiles.
- Install the self-hosted application and secure its administrator access and transport layer.
- Define the page and campaign naming conventions you need before importing logs or adding tracking.
- Check that referrers, screens, locations and campaign values are being recorded without exposing data you do not need.
- Set up backups and monitoring, then document updates and recovery procedures.
PostHog is a boundary case, not the default replacement
PostHog matters when the requirement is product analytics rather than conventional website reporting. Funnels, retention, experiments, feature flags and session replay are central to that category. A software team may reasonably evaluate it alongside Umami when activation and feature adoption matter more than publishing metrics.
However, PostHog should not be presented as the automatic answer to “I need a self-hosted Google Analytics replacement.” Cloud and self-hosted capabilities can diverge, so verify the current self-hosting scope, licensing and operational requirements before committing to a production deployment. If your needs are pageviews, referrers and campaign reports, one of the focused tools above will usually be easier to operate.
Feature comparison at a glance
| Decision point | Matomo | Plausible CE | Umami | GoatCounter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary orientation | Full web, visitor and conversion analytics | Focused web analytics | Web plus product analytics | Minimal web analytics |
| Cookies and personal data | Configurable privacy controls; deeper visitor workflows are available | Vendor states no cookies and no personal-data collection | Documentation states no cookies, cross-site tracking or automatic personal-data collection | Vendor says it avoids unique identifiers and personal-data tracking |
| Ecommerce and revenue | Yes | CE does not include ecommerce revenue goals | Revenue reports are documented | Not positioned as an ecommerce suite |
| Funnels and journeys | Funnels | Marketing funnels and user journeys are not included in CE | Funnels and journeys | Not positioned as a funnel or journey platform |
| Heatmaps and recordings | Heatmaps and session recordings | Not included in CE’s documented feature set | Heatmaps and session replays | Not positioned as a recording or heatmap platform |
| Collection choices | Web application tracking | Web tracking | Web and product event tracking | JavaScript, pixel, middleware or logfile import |
| Self-hosting burden | Highest of these four; PHP plus MySQL or MariaDB | Moderate; all maintenance is yours in CE | Moderate; broader analytics governance is needed | Lower application scope, but hosting and updates remain your responsibility |
How to select the right platform
Choose Matomo for feature parity and conversion depth
Start with Matomo if losing Google Analytics would also mean losing ecommerce reports, detailed goals, custom dimensions, visitor profiles, experimentation or scheduled reports. Accept the database and PHP maintenance as the price of that breadth.

Choose Plausible CE for a clean publisher dashboard
Choose Plausible CE when your essential questions are: How many people visited? Which pages and referrers worked? Which campaign brought traffic? It is particularly appealing when no-cookie operation and a small, readable interface matter more than funnels, revenue goals or user journeys.
Choose Umami for a website-to-product journey
Choose Umami when marketing traffic and in-product behavior need to be analyzed in one system. Its event, funnel, cohort, retention and revenue capabilities make it more future-proof for a product team than a pageview-only service.
Choose GoatCounter for minimum overhead
Choose GoatCounter when simplicity, accessibility and a small collection footprint outweigh advanced customization. Its pixel, middleware and logfile options are especially useful when browser JavaScript is limited or undesirable.
Evaluate PostHog only for product-team requirements
Bring PostHog into the shortlist when feature flags, experimentation or retention-driven product decisions are primary. Validate self-hosting boundaries before treating it as infrastructure for a general public website.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Planning a reliable self-hosted installation
Separate analytics from critical application infrastructure
Run analytics on a host or service boundary that can be maintained independently of the main website. A failed analytics dashboard should not take down checkout, publishing or authentication. Restrict database access to the analytics application and administrators, and avoid sharing credentials with unrelated applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet retention and access rules first
Decide which reports require visitor-level detail and which can be aggregated. Give marketing, developers and leadership only the access each role needs. For product events, document allowed properties and prohibit accidental collection of names, email addresses, free-text form contents or other direct identifiers unless there is a reviewed, lawful reason.
Make backups recoverable
Back up the analytics database on a schedule that matches the value of the reports. Keep at least one copy separate from the production host, encrypt sensitive backups and perform a restoration exercise. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Best Value
Monitor the collector, not just the dashboard
A dashboard can load successfully while new events are failing. Monitor ingestion responses, queue or database errors, disk growth, certificate expiry and delayed reports. Add a synthetic pageview or event that confirms the complete path from browser or server to stored report.
Control bot and campaign noise
Define a campaign naming convention before teams publish links. Review bot filtering after installation and again when traffic patterns change. Plausible’s warning about self-hosted bot filtering is relevant to every platform: a local instance does not automatically receive the provider’s broader detection network.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Privacy and compliance considerations
“Self-hosted” means you control the infrastructure, not that every deployment is automatically private or compliant. A privacy review should cover the events you send, IP-address handling, cookies or local storage, identifiers, retention, access logs, subprocessors, hosting country and the consent rules that apply to your audience.
Plausible and Umami explicitly describe no-cookie operation, and GoatCounter says it avoids unique identifiers. Matomo provides privacy controls while also supporting deeper visitor and personalization workflows. Those differences affect configuration and risk. Do not advertise any platform as universally “GDPR compliant” or legally exempt from consent without checking your jurisdiction, implementation and data flows.
- List every field transmitted by the tracker, including custom event properties.
- Remove direct identifiers and unnecessary free text.
- Set the shortest retention period that still answers your reporting questions.
- Document who can export reports and where exports are stored.
- Provide a way to honor deletion or access requests when your legal obligations require it.
- Review hosting location, backups and administrator access as part of the same privacy assessment.
A practical migration sequence from Google Analytics
- Inventory existing reports. Separate essential page, campaign, event, goal, ecommerce, funnel and retention reports from dashboards nobody uses.
- Map each requirement. Match pageviews and campaigns to any candidate; map ecommerce and experimentation needs to Matomo; map product funnels and retention to Umami or a product-analytics platform.
- Define a measurement plan. Standardize event names, campaign parameters, revenue units and conversion definitions before installing code.
- Deploy in parallel. Run the new collector beside Google Analytics long enough to find broken events, missing referrers and bot noise. Treat differences as diagnostic signals, not as proof that one tool is universally more accurate.
- Validate critical conversions. Test checkout, signup, search, form submission and application events on supported browsers and devices.
- Train report owners. Explain changed definitions, attribution windows, retention limits and access controls to everyone who consumes analytics.
- Cut over deliberately. Remove obsolete tracking only after exports, dashboards, privacy notices and recovery procedures are ready.
Common failure modes and fixes
The dashboard is empty
Check that the tracking script, pixel, middleware or logfile importer is actually running; confirm the property identifier; inspect browser or server errors; and allow for any documented processing delay. A successful page load alone does not prove that an event was accepted.
Traffic is dramatically higher than expected
Review duplicate tags, single-page-application route handling, internal traffic and bot filtering. A parallel migration often leaves both old and new tags active, which can make a single visit appear twice in one system.

Standardize UTM spelling and capitalization, prevent redirects from stripping parameters and document ownership of campaign links. Decide whether internal links should carry campaign parameters at all.
Updates break the installation
Read release notes, take a tested backup, stage upgrades when possible and confirm runtime and database compatibility. Keep a rollback plan and monitor ingestion immediately after the update.
Storage keeps growing
Shorten retention, aggregate reports where appropriate, remove unused event properties and review recordings or heatmaps. Matomo’s visitor-level features and Umami’s session-related capabilities can consume considerably more storage than basic pageviews.
Bottom line
For the closest all-purpose, self-hosted Google Analytics replacement, start with Matomo. For a lightweight privacy-first dashboard, choose Plausible Community Edition, while remembering that its self-hosted release does not have every cloud feature. Choose Umami when funnels, retention, journeys and revenue belong alongside web traffic. Choose GoatCounter when a small, accessible and privacy-oriented footprint is the priority. Consider PostHog only when product analytics, experiments or feature flags—not ordinary site reporting—drive the decision.
