There is no single Garry’s Mod preset that guarantees better frame rates on every low-end PC. Start by lowering the game’s video-quality settings, then test a modest resolution reduction if performance is still poor. If that does not help, check scene complexity, addons, and other running programs: slowdowns can come from more than graphics settings.
Start with a repeatable test
Before changing settings, choose a map or situation you can revisit and note what is actually going wrong. Low average frame rate, intermittent stutter, long loading, and crashes are different symptoms; a change that helps one may not fix another. Compare the same scene after each adjustment, and change one thing at a time so you can tell what made a difference.

Lower graphics settings, then test resolution
Reduce video quality gradually
Open Garry’s Mod’s video options and lower the available quality settings in small steps. Check the same scene after each change rather than applying an assumed “low-end PC” preset. Facepunch does not publish a universal preset or measured frame-rate gains for these adjustments. Facepunch’s performance guidance specifically recommends trying a lower Texture Detail when mods or a server use substantial video memory, particularly when the game crashes during play or loading. Treat it as a VRAM-related troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed FPS switch.

Try a modest resolution reduction
If lowering quality is not enough, reduce the resolution through the game’s options if they are accessible. Compare performance and readability in the same scene; lower resolution can make the image less sharp, so restore the original value if the tradeoff is not worthwhile. Facepunch documents launch parameters such as -w 1280 -h 720 for resolution and startup/display troubleshooting. That example is not a benchmark-proven FPS preset. The support instructions also cover windowed mode and other display troubleshooting.

Check props, constraints, addons, and background programs
Graphics settings cannot remove every source of load. Garry’s Mod’s official FAQ says a computer may slow down when it cannot handle the workload, and identifies many spawned props or constraints, too many addons, and other programs running as possible causes. The FAQ’s “Everything’s really slow” entry supports testing these factors, but does not say that every slow system is affected by them.
- Remove some props or constraints and compare the same situation.
- Temporarily reduce the addons in use, then test again.
- Close other programs and see whether the slowdown changes.
Test each condition separately. A busy map or addon-heavy setup may remain demanding even after you lower graphics quality.

Isolate addons without deleting them
If you suspect addons, use the reversible launch-option test documented by Facepunch. In Steam, open Garry’s Mod’s launch options and add -noaddons -noworkshop. This disables legacy-folder and Steam Workshop addons for the test; it does not delete them. Remove both options to re-enable addons. If performance changes, the test points toward addon load as a factor, but it is not a permanent performance preset. Facepunch’s command-line documentation describes these switches.

Launch options can set startup behavior, help troubleshoot display or configuration problems, or temporarily isolate addons. The Garry’s Mod Wiki documents the Source Engine form +<ConVar Name> <value> for setting a console variable after the game starts, along with Garry’s Mod-specific switches. That does not make every circulating command bundle a verified FPS optimization. See the launch-parameter reference before relying on a switch, and avoid treating options that only alter startup behavior as in-game performance fixes.

Try auto-configuration as a temporary reset
Facepunch documents -autoconfig as a way to let Steam configure Garry’s Mod with settings for the machine. It is a configuration reset attempt, not a universal performance preset. Try it for troubleshooting, then remove it from launch options as the support instructions advise. Facepunch’s support page explains the option.
Consider the 64-bit client without expecting an FPS guarantee
Facepunch’s September 2026 update says the 64-bit client can be selected from Steam launch options. The update note does not establish that switching to it improves frame rate on every low-end PC, so treat it as an available option to try—not a guaranteed fix. Check Facepunch’s update notes for the current client-selection information.

Choose the next test based on what changed
- Lower quality or resolution helps: the rendering settings were relevant to the tested scene. Keep only the reductions whose visual tradeoff you accept.
- Fewer props or constraints helps: scene complexity was a factor in that situation; graphics changes alone may not address it.
- Disabling addons helps: re-enable them and narrow down which addons are associated with the slowdown.
- Nothing changes: the documented steps do not identify every possible cause. Do not assume a launch-option bundle or a lower preset must solve it; record whether the remaining issue is frame rate, stutter, loading, or crashing before choosing another troubleshooting path.
