Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the lowest, steadiest gaming latency, connect your PC or console to the router by Ethernet if you can. A gaming router is most useful when Wi-Fi adds delay or when household traffic is congesting your internet connection. It cannot fix a long route to a game server, ISP routing problems, server load, or the game’s netcode.
When does a gaming router improve latency?
A router upgrade can help with problems inside your home network, not every cause of high in-game ping. Your displayed ping includes the trip beyond the router to the game server, so a new router cannot control the route your ISP takes, the server’s distance or load, or how the game handles network updates.

RTINGS reports that its wired tests showed virtually no router-level latency and jitter compared with its Wi-Fi tests. That is a test finding, not a guarantee for every home or device. Its testing also found router-level latency issues difficult to create unless the internet bottleneck was saturated. In practical terms, a new router is most likely to help when your Wi-Fi connection is unstable or other household traffic is filling the connection.
Do not use advertised Wi-Fi throughput as a stand-in for gaming latency. High peak rates can help with large downloads and multiple devices, but they do not prove that a router will lower ping.

Best gaming router picks from current tests
RTINGS’ gaming-router guide names the TP-Link Archer BE550 as a mid-range option and the ASUS ROG Strix GS-BE18000 as an upper mid-range option. These are comparison points from its product testing, not a guarantee of lower ping in every home. The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE19000 and NETGEAR Nighthawk XR1000 illustrate different feature sets; their details below are manufacturer specifications or claims, not equivalent independent comparisons.

How to choose for your home
Start with the connection and the room where you play, then weigh the router’s features against your actual bottleneck.
Rank #2
- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
- Latency and jitter under load: Look for testing under competing traffic, not just an unloaded speed result. A router’s congestion controls matter most when another device is using the same constrained connection.
- Coverage at the play location: Walls, floors, and distance can make Wi-Fi less stable. If the signal is weak, repositioning the router or adding a compatible access point may address coverage better than buying a model for its gaming branding.
- Wired ports and internet speed: Check the number and speed of LAN ports for consoles, PCs, and other wired devices, plus WAN compatibility with your internet plan. For example, the Archer BE550 has five 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports, while the GS-BE18000 has eight.
- Congestion controls: QoS and similar tools can prioritize selected devices or applications, but names and behavior differ by model and firmware. Consider whether you are willing to configure and maintain them.
- Wi-Fi compatibility: Match the router’s bands and generation to the devices you own. A newer Wi-Fi generation or higher aggregate speed is not, by itself, evidence of lower gaming ping.
- Total cost: Pay for capabilities you will use, such as multi-gig wired connections or useful congestion controls, rather than a gaming label alone.
Mesh can improve whole-home coverage, but do not assume a mesh node will reduce latency. RTINGS removed its mesh gaming category in an August 2026 update, saying these systems generally introduce more latency than a standalone router. Placement and the link between nodes matter, so use mesh to solve a coverage problem rather than treating it as a guaranteed latency upgrade.
What QoS and bufferbloat controls do
When the internet connection is saturated, packets can wait in queues before reaching the router’s uplink or downlink. That queueing delay is commonly called bufferbloat and can make a game feel laggy even when the connection’s normal ping is acceptable.

QoS can give selected devices or applications priority. NETGEAR’s support materials describe Pro Gaming QoS as allocating a percentage of bandwidth to selected devices; its DumaOS 3.0 documentation describes application-level QoS and Congestion Control as tools intended to prevent congestion and queueing delays. These descriptions explain the vendor’s features, not a universal behavior across router brands.
For a useful result, configure the feature for the devices or applications that need priority and make sure it addresses the actual bottleneck. Prioritization cannot create more internet capacity or improve the ISP’s route to a remote server. If the connection is not congested, these controls may have little effect on latency.

Why the advertised ping-reduction number needs context
NETGEAR advertises up to 93% ping reduction for the XR1000 under its stated setup: DumaOS QoS features enabled, a PS4, a 100Mbps down/20Mbps up connection, and heavy competing traffic that included Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, BitTorrent, and HD video streaming. NETGEAR describes 275ms ping under congestion versus a 49ms non-congested reference. This is a manufacturer claim for that test scenario, not an independently verified result or a promise for other routers, networks, or games. See the XR1000 product page.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Set up for the steadiest connection
- Wire the gaming device when practical. Connect the console or PC to a LAN port on the router with Ethernet. This avoids Wi-Fi as a source of local variation; it does not shorten the route to the game server.
- Check whether the problem happens under load. Compare play when other household devices are idle with play during downloads, streaming, or other heavy use. If lag appears mainly under competition for bandwidth, congestion control or QoS may be relevant.
- Address coverage separately from congestion. If the device must use Wi-Fi, place the router with fewer obstacles between it and the play location. For persistent dead zones, consider an access point or compatible mesh system, while accounting for the possibility that an added wireless hop can add latency.
- Recheck the result in the same conditions. Compare the same game and play location with similar household traffic. A change in a single ping reading may reflect server or route variation rather than the router.
