Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the closest thematic follow-up for companion-led storytelling; Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong fantasy alternative if you are open to turn-based combat. No single recommendation recreates all of Veilguard’s mix of companions, choices, fantasy and action.
Choose by what you want to carry forward
| If you want more of… | Try… | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| BioWare companions and dialogue choices | Mass Effect Legendary Edition | Science fiction rather than fantasy, with the design of an older trilogy. |
| Fantasy companions, role-play freedom and consequential choices | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Turn-based combat instead of Veilguard’s action combat. |
| Tactical fantasy party combat | Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition | Turn-based combat and a different world and tone. |
| Fantasy quests, exploration and romance | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | You play as Geralt, not a customizable hero leading a full companion squad. |
| Open-ended fantasy exploration | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition | Less emphasis on cinematic, companion-led storytelling. |
| More of Thedas and Dragon Age lore | Dragon Age: Inquisition | It is an earlier entry with different pacing and structure. |
These are preference matches, not interchangeable games. Electronic Arts describes The Veilguard as a single-player RPG centered on story, companions, choices and customizable combat, with three classes and two companions accompanying the player on quests. EA announced its release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on October 31, 2024.

For BioWare companions and character-driven storytelling
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
If the relationships, party conversations and role-playing choices mattered most, start with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. It shifts from Thedas to science fiction, but keeps the BioWare focus on a central hero and a cast of companions across a larger story. BioWare says the collection includes the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. That is the publisher’s description of the collection’s contents and presentation, not a statement about current price or retail availability. BioWare’s catalogue provides the collection details.
The main adjustment is its setting and age: expect a science-fiction trilogy and older game design, rather than a new fantasy adventure with Veilguard’s action-combat structure. GamesRadar also recommends it among games for Dragon Age fans, citing the appeal of BioWare’s companion-led RPGs. GamesRadar’s guide was updated February 5, 2025.
#1 Best Overall
- SAVE A BATTERED WORLD - Enter Thedas, a vibrant world of rugged wilderness, treacherous labyrinths and glittering cities. The world is teetering on a knife’s edge while corrupt gods unleash havoc across the continent. Nations war and factions splinter. Who will you trust? From the Arlathan Forest to the back alleys of Minrathous, this is a broken world. Your actions will affect the fate of Thedas forever.
- Unite THE VEILGUARD - Unite a team of seven companions, each with rich lives and deep backstories. These are characters to befriend, and even fall in love with. Among them, an assassin, a necromancer, a detective, each and all bringing their own expertise and unique abilities to the fight. You are never alone, decide who to take into battle and together face down demons, dragons and corrupt gods.
- BECOME THE LEADER OTHERS BELIEVE IN - Select from different races and combat classes, customize your appearance, choose your character’s backstory and begin your journey as Rook, Dragon Age’s newest hero. The choice is yours. Brace yourself, there are tough decisions to be made, allies to inspire, and a fight that needs every sword, staff and bow you can muster.

- Vibrant And Diverse Environments - Enter a vivid fantasy world and experience imaginative new locations as well as some you’ve heard of, but never seen. Larger Than Life Foes - Battle darkspawn, demons from beyond the Veil, dragons that rule the skies, and unique enemies as you advance your quest and fight for Thedas’s future
For fantasy role-play and party relationships
Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong choice if you want fantasy companions, relationships, flexible role-play and choices that shape the story. GamesRadar highlights those elements, and lists the game for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5. The significant difference is combat: it is turn-based, not the action combat of The Veilguard. If you are willing to trade real-time fighting for tactical decisions, it is one of the closest fantasy matches for the party-and-choice side of the experience. GamesRadar’s Dragon Age guide covers its platform listing and appeal.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition
Choose Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition if the prospect of controlling a party through tactical battles appeals more than preserving Veilguard’s combat pace. GameSpot describes it as a Larian Studios party RPG with turn-based combat, companions, quests and decisions that affect the ending. It also appears on PlayStation’s Portuguese Veilguard page as a similar game; that listing is a discovery suggestion, not evidence that the games play alike or share platform availability. GameSpot’s guide is dated January 27, 2026, and PlayStation’s regional page lists its comparable titles.

For fantasy worlds, quests and exploration
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Try The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when what you want next is a richly developed fantasy world, quests, exploration and romance rather than a customizable protagonist with a full squad. Its fixed lead, Geralt, makes it a different kind of role-playing story. GamesRadar points to its storytelling, romance, questlines and exploration as reasons Dragon Age fans might enjoy it. PlayStation also includes it on its regional list of similar games. GamesRadar’s guide and PlayStation Portugal’s page support the recommendation.

Skyrim Special Edition fits players who want to roam a fantasy setting, take on quests and shape an open-ended adventure. It is a looser match if Veilguard’s cinematic conversations and companion relationships were the draw: its appeal is less centered on that style of party storytelling. PlayStation lists it among similar titles on its Portuguese page, while GamesRadar points to its fantasy adventure and dragon encounters. The PlayStation listing is regional, so check the platform and edition relevant to you.

For another journey through Thedas
Dragon Age: Inquisition
If you want more of the setting, lore and series rather than a different kind of RPG, Dragon Age: Inquisition is the direct franchise choice. BioWare describes it as an open-world, story-driven action RPG with complex characters, challenging combat and decisions that shape the experience. It is an earlier entry, so its pacing and structure differ from The Veilguard; it may also be familiar if you have already played it. BioWare’s games catalogue describes the game.
Other options if you want a looser match
Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal may suit you if bonds with a party and character-focused storytelling matter more than fantasy setting or action combat. GamesRadar highlights its party, character relationships, romance and story. Its modern Tokyo setting and turn-based combat make it a more distant match for The Veilguard than the fantasy recommendations.

Cyberpunk 2077
For an action-oriented open-world RPG with freedom in how you approach quests, role-play and relationships, consider Cyberpunk 2077. It trades fantasy and a traditional companion party for a science-fiction city setting. GamesRadar cites its quest approach freedom, role-play and relationships as points of appeal for Dragon Age fans. Its guide also names GreedFall, Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic among recommendations, but the cited material does not establish enough detail here to compare their fit as precisely.
Check the platform before choosing
Availability differs by game and can change by region, edition and retailer. GamesRadar’s guide lists Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PS5; PlayStation Portugal’s similar-games list is a regional discovery page, not a complete cross-platform catalogue. Confirm the exact platform, edition and format in the listing for the store you plan to use rather than assuming every recommended game is available on your system.
