A powerful laptop can still feel slow when a drive is nearly full, background apps are consuming resources, software is outdated, or heat is limiting performance. The right fix depends on what is actually strained: first identify whether the slowdown affects the whole laptop, one app, startup, or a network-dependent task, then check the matching resource before changing settings or buying hardware.
First, work out what kind of slowdown you have
“Slow” can describe several different problems, and each points to a different check. Note when the problem began and whether it followed an update or new app installation. Also note whether it happens on battery, while plugged in, or during a particular workload.

- The whole laptop is sluggish: Check CPU, memory, and disk activity, available storage, background apps, and heat.
- Only one app is slow: Check that app’s resource use and system requirements; other apps may be competing for memory or CPU.
- Startup is slow: Review apps that launch automatically.
- Only online tasks are slow: The bottleneck may be the network or service rather than the laptop itself.
- Fans run loudly or the laptop feels unusually warm: Check activity and airflow, especially if this occurs without an intensive workload.
More than one cause can contribute. A powerful processor does not prevent a crowded drive, heavy background activity, or a heat-related problem from affecting the experience.
Check what is using resources
On Windows 10 or Windows 11
Open Task Manager and inspect CPU, memory, and disk usage. If one app or process is consistently using a large share while the laptop feels slow, close it if it is safe to do so, or investigate whether it is expected to be running. Close unused apps and browser tabs, then restart if performance remains poor.

Windows Security also has a Device performance & health page. It can report on storage capacity, battery strain, apps and software, and the Windows Time service, and may offer recommendations for detected issues. An organization’s policy can prevent access to this page.
On a Mac
Open Activity Monitor to review CPU and memory use. If the Mac is sluggish or unresponsive, look for an app or process that is consuming resources and quit it if appropriate. Check the app’s system requirements if it may need more memory than the Mac has readily available. Use Storage settings to check available space on the startup disk.
Free up storage when the drive is nearly full
Low free space can contribute to slower performance and can make it difficult to install Windows updates. On a Mac, Apple recommends making space on the startup disk by moving files to another disk or external storage, deleting files you no longer need, and reviewing Storage recommendations.

On Windows, review Storage settings and use Storage Sense, temporary-file cleanup, or Disk Cleanup where available. Uninstall apps you no longer need. There is no universal free-space percentage established here as a target for every laptop, so check the device’s available space and whether storage pressure is actually part of the problem.
An external drive can help when the issue is a crowded startup disk and you have files suitable for moving. Before choosing one, confirm your laptop’s ports and consider the capacity and transfer performance your workload needs. External storage will not fix a high-CPU app, excessive startup activity, malware, or overheating.
Reduce background work and update software
Windows
Install available Windows updates and relevant optional driver updates. Review startup apps and disable those you do not need to launch automatically. Restrict background activity where that setting is available. If you suspect malware, run a scan with Windows Security.

Review visual effects and power mode as well. The Best performance power mode can favor responsiveness, but Microsoft warns that it may use more power, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. Choose it only when that trade-off suits the task and power source.

Avoid treating any one cleanup action as a diagnosis: check whether CPU, memory, disk use, or storage capacity is the actual constraint.
macOS
Check whether the startup disk has enough available space and use Storage recommendations if useful. If one app appears to be responsible, compare its requirements with the Mac’s available memory and use Activity Monitor to examine its resource use.

Check heat and ventilation
For a Mac laptop that is warm without intensive work, or whose fans run for a long time, Apple advises checking CPU activity. Do not use the laptop on a bed, pillow, or under bedding; do not cover the keyboard or put anything into ventilation openings. If temperature problems persist, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple cautions against using third-party temperature apps to diagnose possible hardware issues.
These instructions are specific to Apple’s cited guidance; they do not establish one temperature threshold that applies to every laptop. If heat and sustained fan noise persist after checking workload and airflow, seek support for the laptop’s make and model.

When basic fixes do not help
Persistent symptoms can indicate that routine cleanup is not enough. Microsoft lists frequent or loud fan operation, battery deterioration, errors, slow startup or shutdown, slower common tasks, low storage, and consistently high CPU, memory, or disk readings among signs to evaluate. If those symptoms continue after checking apps, storage, updates, and ventilation, arrange diagnosis or support rather than guessing that a RAM or SSD upgrade will solve it.

Before moving to a replacement PC, back up important files. Upgrade options depend on the exact laptop model and whether its components are replaceable, so verify those details before buying parts.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. If the slow laptop runs Windows 10, consult current Microsoft support guidance for your situation rather than assuming it will continue to receive those updates.
