PeaZip for a graphical app across platforms
PeaZip is the clearest fit if you want a graphical archive manager that is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its project documentation also lists BSD support and describes features beyond extraction, including archive conversion, splitting and joining files, encryption, hashing, and exporting command scripts. Portable packages are also documented.
PeaZip’s project lists support for more than 200 archive types and variants. That breadth can help if you regularly receive archives in formats beyond ZIP, although the project’s feature descriptions are not an independent compatibility test. See the PeaZip project documentation for platforms and packages.
The Unarchiver for Mac
The Unarchiver is a focused choice if your main task is unpacking archives on a Mac. Its official page lists ZIP support—including AES-encrypted ZIP and Zip64—as well as RAR, 7z, and other formats. 7-Zip on Linux or macOS from the command line
7-Zip’s official downloads page provides Linux and macOS console builds. Choose these if you are comfortable working in a terminal; they should not be mistaken for the Windows graphical app. For a Linux desktop graphical interface, PeaZip is the more direct option among these choices.
What to check before downloading
- Operating system and architecture: Select a package intended for your OS and CPU architecture. A download page may offer different builds for different systems.
- Interface: Decide whether you want a graphical file manager, context-menu extraction, or command-line operation. The available 7-Zip builds differ by platform.
- Formats: If you receive RAR, 7z, or less common archives as well as ZIP, check that the application lists those formats.
- Encryption: If you need to open password-protected archives, confirm support for the relevant format and encryption method. The Unarchiver, for example, documents AES and Zip64 support for ZIP.
- Extraction versus creation: A tool that can open an archive may also offer options for making one, but settings used to create an archive can affect whether someone else can open it.
ZIP compatibility: why the extension is not the whole story
A file ending in .zip is not automatically compatible with every older archive utility. PeaZip can create ZIP archives using optional compression methods beyond Deflate. If recipients may rely on legacy archive managers, use Deflate for the ZIP compression method; PeaZip’s ZIP guide recommends it when interoperability is critical.
That advice is about creating an archive for broad compatibility. When you are only extracting a ZIP someone sent you, choose a tool that supports the archive’s actual format and encryption rather than assuming all ZIP files are identical.
Rank #3
- Fast and efficient file zipping and unzipping
- Compress files for email transmission
- Archive data using less disk space
- Small download; install and open or compress archives in seconds
- Open and extract many archive formats including rar, cab, tar, 7z, iso and more
Are any of these the fastest or easiest?
The official product pages establish published features and platform availability, but they do not provide a consistent independent speed or usability comparison among these tools. There is not enough evidence here to call one objectively fastest or easiest. Choose based on your operating system, preferred interface, required formats, and whether you also need archive-management features.
