Proton VPN Free is the clearest first choice for Linux users who want unlimited data and can accept automatic server selection. Windscribe Free is a practical alternative if your distribution is supported and its monthly data cap suits your needs. Neither should be described as universally fastest: the available evidence does not provide a controlled, comparable Linux speed test.
Which free Linux VPN should you choose?
| Service | Linux support | Free-plan terms | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN Free | Official GUI for Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora; official CLI for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch. Proton’s Linux download page | Unlimited data and time. Free connections are automatically assigned from ten listed countries. Streaming access is not guaranteed. Proton’s free-versus-paid comparison | Users who prioritize avoiding a data cap over choosing a specific free server. |
| Windscribe Free | Its August 26, 2026 support guide lists Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, Fedora 36 or newer, openSUSE Leap 15.6, Arch with glibc 2.35 or newer, and supported immutable distributions. Windscribe’s Linux setup guide | 2 GB per month by default, or 10 GB per month after confirming an email address; free accounts connect only to free locations. Windscribe’s Linux setup guide | Users whose distribution is supported and whose VPN use fits a monthly allowance. |
| PrivadoVPN Free | Listed as Linux-compatible in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison; compatibility was not verified against official Linux documentation. | Tom’s Guide reports 10 GB of high-speed data per month, followed by unlimited slower data, and streaming support. These are reviewer findings and may change. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison | A lead for streaming-minded readers to investigate, not a confirmed recommendation until current official Linux support and plan terms are checked. |
What matters most when picking a free VPN for Linux?
Distribution support and app type
Start by checking whether the provider supports your exact distribution and whether it offers the interface you want. Proton’s GUI officially supports Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora; its CLI also supports Arch. Windscribe’s current guide lists additional distributions and version requirements, including a glibc requirement for Arch. Provider requirements can change, so check the linked installation documentation before installing.

A graphical app is generally more convenient for connecting and changing settings through a desktop interface. A CLI may suit a terminal-first workflow, but confirm that its features meet your needs: Proton documents DNS and IPv6 leak protection for its GUI and CLI, while its GUI also offers kill-switch options and other advanced features. Data limits and server choice
Proton says its free plan has unlimited data and time, but free connections are assigned automatically. Its listed free-server countries are the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Singapore, Norway, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, and the United States. Proton’s free Linux page

Windscribe’s free tier has a monthly cap and limits users to free VPN locations. The provider says free accounts receive 2 GB monthly by default or 10 GB after email confirmation. That may be enough for occasional browsing, but video, large downloads, and frequent VPN use can consume a capped allowance quickly. Windscribe’s Linux setup guide
Streaming needs
Do not assume that a free VPN will unblock a particular streaming service. Proton says streaming access is guaranteed only on paid plans. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison reports streaming support for PrivadoVPN Free, but that is a reviewer’s finding rather than a lasting guarantee. Check the current service, device, and plan terms if streaming is your main reason for using a VPN.

Privacy claims and trust
Read the provider’s privacy policy and distinguish provider statements from independent verification. Proton describes its Linux app as open source and independently audited, and states that it is based in Switzerland and follows a no-logs policy. Those are provider claims, not a guarantee of anonymity. Windscribe says its free plan is funded by paid subscribers; that, too, is a provider statement rather than an independent verification of its operations. How much confidence should you put in Linux VPN comparisons?
Independent comparisons can help identify candidates, but check what they actually tested. Top10VPN says it tested 23 free VPNs and found that only Proton VPN and Windscribe had dedicated Linux GUI apps among those tested; its page reports that testing was last conducted in August 2026. That result describes the review’s sample, not every VPN available. Top10VPN’s Linux comparison

There is no directly comparable, controlled Linux speed benchmark in the cited material for these free plans. Actual performance can vary with your location, network, protocol, server load, and plan limits, so a universal “fastest” pick is not supported.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is a paid VPN plan worth considering?
Consider paying only if a free plan’s specific restriction gets in your way—for example, you need more server choice, a higher data allowance, or a streaming guarantee. Proton states that streaming guarantees apply only to paid plans. Compare current plan terms directly with your requirements before upgrading; a paid tier is not automatically necessary for ordinary protected browsing.
