These are candidates based on their official product information, not the result of hands-on testing. For a free plan with a documented feature set, start with Toggl Track. For project and task logging, consider Clockify. If automatic tracking is the priority and a subscription is acceptable, evaluate Timing.

What does “automatic time tracking” mean on a Mac?
Toggl Track
Toggl documents one-click timers as well as desktop activity tracking. Its pricing page says activity tracking covers apps and websites used for more than 10 seconds; users can choose which captured activities become time entries. That is different from a timer you start and stop yourself, and it does not establish how accurate the resulting entries will be for your work.
The Mac app page also lists calendar integrations, reminders, idle-time detection, a Pomodoro timer, offline syncing, and reporting through the web app. Availability of some features may depend on plan; check the current Toggl Track pricing page before choosing a plan.

Clockify
Clockify’s desktop app supports a one-click or keyboard-started timer. Its Mac page also describes optional activity capture: the app can record apps and websites so you can later create time entries. Clockify says this captured activity is visible only to the user. That vendor statement is not an independent privacy assessment.
Clockify’s Mac download page distinguishes between the website download and the Mac App Store version. The App Store build omits auto tracker and idle detection; download the app from Clockify’s website if you need those functions. Project management, reports, timesheets, and exports are handled in Clockify’s web version.

Timing
Timing describes automatic tracking and manual entries across its Mac editions. It does not offer a Mac App Store build; the company says App Store sandboxing would limit the details the app can track. That makes it a paid alternative to weigh against the free-first options, not a substitute for a permanent free plan.

Toggl Track’s free plan
Toggl’s pricing page lists manual and real-time timers, focus mode, calendar integrations, simple planning, and personal-level insights on the free plan. The same page lists billable rates, team reports, capacity planning, and additional reporting among paid features. If you need team oversight or more detailed reporting, verify that the free tier covers your specific workflow before setting it up.

Clockify’s free workflow
Clockify’s Mac page describes time tracking around projects, tasks, tags, and billable entries. The page does not provide a comparable detailed list of free-plan limits, so check Clockify’s current plan information before depending on a particular reporting, team, or project feature. Its web app is where the vendor places reports, timesheets, project management, and exports.
Timing’s trial
Timing offers a 30-day trial without requiring a credit card, then lists subscription-based Professional, Expert, and Connect editions with different limits and features. Treat the trial as a way to evaluate the workflow, not as free ongoing tracking.

Check compatibility and installation before you start
- Toggl Track: Requires macOS 11 Big Sur or later and a Toggl account. The vendor provides separate Apple Silicon and Intel downloads.
- Clockify: Requires macOS 12.0 or later. Choose the website download rather than the App Store build if you need auto tracker or idle detection.
- Timing: Its reviewed pricing page does not state a minimum macOS version. Confirm compatibility with the vendor before installing; the company does not distribute a Mac App Store version.
For any app, check your Mac’s macOS version before downloading. A feature described for the desktop app may not be available in a different build or plan.

How to choose for your workflow
- Decide how entries should be created. If you are comfortable starting and stopping a timer, either Toggl Track or Clockify may fit. If you want to review computer activity and turn selected activity into entries, compare the documented desktop tracking workflows.
- Match the minimum macOS version. Choose only an app that supports the version installed on your Mac.
- Check the exact free-plan boundary. Compare the features you actually need—such as calendar integration, personal reports, team reporting, billable rates, or exports—with the current plan page.
- Confirm the installation build. For Clockify’s activity tracker and idle detection, use its website download rather than the App Store version.
- Test the correction workflow before relying on reports. Make a few sample entries and check how you edit or discard them, then confirm that the resulting reports contain the information you need. Vendor feature descriptions do not establish tracking accuracy.
Where does Timery fit?
Timery is an Apple-device companion for Toggl Track, available for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. It requires a free or paid Toggl Track account, so it is not an independent time-tracking service. Consider it if you already use Toggl and prefer Timery’s interface across Apple devices.
