OBS Studio is the best free software to start with if your church can leave a computer and internet connection running during the broadcast. OBS is free and open source, with no watermarks or feature limits, and it sends video from your computer to YouTube Live. For a stream that must keep running with the computer off, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is an alternative, but it is not free beyond its one-day trial.
Which option fits your church?
| Option | Software or service cost | Must a local computer stay on? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Free software; operating a computer, power and internet can still have costs. | Yes. OBS streams directly from the computer. | A church with a suitable computer, reliable connection and someone available to monitor the broadcast. |
| StreamNeo | Paid after the first free day; see current plans at StreamNeo pricing. | No. The uploaded video loops from the cloud. | A church that wants a YouTube stream to continue without keeping its own computer running. |
OBS’s official Help Portal describes it as free, open-source software with no watermarks or usage limitations, including commercial use: OBS Studio overview. A free license does not make an unattended local broadcast cost-free: the church still needs a powered computer, connectivity and a plan for responding to problems.

How to loop a recorded sermon with OBS
OBS is a local desktop workflow. The exact controls can vary with OBS version and operating system, so confirm the looping behavior in the version installed at your church. Do a private or unlisted rehearsal before broadcasting to the public.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm livestreaming is available for the YouTube channel. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live broadcast and follow the current YouTube Live workflow for that channel. Eligibility and setup requirements can depend on the channel; consult YouTube’s live streaming help rather than assuming every channel can go live immediately.
- Prepare the sermon recording. Keep the video file accessible on the computer that will run OBS. If you plan to play several recordings, organize the intended order and verify each file plays before the broadcast.
- Build an OBS scene with the video source. Add the prerecorded sermon as a media/video source in a scene. For multiple sermons, configure the source or playlist arrangement available in your OBS version, and enable looping where that source provides the option. The intended result is that playback returns to the beginning or advances to the next item; test the behavior rather than relying on a setting name alone.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube broadcast. Use the stream destination and current stream-key workflow shown in YouTube Studio and OBS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, send it in a public chat or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Run a rehearsal before going public. Start a private or unlisted test and check picture framing, audio level, the transition at the end of the sermon, and whether the next playback begins as intended. Check YouTube’s stream-health status as well as OBS.
- Choose who will monitor the stream. A local OBS broadcast depends on the computer and network remaining available. Arrange for someone to notice a stopped source, network problem or YouTube warning and know how to respond.
What to check when the stream is unstable
OBS connects from the computer directly to the streaming service. Its Help Portal explains that increasing dropped frames can mean the connection cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. See OBS’s connection and dropped-frames guidance.

- Dropped frames rise: Check the internet connection and OBS/YouTube stream health. A connection unable to sustain the selected bitrate is a likely cause; reduce the load or improve the connection, then test again.
- The sermon does not repeat or advance: Recheck the media source or playlist configuration in the installed OBS version. Test the full end-to-start transition in a private or unlisted broadcast.
- Video plays but audio is missing or inconsistent: Check the source’s audio routing and levels in OBS, then listen through a complete rehearsal, including the transition between recordings.
- YouTube interrupts or terminates the broadcast: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright or stream-health warning. A local encoder cannot override a platform rights restriction.
Check copyright before rebroadcasting
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, interruption or termination; even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Review the rights for the sermon recording and every element within it: worship songs and backing tracks, lyrics, photographs, illustrations, video clips and guest contributions. YouTube lists permission, applicable copyright exceptions, public domain and Creative Commons terms as possible routes for using another person’s work, but none guarantees that a claim or strike will not occur. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.

A church or nonprofit purpose does not automatically make use fair. YouTube says fair use depends on the circumstances and that nonprofit use is not an automatic defense; copyright exceptions also vary by jurisdiction. For a legal determination, consult a qualified professional in the relevant jurisdiction. See YouTube’s fair-use explanation.
