Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() with an explicit list of authorized school-site URLs, a consistent browser context, and a chosen capture scope. The example below saves both a viewport image and a full-page image for each URL. Change the readiness condition and display settings to suit the pages you are allowed to capture.
What you need before capturing
- Node.js and the Playwright package installed in your project. For installation and browser setup, follow the Playwright getting started guide.
- A list of public URLs supplied by the site owner or otherwise authorized for capture.
- An output directory. The script below writes into
screenshots/; create that directory first. - A decision about whether you need a standard viewport, the entire page, or a particular element.
Do not use this workflow to access student or staff portals unless the site operator has expressly authorized that scope.

Capture multiple school websites with Playwright
This JavaScript example uses Playwright’s library API. It opens each URL in a fresh browser context, waits for the page’s load event, and saves viewport and full-page PNGs.

}Replace the example domains with authorized URLs and give each target a stable, filename-safe name. The script captures both modes; remove either screenshot call if you only need one. Playwright documents these screenshot options in its screenshots guide and Page API.

Choose the right capture scope and display
Viewport, full page, or one element
- Viewport: omit
fullPageor set it tofalsefor the visible area at the configured viewport size. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the page beyond the current viewport, useful for a long homepage or notice page. - One element: locate a specific banner, menu, or content block and call
locator.screenshot()rather than capturing the whole page. For example:await page.locator('header').screenshot({ path: 'screenshots/school-a-header.png' });. Choose a selector that identifies the intended element on that site.
Viewport, devices, and image format
The example fixes the viewport at 1365 by 900 pixels. You can instead configure a mobile or tablet device profile, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, or color scheme through Playwright’s emulation settings. These settings control browser presentation; they do not establish that a school site provides a particular translation or layout. See Playwright emulation for the available controls.
PNG is the default format for a .png path. Playwright also supports JPEG and, where supported by the browser, WebP. Use the type and quality options when you need to control image encoding. A screenshot can also be returned as a buffer instead of saved to a path, which is useful when passing image bytes to another processing step; details are in the Page API.
Locale and language review
The example sets locale: 'en-IN' so browser locale-dependent behavior has a consistent setting. If you are reviewing a site’s language variants, use the site’s actual language URL or controls as well. Locale emulation cannot translate page content that the site does not provide.
Wait for the page state you actually need
waitUntil: 'load' waits for the page load event, but it does not guarantee that every asynchronous widget, image, or other dynamically rendered element is ready. For pages that populate content after load, wait for a relevant selector or another condition that represents the capture you need. Playwright supports navigation waiting and locator-based waits; consult the Page API for the current methods and options.
Use a fixed timeout appropriate to your environment and record failures rather than silently treating an incomplete capture as a valid image. Avoid waiting for network idle as a universal solution: some pages keep network activity open, and the right readiness signal depends on the site.
Keep repeat captures comparable
Use the same Playwright browser version, operating system or host image, viewport, device scale factor, locale, color scheme, and capture timing for baseline and later images. Screenshots can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, and headless mode. If you need repeatable visual comparisons, keep the capture environment stable; Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation explains snapshot comparison considerations.
A fresh browser context isolates cookies and storage from other contexts. The example closes each context after its target, which makes each site capture independent. See Browser contexts for details.

School pages can expose children’s personal information, including names, faces, results, or contact details. Limit captures to public pages and the visual material needed for the task, then review files before sharing or storing them in a broadly accessible location. Common problems and fixes
The output file is missing
Check that the screenshots directory exists and that the process can write to it. Keep the output name unique for each target and capture mode to avoid replacing a prior image.
The screenshot is blank or misses page content
Confirm the URL opens successfully and choose a readiness condition for the content being captured. The load event alone may precede client-rendered sections, delayed images, or widgets. If only one portion is missing, wait for that element rather than adding an arbitrary long delay.
Navigation times out
Check that the URL is correct and reachable from the machine running Playwright. A slow page or persistent network activity may not fit a generic readiness wait; select a navigation condition and timeout appropriate to the site, then wait explicitly for the content needed in the image.
Images differ between runs
Compare the browser and host environment, viewport, device scale factor, locale, color scheme, and timing. Differences between headless and headed runs or browser versions can affect rendered pixels.

Can locale emulation make a school website display Hindi?
No. It can set the browser locale, but the site must provide and serve a Hindi version.
Can Playwright capture a specific banner instead of the whole page?
Yes. Use a locator for the banner and call its screenshot method.
Does the example access private school portals?
No. Use only public pages or pages within a scope the site operator has expressly authorized.
