The trade-off is that OBS runs on your own computer, so your computer, internet connection, and stream need to remain operational. YouTube supports software encoders for computer streaming and recommends testing and monitoring the broadcast.
What “free” means for a 24/7 lesson stream
OBS does not charge for the software, but a continuous local stream still depends on the equipment and connection running it. A power cut, computer restart, software problem, or lost internet connection can interrupt the broadcast. YouTube and OBS guidance supports this as a free local-encoder route; it does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or establish a minimum computer specification.

For a lesson channel, this approach makes most sense if you already have a computer that can stay on and are willing to check the stream. If you need the computer off, consider a cloud-hosted option instead.
Check YouTube Live eligibility first
- Your channel must be verified.
- Your channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- The stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Confirm access to live streaming before spending time arranging lessons in an encoder. YouTube’s eligibility and policy rules apply whether you stream live camera footage or recorded lessons.

Set up a local OBS lesson stream
This is a practical outline for the local-encoder method. OBS and YouTube interfaces can change; follow the current labels in the software and YouTube Live Control Room. The available official guidance supports using an encoder, checking the preview, testing the stream, and monitoring audio and video; it does not establish a tested, version-specific playlist procedure.
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the OBS Project’s official site. OBS is free and open source, without a watermark or commercial-use restriction.
- Prepare your lesson files. Put the recordings you intend to show in a known order and check that each one plays correctly, including its audio. Keep the original files available in case you need to replace or reorder them.
- Build the lesson playback in OBS. Add the recorded lesson media to your scene and arrange the intended sequence using the playback or playlist controls available in your OBS setup. Enable looping if your chosen playback source provides that control. Check what happens at the end of one lesson and at the end of the full sequence; do not assume the next file starts automatically until you have tested it.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and use YouTube’s encoder setup to connect OBS. Treat the stream key as a password: use the key for the intended broadcast and do not share it publicly. The exact controls can vary with YouTube’s interface.
- Check the preview before going live. Verify that the correct lesson is visible, the audio is audible, and the stream is accessible to the audience you intend. YouTube recommends testing the workflow and reviewing the encoder preview.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that the lesson continues through the sequence and that both audio and video remain present. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring of stream quality; a test does not guarantee 24/7 uptime.
Test the loop and protect the lesson stream
Before relying on a continuous broadcast, run a test that covers a file transition and the point where the full lesson sequence should repeat. Watch the YouTube preview rather than relying only on OBS’s local display. Check that the intended lesson is playing, audio remains audible, and the broadcast can be accessed by its intended audience.

- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.

- The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
- Playback stops at a transition: Check whether the playback source is set to advance to the next file and whether looping is enabled for the sequence, not just an individual file.
- Video is present but sound is missing: Check the lesson’s audio in OBS and in the YouTube preview before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream drops: Check the computer and internet connection, then inspect the broadcast in Live Control Room. Local OBS depends on both the machine and its connection.
- A lesson is blocked or restricted: Review the content against YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A live format does not exempt recorded material from those rules.
When a cloud service is a better fit
A cloud-hosted looping service sends uploaded recordings from remote infrastructure, rather than relying on your home computer to stay on. Service terms, file limits, current prices, support, and uptime commitments vary; check those directly before choosing one. Do not treat a vendor’s uptime or performance statement as an independent guarantee.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. Upload your lesson recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
