For a free way to catch visual regressions, start with Playwright Test if your project already uses Playwright and you can manage screenshot baselines in your repository. BackstopJS is another self-managed option. If you want hosted review and a stated free allowance, compare Argos for CI and pull-request workflows with Chromatic for Storybook-centered projects. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try when you need an API or AI-agent screenshots rather than a visual-regression review system: it removes common page clutter before capture and bills only clean shots.
What “free Percy alternative” can mean
These tools do not all do the same job. Playwright Test and BackstopJS let your team manage visual comparisons itself. Argos and Chromatic add hosted review workflows, but their free plans have monthly usage limits. A screenshot, a billed snapshot, and a visual test are vendor-specific units; do not assume one provider’s quota translates directly to another’s.

Best alternatives by workflow
1. ScreenshotNeo — for screenshot API and AI-agent capture
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a direct Percy-style visual-regression review system. It is worth trying first when your immediate need is to capture clean website screenshots from code or an AI agent: it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, removes more than 60 known consent platforms as well as newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers.
It offers PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, with options including full-page capture, selector capture, viewport and device settings, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, and async or bulk jobs. Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients can use its take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. These features can support screenshot workflows, but ScreenshotNeo does not replace a purpose-built baseline comparison and pull-request approval system.

Environment consistency is essential. Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible. Otherwise, rendering differences can produce noise unrelated to a product change. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
3. BackstopJS — self-managed scenario-based comparisons
BackstopJS is a free, self-managed option described by Argos’s comparison article as scenario-configured, using Puppeteer or Playwright, and producing HTML diff reports. That article says it lacks a built-in collaborative team review interface and pull-request approval workflow. These implementation and workflow details come from a vendor-authored comparison, not BackstopJS’s own documentation; check the project’s current documentation and maintenance status before adopting it.

4. Argos — hosted CI and pull-request review
Argos describes capturing screenshots in the Playwright or Cypress browser already used by your tests, then reviewing results through a CI and pull-request workflow. This can suit teams that want hosted collaboration without changing their test browser. Because capture uses the team’s tests, you still need to define the browser and viewport matrix you want to cover.
In an Argos article dated July 28, 2026, the company stated that its Hobby tier allows 5,000 screenshots per month and its Pro plan costs $100 per month for 35,000 screenshots. Treat these as vendor-published plan details for that date, not permanent terms; check Argos’s current pricing before choosing.

Chromatic maps stories to visual tests and also describes integrations with Playwright and Cypress. Its Storybook focus makes it a natural shortlist option if stories are already the main way your team defines component states.
On its comparison page updated August 2026, Chromatic stated that its free plan includes 5,000 billed snapshots, its $179-per-month plan includes 35,000 snapshots, and additional snapshots cost $0.008 each. Those are Chromatic’s own plan statements as of that page update. Validate current plan terms and estimate whether your project’s snapshot volume fits.

How the options differ
| Option | Best fit | Capture and workflow | Published free allowance | Main responsibility or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Screenshot API calls and AI-agent capture | API or MCP capture; clean shots only are billed | 1,000 shots per month, per ScreenshotNeo plan information | It is not a Percy-style visual-regression review system; use a separate comparison workflow if you need managed baseline review. |
| Playwright Test | Teams already running Playwright | Local test assertions and repository-managed baselines | No service allowance; comparison is built into Playwright Test | Your team manages baseline updates, environment consistency, and collaboration. |
| BackstopJS | Teams comfortable with self-managed, scenario-based tests | Scenario capture and HTML diffs, as described by Argos’s comparison | Free, self-managed software, per Argos’s comparison | That comparison describes no built-in team review UI or PR approval workflow; verify current project status. |
| Argos | Hosted CI and pull-request review with Playwright or Cypress | Capture in the test browser; review through CI and PR workflow | 5,000 screenshots per month on Hobby, per Argos’s July 28, 2026 article | Your own tests determine browser and viewport coverage; plan terms can change. |
| Chromatic | Storybook-centered visual testing | Stories map to visual tests; also integrates with Playwright and Cypress | 5,000 billed snapshots, per Chromatic’s page updated August 2026 | “Billed snapshots” is Chromatic’s unit; do not equate it with another provider’s screenshot count. |
How to choose without exceeding a free tier
- Match the tool to your existing test setup. If Playwright already drives your pages, first try its assertions. For Storybook components, shortlist Chromatic. If you use Playwright or Cypress and want hosted CI review, evaluate Argos.
- Define what counts as a test capture. List the pages or components, meaningful states, viewports, and test runs you plan to cover. This gives you a working monthly volume estimate; then compare it with each service’s own quota unit.
- Decide where baselines and review should live. Repository-managed baselines avoid a hosted review service but require your team to handle changes and collaboration. Hosted workflows offer a review interface, subject to each provider’s plan and setup.
- Keep rendering conditions stable. Use consistent operating system, browser version, browser settings, and headless configuration for baseline generation and comparison. Changes in these conditions may create rendering differences.
- Recheck vendor terms before adopting. The Argos and Chromatic allowances above are tied to the dates of their cited pages, and their units are not interchangeable.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need screenshots rather than a managed visual-diff approval workflow, a single API request can return an image. The example below saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL with the page you need. See the API documentation for parameters such as output format, viewport, and full-page capture.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
With ScreenshotNeo, cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Practical limits to keep in mind
- Local comparisons are only as stable as their environment. A changed OS, browser version, rendering setting, or headless mode can make screenshots differ even when the page’s intended design has not changed.
- Capture coverage is a team decision. A local test browser or a service that captures in your test browser cannot cover viewports and states your tests never exercise.
- Free hosted usage is finite. Work out likely capture volume from pages, states, viewports, and runs, then check the provider’s definition of a billable unit and current terms.
- Capture and visual review are separate capabilities. A screenshot API can produce an image, while baseline comparison, change review, and approval may require a different tool or workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playwright’s screenshot assertion a Percy replacement?
It can replace the capture-and-compare part for teams willing to manage baselines and review in their own repository and test workflow; it does not provide the same hosted review workflow described for Argos or Chromatic.
Are 5,000 Argos screenshots the same as 5,000 Chromatic snapshots?
Not necessarily. Argos and Chromatic describe different vendor-specific usage units, so compare each service’s current billing definitions rather than treating the allowances as equivalent.
Does ScreenshotNeo review visual diffs like Percy?
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. The supplied product information does not establish a Percy-style visual comparison or pull-request approval workflow.
