To capture a page behind a login with Apify, automate an authorized sign-in in a browser, navigate to the protected URL, wait until the specific content you need is ready, take a screenshot, and save the image to an Apify key-value store. The login steps and selectors depend on the target site; the example below is a starting point, not a universal login script.
What you need before capturing a protected page
- An Apify Actor project and a supported browser automation library, such as Puppeteer or Playwright. Apify documents screenshot capture with Puppeteer and says a similar example can be implemented with Playwright.
- Permission to sign in to the account and capture the page. Check the target site’s current rules and access controls.
- The login URL, protected page URL, and the target page’s relevant selectors or other signals that show its content is ready.
- Credentials supplied securely at runtime, rather than embedded in source code or printed to logs.
Apify Academy’s login lesson uses Yahoo as a teaching example. Its selectors, redirects, consent screens, multifactor prompts, and anti-automation behavior should not be assumed to match another site. See Apify Academy’s login lesson for the example flow.

Choose Puppeteer or Playwright
Use the library already supported by your Actor project when it meets the target site’s needs. Apify’s screenshot guide demonstrates Puppeteer and notes that the example would look almost exactly the same with Playwright. The cited documentation does not establish a universal winner or comparative performance benchmark.
- Choose based on your project’s runtime and existing browser setup.
- Confirm that your chosen library can handle the target site’s sign-in and session behavior.
- Check the API names and runtime configuration for the SDK version actually installed; Apify examples may span SDK generations.
Capture a logged-in screenshot and save it to Apify
This Puppeteer-oriented outline shows the required order. Replace the example URLs and selectors with values for a site you are authorized to access, and adapt the Actor imports and storage calls to your installed Apify SDK version.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Open a browser and the login page. Start the browser in the Actor environment and visit the target site’s sign-in URL.
- Complete that site’s login flow. Locate the correct username and password fields, submit the form, and handle any site-specific redirects or required prompts. Do not assume a basic form is sufficient if the site requires multifactor authentication or another step.
- Verify the authenticated state. Wait for a reliable post-login signal, such as a signed-in navigation element or redirect to an expected account page. A successful form submission alone does not prove that authentication completed.
- Open the protected page. Navigate to the destination and wait for navigation as appropriate. Then wait for the content or UI element that matters to the screenshot; a generic page load event may occur before asynchronous content is ready.
- Capture the page. Use the browser library’s screenshot method. Apify’s guide demonstrates
page.screenshot(). - Store and verify the output. Save the returned image buffer to an Apify key-value store with an image content type, then confirm that the record is present and that its access permissions match your needs.
Apify’s screenshot guide shows Actor.setValue and Apify.setValue patterns across SDK generations. Check the current API for your project version before using either method. Key-value stores can hold arbitrary files and records; whether a stored screenshot is accessible to others depends on configured account settings and resource permissions. See Apify key-value store documentation and Apify resource access documentation.
Keep session cookies out of source and logs
Browser cookies can maintain authenticated status and may be reused when creating a later browser context. Apify Academy demonstrates retrieving cookies from a Playwright browser context or a Puppeteer page. Treat session cookies as credentials: restrict who can access them, avoid logging their values, and do not place them in source code or shared output. Reuse them only when the target site’s rules and your authorization permit it.

Wait for the right page state
Timing is a common reason for a screenshot that shows a login page, a loading state, or incomplete content. Apify’s waiting guide recommends waiting for navigation before taking a screenshot of a loaded page. For a dynamic application, also wait for a page-specific signal, such as the visible element that contains the content you intend to capture.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Wait for the sign-in flow to finish before navigating to the protected URL.
- Wait for the protected page’s key element or state, not only for the browser to report that navigation began or completed.
- Use a bounded timeout and handle the timeout explicitly, so an Actor does not save a misleading partial image as if it were a successful capture.
- When the page can change after loading, consider whether the screenshot should represent the initial state or a later state, and wait accordingly.
Where Apify saves the screenshot
The documented approach is to write the screenshot buffer to an Apify key-value store as a file with an image content type. After the Actor run, check the store record and its configured access permissions before sharing or exposing the image. Do not assume the stored file is either public or private without checking those settings.

Troubleshoot common capture failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The screenshot shows the login form | Authentication did not finish, the login selectors do not match, or the site required another step. | Verify each selector against the actual sign-in page, wait for a post-login signal, and handle redirects or required multifactor prompts. |
| The screenshot shows a blank or incomplete page | The capture ran before navigation or asynchronous content was ready. | Wait for navigation and then for the specific content or UI state needed in the image. |
| A cookie or stored session does not restore access | The session may have expired, may belong to a different browser context, or may not be reusable under the site’s rules. | Authenticate again when appropriate, verify cookies are handled in the intended context, and follow the target site’s access requirements. |
| The Actor cannot find a storage method or behaves differently from an example | The example may use another Apify SDK generation. | Check the documentation and method names for the SDK version installed in the Actor project. |
| The saved image cannot be accessed as expected | Key-value store access follows account configuration and explicit resource permissions. | Review the store and resource access settings rather than assuming the screenshot is public or private. |
| The site blocks or challenges automated access | The target site may apply anti-automation controls or other access restrictions. | Do not attempt to bypass controls without authorization. Check the site’s current rules and use an approved access method. |
Or skip the browser setup
For a public page that does not require account authentication, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not replace a browser login flow for reaching a protected page; use the Apify browser workflow above when authentication is required.

Can I use the same login selectors on every site?
No. Selectors and sign-in steps are specific to the target site’s current page and authentication flow.
