Vortex is the best starting point for most people who want one free mod manager for several PC games: Nexus Mods says it supports more than 30 games and integrates with its mod site. Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is a strong alternative for games it fully supports, particularly Bethesda titles. Neither choice guarantees the same features for every game, edition, storefront, or operating system, so check your exact setup before installing.
Best free mod manager for multiple games: Vortex vs. Mod Organizer 2
Vortex and MO2 are both free options, but they suit different priorities. Vortex emphasizes broad game coverage and Nexus Mods integration. MO2 offers a distinct workflow for its fully supported games, while its documentation warns that support for other games can be more limited.

| Manager | Best use | Support caveat | Platform caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vortex | Managing mods across multiple games, especially when you find or install mods through Nexus Mods. Nexus Mods describes it as supporting more than 30 games. Confirm support for the specific game and the features you need. | Nexus Mods says Linux is not currently a supported Vortex platform and gives no confirmed timeline for official Linux support. | Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) | Games listed as fully supported, particularly Bethesda titles, for users who want MO2’s game-specific workflow. | MO2 distinguishes full support from basic support. With basic support, files may be placed virtually, but conflicts can go unnoticed when files do not overlap, and some top-level DLL or executable arrangements can be problematic. Can you use one mod manager for different games?
Yes, if the manager supports each game you want to mod. “Supports” is not a single level of compatibility: a title may have full support, basic support, or no useful support for your intended workflow. A broad headline game count is a useful starting point, not proof that every title offers the same management features.
Vortex is the broader multi-game option in this comparison. Nexus Mods names Skyrim, Fallout, The Witcher series, and Stardew Valley among examples on its Vortex page. MO2’s support documentation lists fully supported games including Skyrim variants, Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout titles, and Tale of Two Wastelands. Its list can change, so consult the current page rather than relying on an older list.

Which mod manager supports your game? Check these four things
- Exact game: Look up the title in the manager’s current support list. For MO2, check whether it is fully or basically supported, not just whether it appears.
- Edition and storefront: Verify the exact edition—especially for MO2, whose release notes identify Windows Store and Game Pass versions as incompatible with its virtual filesystem.
- Operating system: Confirm platform support before you install. Nexus Mods’ FAQ says Linux is not currently a supported Vortex platform and gives no confirmed timeline for official support.
- Mod installation requirements: Check whether the game needs a separate game-specific loader or API. A manager organizes mods; it does not necessarily replace the software a game requires to load them.
Where a game-specific loader fits: Stardew Valley and SMAPI
SMAPI is Stardew Valley’s mod loader, not a general-purpose mod manager competing directly with Vortex or MO2. A Stardew setup can use SMAPI to load mods and a manager to organize them; check each mod’s instructions for its required installation method.
SMAPI’s current site lists version 4.5.2 and says it requires Stardew Valley 1.6.14 or later on Linux, macOS, Windows, or Steam Deck. These version requirements can change; check SMAPI’s official site for the current release and instructions.

What about the Nexus Mods App?
Nexus Mods says its app may continue working, but it will not receive updates or fixes, and there is no direct automatic migration to Vortex. For a current recommendation, start with Vortex or compare it with MO2 based on your games rather than treating the app as an actively maintained choice. Nexus Mods’ FAQ was last updated January 14, 2026.

- Choose Vortex if you want one manager for a range of games and value its integration with Nexus Mods—after verifying support for every specific title.
- Choose MO2 if your games are on its fully supported list and its workflow fits how you want to manage them.
- Choose neither yet if your game, edition, storefront, or operating system is unsupported or unclear. Check the manager’s official support information and the game’s mod instructions first.
