For an easy free start, use Scaniverse on iOS or Android: Trimble’s guidance describes it as processing captures on-device and exporting SPZ files. If you want more control and can handle a local computer workflow, Nerfstudio’s open-source Splatfacto is a stronger fit, but it requires prepared image data and suitable GPU memory. Polycam offers guided capture, but its free tier is limited and does not include Gaussian-splat export according to Trimble’s overview. SuperSplat is for editing an existing scene, not creating one.
There is no cited, controlled test comparing the visual quality of all these tools on the same capture. The practical choice is therefore about workflow, free limits, hardware, and export needs—not a universal quality ranking.

What a Gaussian Splatting tool does
Gaussian Splatting represents a scene as many 3D volumetric Gaussians that can be projected into a view and rasterized. Nerfstudio notes that GPU rasterization can render faster than neural radiance-field representations; its Splatfacto is Nerfstudio’s implementation of the approach and may evolve separately from the original method. Nerfstudio’s Splatfacto documentation explains the method and workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
“Creating a scene” can refer to several different stages: capturing images or video, training or processing them into a splat, viewing the result, and cleaning up artifacts. A tool that edits or views a splat is not necessarily a scene generator, and free access can mean local processing rather than unlimited cloud processing.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Industrial-Grade Accuracy】Achieve single-frame accuracy up to 0.03 mm and volumetric accuracy of 0.03 mm + 0.05 mm x L(m), faithfully reproducing the finest surface details and complex geometries with exceptional consistency. Which tool should you choose?
Choose Scaniverse for the simplest free mobile route
If your priority is capturing with a phone and avoiding a paid cloud workflow, Scaniverse is the clearest documented starting point: Trimble lists it as free on iOS and Android, with on-device processing and SPZ export. That is different from a desktop training workflow, and the cited guidance does not establish that its visual output outperforms other tools.

Choose Nerfstudio if you want local control
Splatfacto is a better fit if you want to work with prepared image data, train locally, inspect or render the result, and export a PLY. Nerfstudio says splatting works much better when initialized from existing geometry such as COLMAP points. That flexibility comes with technical setup and GPU requirements.
Choose Polycam only if its free limits fit your job
Polycam’s current pricing page lists Free at $0, Basic at $150 per year or $30 per month, and Business at $400 per user per year. These are page-listed terms checked October 4, 2026, not permanent guarantees. The page describes Free as limited and includes GLTF exports; its FAQ lists a 150-image limit for free users and up to 2,000 images on paid plans. Trimble’s overview says free users do not get splat export. Basic lists unlimited Gaussian splats and more export formats. Check Polycam’s pricing page for current terms before committing.

Use SuperSplat after you already have a scene
SuperSplat belongs at the cleanup stage: it can help remove distracting floating artifacts or background clutter from a splat, but it does not replace the capture or training tool that produced the scene.
Hardware and local performance
Nerfstudio estimates about 6 GB of memory for default Splatfacto and 12 GB for Splatfacto-big, which it describes as higher quality with more Gaussians and slower speed. These are estimates for Nerfstudio’s variants, not universal minimums for every Gaussian Splatting app. Its workflow uses the gsplat rasterization backend and discusses CUDA setup. See the Nerfstudio documentation for its current details.

A separate gsplat paper reported benchmark results on an A100 using the MipNeRF360 dataset averaged across seven scenes: the gsplat authors reported 5.6 GB memory and 19.39 minutes at 30,000 iterations in 2025; the original 3DGS implementation in that setup used 9.0 GB and 26.19 minutes. The paper reports similar quality metrics for that configuration. These are research benchmark results, not a performance forecast for a consumer PC or evidence that every current app is faster. The paper states gsplat is available under Apache License 2.0. Read the gsplat paper.

A practical way to choose
- Decide where processing should happen. Pick on-device Scaniverse for phone convenience, Nerfstudio or another local desktop option for local control, or a cloud option if you lack suitable local hardware.
- Check the actual free allowance. For Polycam, verify capture, image-count, and export limits against the current pricing page; for other services, check their current terms before relying on availability.
- Confirm the destination format. Match the documented SPZ, PLY, or GLTF output to the app or workflow where you intend to view or use the scene.
- Try one representative capture. Use the same small scene and intended export destination when comparing options. No cited source provides a controlled, cross-tool comparison that supports naming one visual-quality winner.
