Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best free encryption tool for Windows depends on what you need to protect: use Windows Device Encryption or BitLocker for an entire drive, VeraCrypt for a mounted encrypted container or removable drive, Cryptomator for files synced to cloud storage, and Gpg4win for certificate- or OpenPGP-based file exchange. These tools protect different things, so choose by scope, Windows edition and recovery needs—not by algorithm name alone.
Which free Windows encryption tool fits your job?
| What you need | Option to consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Protect an entire Windows drive from offline access | Device Encryption or BitLocker, if your PC and Windows edition support the feature | Availability varies; you must be able to retrieve the recovery key. Microsoft explains Device Encryption eligibility and BitLocker Drive Encryption. |
| Mount an encrypted container like a disk, or encrypt removable storage | VeraCrypt | More setup than a simple folder workflow; system encryption adds pre-boot and recovery considerations. VeraCrypt supports container, device and system encryption. |
| Encrypt files before placing them in cloud-sync storage | Cryptomator | Files are exposed to local software while the vault is unlocked, and some metadata may remain visible. See the project’s repository and security target. |
| Exchange files or email through certificate or OpenPGP workflows | Gpg4win | It is built for encryption workflows involving recipients and keys, not as a drop-in whole-drive or cloud-vault tool. Gpg4win describes its file and email encryption purpose. |
| Send a password-protected archive | 7-Zip is a candidate to investigate | Current encryption details are not established here; confirm them in current official documentation before relying on it for sensitive transfers. 7-Zip’s official site. |
All of these are software options, not a cure for an already compromised computer. Malware running on the PC may capture a password or read files after you unlock them. Keep a separate backup of important encrypted data and make sure you can recover the key or password needed to open it.

Windows built-in encryption: check edition and device eligibility
Windows has three related features that should not be confused: Encrypting File System (EFS) for selected files or folders, Device Encryption for an eligible PC’s drive, and BitLocker Drive Encryption. Microsoft’s support article for encrypting a file or folder says EFS is unavailable in Windows Home. That does not mean every Home PC lacks built-in encryption: Device Encryption is available on a wider range of devices, including some Home devices, if hardware and setup requirements are met. Microsoft lists full BitLocker Drive Encryption for Pro, Enterprise and Education editions. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance explains the distinction.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Device encryption on Windows 10.
- If the setting is present, check its status and use the on-screen control to turn it on if appropriate. A local Windows account does not automatically enable Device Encryption; signing in with a Microsoft or work/school account can associate the recovery key with that account.
- If the setting is missing, check Windows’ encryption-support status and the listed prerequisites. Microsoft notes that TPM, Windows Recovery Environment, and PCR7/Secure Boot binding can affect eligibility.
Device Encryption can turn on automatically on supported systems, but do not assume it is active just because Windows includes the feature. Confirm its status and keep the recovery key somewhere you can access if the PC asks for it.

- Certified to FIPS 197 - High-level information security standard approved by the U.S. Government
- Brute-Force Password Attack Protection - Data is automatically erased after 6 failed access attempts. The data and encryption key are securely destroyed and the crypto drive is reset
- Rugged Double-Layer Waterproof* Design - Protects the crypto drive against knocks, drops, break-in and submerging in water. The electronics are shielded by a hardended inner case. The rubberised silicone outer casing provides a final layer of protection
- Auto-lock - The crypto drive will automatically encrypt all data and lock when removed from a PC/Mac or when the screen saver or "computer lock" function is activated on the host PC/Mac
- Secure Entry - Data cannot be accessed without the correct high-strength alphanumeric 8-16 character password. A password hint option is available. The password hint cannot match the password
When to use EFS or full BitLocker
EFS makes sense when you need file- or folder-level protection on a supported Windows edition and can manage its certificate and recovery implications. For protection of the entire drive against someone removing it or accessing it offline, BitLocker is the relevant scope: Microsoft describes it as a built-in feature that encrypts the entire drive. Its recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. Hardware, firmware or software changes can trigger a recovery prompt, so locate and verify the recovery key before depending on encryption.
VeraCrypt: containers and removable drives
VeraCrypt is free and open source, and its official site lists Windows, macOS and Linux support. It can create a virtual encrypted disk inside a file, encrypt a partition or storage device such as a USB flash drive or hard drive, and encrypt a Windows system partition or drive. This makes it a flexible choice when you want an encrypted volume you can mount when needed, or encrypted removable storage, rather than automatically protecting every file on the PC. See VeraCrypt’s feature overview and documentation.

What to consider before system encryption
Encrypting the Windows system drive is a more involved choice than creating a container. VeraCrypt system encryption uses pre-boot authentication, and modern EFI systems have constraints around the system partition and boot process. Plan for how you will recover access before proceeding, and follow the documentation for your configuration. VeraCrypt also warns that SSD TRIM can reveal which sectors are unused; consider that metadata exposure when deciding whether it fits your threat model.
The VeraCrypt site listed version 1.26.29 as released on June 9, 2026, including Argon2id support for non-system volumes and fixes for two security issues. Release details can change; check the current official download and release information before installing.

Cryptomator: encrypt files before cloud sync
Cryptomator is designed to encrypt files on your device before they are stored in a cloud-sync folder. Its virtual-drive workflow works with services including Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, MEGA, pCloud, ownCloud and Nextcloud, according to the project. The project describes AES encryption with a 256-bit key length, encrypted filenames and an obfuscated folder structure.
Know what a cloud vault does not hide
A locked vault helps keep stored content from being readable by the cloud provider, but it does not protect files while you are using them on an infected PC. Cryptomator’s security target warns that malware may read passwords as they are entered or access files in an unlocked vault. Applications may also create copies outside Cryptomator’s control, and information such as file sizes and timestamps may remain exposed. Keep the vault locked when you do not need it and protect the computer itself.

Choose and set up encryption without losing access
- Define the scope. Choose whether you need selected files, a portable archive, a cloud-sync vault, removable storage, or the complete system drive.
- Check compatibility. Confirm your Windows edition for EFS or full BitLocker, and verify device eligibility for Device Encryption before planning around it.
- Plan recovery before enabling protection. Save recovery keys, certificates or passwords separately from the encrypted data. For BitLocker, verify you can retrieve the 48-digit recovery key.
- Make a separate backup. Keep another copy of important files, and ensure that backup can be restored with the credentials you retain.
- Test access with non-critical data first. Confirm that the intended recipient, other device or recovery process can open the encrypted material before entrusting it with the only copy.
