It runs from a USB drive or CD without installation, and its project says it can work with Clonezilla images. If you are comfortable with Clonezilla’s more technical workflow, Clonezilla itself remains a free, open-source option. Macrium Reflect is worth comparing for Windows drive moves, but its current cloning page offers a free trial—not proof of a permanently free edition.

Rescuezilla: best for a graphical, bootable workflow
Rescuezilla is the clearest choice if your main reason for looking beyond Clonezilla is that you want point-and-click controls. Its bootable mini operating system runs from a USB stick or CD, so you do not need to install it on the drive you intend to copy. The project describes it as a graphical interface for Clonezilla and says it can back up, restore, and recover Windows, Mac, and Linux machines.

Treat that as the project’s compatibility claim, not as a guarantee that every image or hardware setup will work. Rescuezilla’s release information lists version 2.6.2, released May 15, 2026. Its release notes have also described image exploration as temporarily out of service in v2.6.0 variants, so do not assume that feature is available in every build; check the current release notes at Rescuezilla releases.
#1 Best Overall
- Supports Standard Desktop 2.5"/3.5" SATA Hard Drives or SSD.
- Supports hard drives up to 10TB.
- Plug and play, no drivers needed.
- Supports Offline Cloning up to 60Mbps.
- Supports Transfer Speeds up to 5Gbps (USB 3.0),480Mbps (USB 2.0), 12Mbps (USB 1.1)
Clonezilla: still a strong free option if you accept its constraints
Clonezilla remains a sensible choice when a technical, bootable workflow is acceptable. The project describes Clonezilla as free and open source. Clonezilla Live is aimed at one machine, while Lite Server and Server Edition are intended for larger deployments.
Clonezilla’s own documentation says it does not provide online imaging or cloning, nor differential or incremental backup. The partition being imaged or cloned must be unmounted, and the destination partition must be at least as large as the source partition. These requirements can rule it out for workflows that need to operate on a mounted system or fit a partition onto a smaller destination.

- OFFLINE CLONER, NO COMPUTER NEEDED: Copy one SATA drive to another at the press of a button, up to 60MBps, with the dock unplugged from any PC. Target drive must be the same size as the source or larger.
- READS AND WRITES TWO DRIVES AT ONCE: Both bays mount as separate drives when connected to a computer over USB, so you can move files between them or work off both. Hot-swappable, tool-free, with an HDD access LED per bay.
- SATA ONLY, 2.5in AND 3.5in: Fits bare 2.5in and 3.5in SATA hard drives and SATA SSDs. It does NOT support IDE/PATA drives, drives with a 4-pin Molex power connector, M.2 or NVMe drives, and drives are not included.
- WHAT COMES IN THE BOX: Docking station, power adapter and a USB Type-C cable. The cable is USB-C on the dock end - check your computer has a USB-C port or add your own USB-C to USB-A cable before you order.
- USB 3.0 SPEEDS UP TO 5GBPS: Plug and play on Windows and Mac with no drivers to install. Real-world speed is set by the drives you fit - a mechanical hard drive will not reach 5Gbps, and offline cloning runs up to 60MBps by design.
The project lists an x86 or x86-64 processor and 196 MB of RAM as minimum requirements for Clonezilla Live. These are the project’s stated minimums, not a guarantee of performance or compatibility with a particular PC. Its download page says current listed release branches no longer provide i386 images and links to ISO and USB preparation instructions. Check the current Clonezilla download page before preparing boot media because release and architecture details can change.
Cloning versus imaging: choose the workflow you actually need
Cloning copies a source drive directly to another drive. It is the straightforward workflow when you are replacing a disk or moving to a new SSD and have both drives available. Imaging saves a disk image file that you can store and restore later; it requires separate storage for that image file. Rescuezilla’s project overview explains this distinction and presents its tools for both workflows.

- Support USB 3.0 external, SATA-I/II/III internal; Works great with 2.5 inch and 3.5 inch SATA HDD/SSD.
- Support transfer speeds up to 6Gbps by UASP transfer protocol, which is up to 20% faster than USB 3.0. Speeds up to 5Gbps (USB 3.0),480Mbps (USB 2.0), 12Mbps (USB 1.1)
- Support Offline Cloning up to 60Mbps. No drivers needed, easy installation; Offline clone is from source disk to target disk, make sure the capacity of target disk is larger or equivalent to that of source disk; not support online Clone
- Built-in Power Control Switch; Highly efficient (12V, 3A), stable and reliable DC power source a steady supply of energy; Automatic sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity saves energy.
- Tool-free installation on Windows 10 through XP, Mac OS X (not compatible with M1/M2-based Mac), and Linux / Unix, Support hot-swapping and easy set up.(No drivers are required for the disk dock itself as it uses the standard USB Mass Storage class)
Before starting, check that the destination drive has enough capacity for the partitions and data you intend to copy, and confirm your computer can connect to both drives or to the target through a compatible adapter or enclosure. A bootable USB is useful for live tools such as Rescuezilla or Clonezilla; use the chosen project’s current instructions to prepare it. A USB drive you already own may be suitable, so purchasing one is not necessarily required.
Why Macrium Reflect is a comparison, not a confirmed free pick
Macrium Reflect’s cloning page describes moving an HDD to an SSD or another HDD, with cloning available from the installed application or a bootable environment. The page advertises a free trial. Because that page does not establish a permanently free edition, treat Macrium as a trial or commercial comparison unless its current official licensing information confirms that a free plan covers your intended use.

Check these details before you clone
- Back up important files. Drive operations can overwrite data on the destination; verify which disk is the source and which is the target before confirming a copy.
- Check capacity and partition layout. Clonezilla documents a destination-partition size constraint. Other tools may have their own requirements, so consult the current documentation for the selected version.
- Confirm boot and connection compatibility. A tool’s general operating-system support does not guarantee that it will boot or recognize storage on every PC. Check the machine’s boot settings and drive interface requirements.
- Use official download and media-preparation instructions. Release versions, supported architectures, and boot-media steps can change; start with the project’s current download page.
- Verify commercial licensing before relying on a free tier. A free trial is time-limited or otherwise conditional by definition; do not treat it as evidence of an ongoing free edition.
Verdict
Choose Rescuezilla for the strongest documented free graphical alternative and a bootable workflow; choose Clonezilla if you prefer its established open-source tool and can work within its offline and partition-size constraints. Macrium Reflect may suit a Windows cloning task, but the cited product page supports only a free-trial claim, not a confirmed permanent free option.
