Bloodstained is not an official Castlevania game, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner.
Which game is the better fit?
Choose Symphony of the Night for a specific Castlevania classic
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is the choice if you want the classic franchise entry centered on Alucard. Konami’s official history page dates its release to October 2, 1997, for PlayStation and Sega Saturn, and describes magical transformations, hidden weapons, secrets, and more than 140 enemies, bosses, and creatures. That enemy figure is Konami’s own description, not an independently audited count. Konami’s game history

Choose Bloodstained for Igarashi’s later take
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night suits a reader looking for Koji Igarashi’s later exploration-focused side-scrolling action RPG. Steam lists it as released June 18, 2019, developed by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games. Its listing describes Miriam fighting through a demon-infested castle to stop a curse that crystallizes her body, with weapons, spells, voice-acted scenes, and 2.5D graphics. Those are storefront descriptions, not independent judgments of quality. Bloodstained’s Steam listing

The creator connection is real, but it does not make the games identical or turn Bloodstained into a Castlevania release. In a 2017 interview with Game Developer, Igarashi discussed Bloodstained’s action in relation to Symphony of the Night: “Overall we try to keep that nostalgic gameplay while improving the parts we can fix in Bloodstained.” He also said the project began on Kickstarter in response to fans’ wish for another “Igavania” game, rather than simply as a title he personally wanted to make. The interviewer uses “Igavania” to describe Igarashi’s Castlevania design lineage; it is not established here as an official genre label. Read the August 21, 2017 interview

Can the sources settle which one is better?
No. The official pages establish release and product details, and Igarashi’s interview clarifies the creative relationship; they do not provide a comparable tested review, matched critic scores, or evidence that establishes one game as objectively superior. They also do not establish comparable playtime, completion time, difficulty, pacing, or atmosphere. Treat those as preference questions, not settled facts. Steam’s review totals and recent sentiment change over time, so they are not directly comparable quality measures without a dated, same-method analysis.
