Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best replacement for a WatchGuard Firebox depends on the security services you need, your WAN speed, VPN and site-to-site requirements, and how you want to manage the network. Fortinet FortiGate, Sophos Firewall/XGS, SonicWall TZ, and Cisco Meraki MX are sensible appliance families to compare; a cloud firewall service is a different option for businesses that do not want to operate an on-premises appliance. There is no supported universal winner or reliable like-for-like price ranking, so compare current quotes against the same requirements.
Start with your requirements, not the model name
A replacement should be sized for the traffic it will inspect, not selected by matching a Firebox model number or comparing headline firewall throughput. The relevant figure is the throughput a candidate can deliver with the security services you plan to enable. A device that looks adequate on a basic-firewall specification may not meet your needs under a more demanding inspection workload.

How to size a replacement firewall
Estimate headroom with services enabled
FUSE’s EU-focused 2026 SMB buying guide recommends using aggregate WAN bandwidth multiplied by 1.5 as a headroom rule of thumb, then choosing a model whose NGFW or threat-prevention throughput exceeds that figure with the intended inspection services enabled. This is reseller guidance, not a universal standard or vendor guarantee. Use it as a screening method, then check current specifications for the exact model, workload, and services you plan to run.
Use examples as examples
For an example involving a 1 Gbps fibre connection and a 50-user office, FUSE names the FortiGate 80F, Sophos XGS 136, Meraki MX85, WatchGuard M290, and Kerio NG500 as candidate models. That is an EU guide’s illustrative example, not a recommendation for every office of that size or proof that the models are equivalent. Model generations, availability, and performance can change; confirm the current specifications and suitable successor models for your country before buying.
Account for outages and resilience
If a firewall outage would cause significant lost revenue or productivity, ask an integrator or vendor whether high availability fits your requirements. FUSE notes that an active-passive arrangement requires two appliances and an appropriate license. Confirm the design, licensing, and failover behavior for the proposed models rather than assuming a second unit automatically provides the recovery you need.
Compare the main appliance alternatives
| Family | What may make it a fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fortinet FortiGate | Fortinet markets a small-business firewall range. FUSE characterizes FortiGate as strong on NGFW performance per euro and SD-WAN; treat that as the reseller’s perspective, not an independent benchmark conclusion. | Which current model meets inspected-throughput needs with your selected services enabled? Which bundle, support term, and management plan are required? |
| Sophos Firewall / XGS | FUSE highlights Sophos’s management interface and integration with Sophos Central. Existing use of Sophos endpoint or management products may be relevant when assessing operational fit. | Check performance with TLS inspection and your desired service set enabled. Confirm the exact management capabilities, bundle, and support terms for the proposed model. |
| SonicWall TZ | The TZ family appears among the commercial SMB firewall options in the cited comparisons. | Compare the services included in each feature bundle, cloud-management options, and support. Ask SonicWall or a reseller to confirm what remains available if a specific model’s security license expires. |
| Cisco Meraki MX | FUSE points to the dashboard, Auto-VPN, and unified cloud management as useful considerations for multi-site or MSP-managed environments. | Confirm the subscription terms, included capabilities, and what happens at expiry using current Cisco documentation. Compare the total cost across the same term as other quotes. |

When a cloud firewall service is a better fit
A cloud firewall service changes the operating model rather than providing a like-for-like appliance swap. Expert Insights presents NordLayer Cloud Firewall as a no-hardware option for small and midsize hybrid-cloud teams without dedicated firewall expertise. Before treating it as a replacement, establish whether the service covers your site-to-site connections, local network, regulatory obligations, and performance requirements. If you need an on-premises device to protect or connect local networks, a cloud service may not cover the same job.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the full cost, not just the appliance
Request quotes for the same country, contract period, security services, support level, and management needs. Ask each vendor or reseller to itemize the appliance, required subscriptions, support, management features, renewal pricing, and any other required components. Include migration or configuration labor if it is material to your decision.
Universal Connectivity’s February 13, 2026 pricing article describes firewall purchases as hardware plus recurring licensing and offers illustrative price ranges for example products. Those estimates are not current vendor quotes: prices vary by model, bundle, reseller, region, and date. The available evidence does not establish a dependable current price ranking across these families.

Use a like-for-like request for quote
Send each vendor or reseller the same requirements so differences in price and capability are easier to interpret:
- State the required performance: WAN throughput needed with your intended inspection services on, based on expected traffic and planned headroom.
- Describe the network: required interfaces, WAN connections, failover, VPN users, and site-to-site tunnels.
- Name the security services: specify the services you expect to use rather than comparing bundles by name alone.
- Define management and support: include centralized management needs, support response expectations, and who will operate the system.
- Specify commercial terms: request the same subscription duration, renewal pricing, and written explanation of license-expiry behavior.
- Include resilience and migration: if relevant, ask for a high-availability design and account for replacement, migration, and configuration work.
- Check the final configuration: verify current model availability, exact SKU, included services, performance assumptions, and regional terms before choosing.
How to choose among the shortlist
Shortlist by operational fit, then eliminate models that cannot meet your inspected-throughput or connectivity requirements. FortiGate merits consideration when its range and secure-networking features match the design; Sophos may be a natural comparison where Sophos Central and its management approach fit the team; Meraki deserves attention where dashboard-based multi-site management matters; and SonicWall TZ belongs in a quote comparison when its bundle and support offer meets the requirements. If avoiding an on-premises appliance is the priority, evaluate cloud firewall services separately against the network functions you actually need.
Choose only after comparing current, equivalent quotes and confirming specifications, subscriptions, support, and expiry behavior for the exact configuration. TechRadar’s broader 2025 small-business firewall coverage also treats a firewall as one layer in a wider security approach, rather than a substitute for the rest of a business’s security controls.
