Best Firefox Screenshots Alternatives for Capturing Web Pages

Firefox retired its hosted screenshot server, not browser capture. Here are the best alternatives for full-page, element, annotated, PDF, and automated screenshots.

Firefox Screenshots still captures web pages; Mozilla retired its hosted sharing server, not the browser’s screenshot feature. For a quick image, use Firefox’s built-in capture UI. For element-level or scripted captures, use DevTools. If you need annotation or PDF export, consider an extension such as OpenScreenShot or OpenCapture. For automated captures from an application or AI agent, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes common consent banners and overlays before capture, and does not bill failed or blank-page responses.

Firefox Screenshots was not discontinued

Mozilla’s 2019 clarification said the feature would remain in Firefox while the standalone Firefox-hosted server for saving and sharing captures was being retired. The built-in tool continued to support full-page and visible-area captures, cropping, downloads, and clipboard copying. Mozilla’s current support documentation also describes selecting a region or an automatically highlighted page part. Mozilla’s 2019 clarification and current Firefox Screenshots help explain the distinction.

Choose the option that matches the capture you need

Option Use it for What it offers Important limits
Firefox screenshot UI Fast, occasional captures without an add-on Full page, visible area, selected region, or highlighted page part; download or copy to clipboard. Mozilla Support Controls and labels can vary by Firefox version. Mozilla says interaction data is collected under the Firefox Browser Privacy Notice and documents an opt-out in data-collection settings.
Firefox Developer Tools Element capture or more control over scripted captures Capture the full page, an Inspector node, or use the Web Console :screenshot helper with options such as selector, delay, DPR, filename, and clipboard output. Mozilla DevTools documentation More technical; the screenshot toolbar icon must be enabled in toolbox settings for that workflow.
OpenScreenShot Firefox users who want annotation and multiple export formats The Mozilla Add-ons listing describes full-page, visible-area, and region capture; crop, arrows, text, shapes, blur; PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF export; clipboard, local history, and delayed or repeat-region captures. Listing says it requires desktop Firefox 140 or later and cannot capture browser-protected pages. The listing showed version 2.1.0, updated September 12, 2026, with no user reviews at the research date. Claims are not independently tested here.
OpenCapture Annotation or use across Firefox, Chrome, and Edge The vendor describes full-page, visible-area, and region capture, crop, drawing, text, shapes, blur, undo, and PNG/PDF export, with processing locally in the browser. The vendor describes tiled logo/text watermarking as a paid feature, priced at $5 for 1,000 credits as a one-time purchase. Check current terms and extension availability. Claims are not independently tested here.

Pick based on capture scope (viewport, region, element, or whole page), file format, annotation or redaction needs, browser/version compatibility, privacy practices, and cost. The extension feature and privacy descriptions above are listing or vendor claims, not an independent audit or reliability test.

Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot controls

  1. Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
  2. Open the page context menu and choose the screenshot command. Depending on your Firefox version and configuration, you can also use the screenshot button if it is available in the toolbar.
  3. Choose the full-page, visible-area, or region capture option. Firefox may also let you select a page part it highlights automatically.
  4. Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.

Use the built-in UI when you need a quick image rather than an editable document or repeatable automation. Mozilla’s documented interaction-data note applies to Firefox Screenshots: it says Firefox collects interactions such as using Copy or Save full page, but not the URL or details of the captured image. The opt-out is in Firefox’s technical and interaction data settings. Do not assume the same practices apply to third-party extensions.

Capture a full page or element with Firefox DevTools

Enable the screenshot toolbar button

  1. Open Firefox Developer Tools.
  2. Open toolbox settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
  3. Use the screenshot icon in the toolbox to capture the full page. Firefox saves the result to Downloads.

Capture an element

  1. Open the Inspector and select the page element.
  2. Open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.

Run a screenshot command

In the Web Console, Firefox’s :screenshot helper supports full-page capture, a CSS selector, delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard output, file output, and a chosen filename. For example, save the full page to a named PNG file:

For an element selected by CSS selector, a delay, or a particular device-pixel ratio, use the documented command options in Mozilla’s screenshot command reference. Full-page mode includes content beyond the current window bounds. Mozilla’s DevTools tips also documents the short full-page command form.

Consider an extension for editing or alternate exports

OpenScreenShot

OpenScreenShot’s Mozilla Add-ons listing describes capture of full pages, visible areas, and selected regions, plus crop, arrows, text, shapes, blur, and PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF export. It also lists clipboard copying, local history, shortcuts, and delayed or repeat-region capture. The listing says capture and editing are local and require no account; it identifies an MIT license, permissions for clipboard input and downloads/download-history access, and a developer declaration of no data collection. Those are listing/developer statements, not an independent privacy audit. The listing says protected browser pages cannot be captured.

Its site describes tiled text or logo watermarking as a paid option at $5 for 1,000 credits, one-time; verify current pricing and availability before relying on it. The project repository describes the project as AGPL-3.0-or-later and says an account is relevant to unlocking watermarking.

Common capture problems and what to try

  • The screenshot button is missing in DevTools: Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in toolbox settings, or use the Web Console helper.
  • You need one page element, not the whole page: Select it in Inspector and choose Screenshot Node; for command-line-style control, use the helper’s CSS selector option.
  • A protected browser page will not capture in an extension: OpenScreenShot’s listing explicitly excludes browser-protected pages. Use a supported page or a different capture route; no reviewed source establishes that every alternative can capture every site.
  • An extension’s behavior or pricing differs from its listing: Check the current add-on store listing or vendor page, since versions, availability, features, and prices can change.
  • You need annotation or PDF but Firefox’s built-in UI only gives you an image workflow: Evaluate an extension whose listing includes the specific editing and export functions you need, and confirm its current browser compatibility before installing.
