1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor driving a car, start with FINAL FANTASY XV. Its Regalia makes road travel part of the adventure, and the Royal Edition adds a controllable boat. If you mean varied ways to cross large regions rather than continuous driving, choose FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH. For classic airship-enabled overworld travel, the original FINAL FANTASY is the clearest pick.
Which Final Fantasy should you play for vehicle exploration?
There is no useful single winner across cars, mounts and airships: each offers a different kind of travel. This shortlist compares how the vehicle or traversal option feels, how it connects to exploration, and whether the game is available now. The recommendations are for exploration style, not an overall ranking of the series.

| To drive a car through a landscape | FINAL FANTASY XV | The Regalia can be driven manually or sent to a selected destination; Square Enix describes driving from the capital along back roads. | Driving sits alongside on-foot exploration; not every trip requires the car. The Royal Edition adds the controllable Royal Vessel boat. |
| Different traversal options across broad regions | FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH | Regional chocobos assist with terrain traversal, and Costa del Sol has a rideable two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle called a wheelie. | This is a mix of exploration modes, not evidence of continuous free driving. |
| A classic airship that changes overworld access | FINAL FANTASY (the original) | Square Enix says gaining the airship opens the world and lets players revisit earlier areas. | Think classic overworld travel, not a modern open-world driving game. |
| An airship-centered setting | FINAL FANTASY X | The Fahrenheit is a prominent airship in the official series retrospective. | The cited retrospective establishes the ship’s role, not the degree of free piloting. |
Best Final Fantasy for driving a car: FINAL FANTASY XV
FINAL FANTASY XV is the most direct fit if “vehicle exploration” means taking a car on the road. The Regalia is part of the journey through the game’s landscape: you can drive it yourself or select a destination for it to travel to. Square Enix frames the trip as a route between the capital and back roads, making this the strongest car-focused recommendation. See the official game listing and Square Enix’s Regalia road-trip page.

It includes the Royal Vessel, which can be controlled while exploring the coastal stretch between Cape Caem and Altissia. That adds a second vehicle experience, though the game’s travel also includes exploring on foot. The Royal Edition is described on the official game listing.

Best for varied regional traversal: FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH suits players who want different ways to cross expansive environments rather than a car-centered road trip. Its regional chocobos help with terrain traversal. Square Enix says that after catching a chocobo in the wild, players can call it in that region for special assistance across its home terrain; this is a publisher description, not a claim that chocobos function as cars or provide unrestricted flight. The game’s official world page explains the regional role.
There is also a distinctly vehicle-like diversion: at Costa del Sol, Cloud can ride a wheelie, a two-wheeled self-balancing vehicle. Nintendo describes the game as featuring expansive environments and lists it for Switch 2 on its official product page. Square Enix confirmed Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S availability in June 2026 in its platform announcement. Check the regional store listing for current edition, format and availability.

Best classic airship exploration: FINAL FANTASY
The original FINAL FANTASY is the clearest recommendation for a traditional overworld experience where gaining an airship changes how much of the map you can reach. In a retrospective dated December 17, 2020, Square Enix said access to the airship opens the world for story progress and lets players return to previous areas. That makes it a strong pick for classic airship-enabled exploration, not a modern open-world vehicle simulator. Read the Square Enix retrospective.
FINAL FANTASY X: an airship-focused setting, with a caveat
FINAL FANTASY X belongs on an airship-themed shortlist because the Fahrenheit is a prominent, recovered and restored airship. The official series retrospective establishes its importance to the story, but not how freely players can pilot it or explore from it. If unrestricted airship travel is your deciding factor, the original FINAL FANTASY has clearer support for that specific experience in the cited material. See Square Enix’s airship retrospective.
