There is no single best filament for every 3D-printed optical illusion. For effects made with light passing through the print, start with translucent PETG or translucent PLA and tune the walls and infill to control brightness and diffusion. For effects built around shifting highlights, silk PLA is the relevant choice: its glossy surface reflects light, but it is not the transparent option.
The filament, its color and formulation, the model’s geometry, and the slicer settings all shape the result. No standardized head-to-head test establishes a category-wide winner between PLA and PETG.

For a light-based illusion, translucent PETG is a reasonable first candidate when you also want functional toughness. Translucent PLA is a valid alternative for colored or diffused effects. Choose silk PLA when the surface reflection—not light passing through the object—is doing the visual work.

For more light to pass through
Test thinner walls or fewer wall loops. Snapmaker says fewer loops increase transmission for its PETG Translucent product. For its translucent PLA, Anycubic recommends one or two perimeters, lower infill, and using the high end of its stated temperature range when aiming for greater clarity. These are product-specific recommendations, not universal settings for every spool or printer.

For a softer, more even glow
Try thicker walls or more wall loops. Snapmaker and Anycubic both describe thicker construction as producing more diffusion. This can make an illuminated illusion look more even, though it reduces the amount of light transmitted directly.
For clarity, reduce scattering where appropriate
Bubbles and internal voids scatter light. Prusa’s transparent-object guide demonstrates dense rectilinear infill and a 0.05 mm layer height, alongside calibration, for its example. Those settings target clarity; they are not automatically the right choice for a design meant to diffuse light. See Prusa’s guide to transparent 3D prints.

Why the same material name can produce different results
“PLA” or “PETG” alone does not predict the finished optical effect. A 2021 study in PLOS ONE observed different spectral behavior in two same-color PLA filaments from different producers. The authors discuss processing, additives, and dyes as possible factors. The study covers its tested samples and diffuse-optics applications; it does not establish a ranking for every retail filament or for optical-illusion prints. Read the study.
That is why a small test print using the actual filament, color, geometry, and intended light source can be more informative than choosing by material label alone. Change one variable at a time—such as wall count—so you can tell what caused the visual change.

Print and troubleshoot translucent PETG carefully
Moisture can cause bubbling and reduce translucency. For its PETG Translucent product, Snapmaker recommends drying at 65°C for six hours and provides product-specific temperature, speed, and cooling guidance. Follow the instructions for your own filament rather than transferring these settings to another brand or formulation. A dryer or dry box is relevant if moisture is causing print problems; it is not a universal requirement.
Also set expectations: Snapmaker states, “Please note that FDM 3D printing cannot achieve glass-like transparency, especially for complex geometries.” A translucent FDM print can still create compelling illumination and diffusion, but it should not be treated as optically clear glass.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the mechanism: transmitted light, diffused glow, or reflective highlights.
- Match the filament: translucent PETG or PLA for light passing through; silk PLA for glossy reflections.
- Plan the geometry: wall thickness and internal structure affect how much light passes through and how evenly it spreads.
- Use filament-specific settings: temperature, cooling, speed, and drying recommendations can differ by product.
- Expect iteration: test a representative section under the intended lighting before committing to a large print.
