Car and Driver names the Rivian R1T its favorite in its 2026 ranking, while Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV trims stand out for specified high tow ratings and long manufacturer-estimated range. The right choice depends on the exact trim, the trailer’s loaded weight and route, charging access, and how the truck fits your everyday driving.
Which electric pickup should you choose?
- Best editorial pick for all-around use: the Rivian R1T, based on Car and Driver’s 2026 assessment of its packaging, utility, and performance. That is the publication’s judgment, not a universal winner or a claim that every R1T trim suits every workload.
- Worth considering for a high published tow rating: the Chevrolet Silverado EV LT and specified GMC Sierra EV Denali configuration, each listed at up to 12,500 pounds by its manufacturer. Confirm the exact trim, battery, equipment, and vehicle ratings before matching one to a trailer.
- Worth considering for a long manufacturer-estimated range: the specified Silverado EV Max Range LT or Max Range Trail Boss, for which Chevrolet gives a GM-estimated maximum of 478 miles. That figure is not a towing-range estimate.
- For familiar full-size pickup packaging: consider the Ford F-150 Lightning, but note that the cited comparison is for model year 2025, not a current model-year guarantee of availability.
These are starting points, not substitutes for checking the particular vehicle’s certification label, owner’s manual, tow equipment, payload limit, and current local availability.

How the published range and price comparisons differ
Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking page presents the following ranges and starting prices. Its range figures are estimates as described by that page; they are not results from one controlled test under identical conditions. Starting prices are page listings, not verified transaction prices, and can change with trim, location, incentives, and availability.

|---|---|---|---|
| Rivian R1T | Not stated in the cited ranking summary | Not stated in the cited ranking summary | Ranked 10/10 and named its favorite for packaging, utility, and performance. |
| 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV | 283–493 miles, estimated | $71,695 | Chevrolet’s model comparison gives a different, trim-specific maximum estimate; see below. |
| 2026 GMC Sierra EV | 283–410 miles, estimated | $64,995 | GMC’s trim comparison identifies the battery and configuration behind its range figures. |
| 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning | 240–320 miles, EPA-estimated | $52,375 | This listing is for model year 2025; check current inventory and pricing. |
| 2026 Tesla Cybertruck | 320–325 miles, estimated | $72,235 | Car and Driver gives it an 8.5/10 editorial rating. |
Car and Driver’s Silverado range span tops out at 493 miles, while Chevrolet’s 2026 comparison says 478 miles is the GM-estimated maximum for the Max Range LT or Max Range Trail Boss. These are figures from different pages and may refer to different configurations or updates; do not treat either as a promise of real-world or towing range. The GMC’s range listings likewise depend on trim and battery, rather than applying to every Sierra EV.
Which electric pickup can tow the most?
Among the specific manufacturer configurations listed here, Silverado EV LT and the Sierra EV Denali with available extended-range battery are each rated for a maximum of 12,500 pounds. That is a tie at the stated maximum, not proof that every version of either model can tow that much. For comparison, GMC lists materially different figures for other named configurations:
| Manufacturer-stated configuration | Range | Maximum towing | Maximum payload |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Silverado EV LT; Chevrolet comparison | 478 miles GM-estimated maximum for the Max Range LT or Max Range Trail Boss; Chevrolet lists the LT tow rating separately | 12,500 lb | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| 2026 Sierra EV Elevation, standard range; GMC comparison | 283 miles | 8,500 lb | 2,250 lb |
| 2026 Sierra EV Denali, available extended-range battery; GMC comparison | 410 miles | 12,500 lb | Not stated in the cited comparison |
The Silverado’s 478-mile estimate belongs to specified Max Range versions, while its 12,500-pound tow rating is stated for the LT. Do not assume that the range and tow figures describe the same configuration without confirming the build. GMC’s table makes the trim distinction explicit: the standard-range Elevation and extended-range Denali are not interchangeable specifications.
Maximum tow rating is only one limit. The loaded trailer, passengers, cargo, hitch load, and accessories all matter; the truck’s payload capacity can be reached before its maximum tow rating. Confirm the actual vehicle’s door-jamb payload label and manufacturer limits, and account for the trailer’s loaded—not empty—weight.

A trim-to-trim comparison, not a whole-lineup verdict
GMC compares a 2025 Rivian R1T Dual Standard with a 2026 Sierra EV Elevation standard range. Its figures show how two specific builds compare, but this is a manufacturer-authored comparison rather than an independent assessment of entire model lines.

How much range do electric trucks lose while towing?
There is no dependable single percentage for every electric truck and trailer. Range changes with trailer weight and shape, speed, terrain, weather, elevation, and the truck’s configuration. A boxy travel trailer at highway speed presents a different load from a small, low-profile utility trailer, even if the weights are similar.
The Associated Press, reporting Edmunds guidance, described an example in which towing used about 27% more electricity and reduced maximum range by 27%. That is an example, not a rule for all vehicles or trips. Older tests summarized in a Virginia transportation report illustrate how large the difference can be under particular conditions:
- In one Car and Driver test, an R1T towing a 5,650-pound trailer had estimated range fall from about 220 miles at 75 mph unloaded to 103 miles while towing.
- In a separate Car and Driver comparison towing a 6,100-pound camper at approximately 70 mph, the reported ranges were about 140 miles for a GMC Hummer EV, 100 miles for a Ford Lightning, and 110 miles for a Rivian R1T.
Those are specific older tests with different vehicles, equipment, and conditions—not a controlled, current comparison of 2026 pickups. They are useful warnings against planning a towing trip around the unloaded advertised range, but they do not predict your exact trip.

Can you tow a camper with an electric pickup?
Yes, provided the specific truck and hitch setup are rated for the camper’s loaded weight and hitch load, and you plan the trip around reduced range and charging access. The difficult part of a long journey may be less the truck’s tow rating than finding charging stops that can accommodate a vehicle with a trailer attached.
A Virginia transportation report notes that many charging stations use parking-style spaces rather than trailer-friendly pull-through layouts. Before setting out, plan around the loaded trailer, realistic road speed, route, terrain, and charging stops. Check whether you can reach, use, and leave each charger with the entire truck-and-trailer combination; otherwise, you may need to unhitch or choose another stop.
- Confirm the match: check the truck’s exact trim and equipment ratings against the camper’s loaded weight, tongue weight, and your passengers and cargo.
- Plan conservatively: use a towing-range estimate appropriate to your vehicle and trailer, and leave a buffer for weather, elevation, speed, and detours.
- Check station access: verify that the charging site works for a truck and trailer, not just a passenger car. Do not assume a map pin means a pull-through space is available.
- Make a fallback plan: identify another compatible stop in case a charger is blocked, unavailable, or unsuitable for the trailer.
Which trucks make hauling bulky cargo easier?
Bed length alone does not tell the whole story for long cargo. Chevrolet offers an available Silverado EV Multi-Flex Midgate that opens a pass-through between the bed and cab; Chevrolet says the load floor can extend to accommodate items up to 10 feet 10 inches long. The benefit depends on the equipment and configuration, and using the pass-through changes the rear-cabin setup.
GMC describes an available Sierra EV MultiPro Midgate that can extend the load area when the rear seats are folded and the back glass is removed. The Sierra EV also has a lockable, weatherproof front eTrunk, according to GMC. Those features can help with bulky or weather-sensitive gear, but confirm what is included on the exact trim and what setup is needed before counting on them.

For ordinary daily hauling, check bed access, storage, visibility, and how often you need the rear seats. A clever cargo pass-through is useful for occasional long items; it does not replace checking whether the truck’s everyday bed and cabin layout suit your routine.
How to choose one for daily driving
Start with your actual workload, not the biggest number in a brochure. If you tow only occasionally, a truck that is easier to charge and park may be a better fit than one selected solely for its maximum rating. If you tow often, prioritize the exact towing configuration, route charging, payload headroom, and trailer access at stops.
- Range and charging: compare the specific trim’s published range with your normal daily distance, then consider whether home charging is practical and how often longer trips require public charging.
- Size and maneuverability: assess the truck in your own driveway, garage, workplace parking, and usual streets. Published tow capacity says nothing about turning or parking convenience.
- Cab, bed, and storage: decide whether you need rear-seat space, a conventional open bed, a midgate for long cargo, or secure front storage.
- Comfort and visibility: sit in the exact trim and assess seating, sightlines, controls, and access. The available comparisons do not establish a universal comfort or maneuverability winner.
- Support and ownership: check service access in your area, charging options on your regular routes, and the equipment included with the trim.
- Price and availability: verify the current local build, dealer price, delivery timing, and applicable incentives. The cited starting prices are not comparable transaction quotes, and inventory can change.
For the Ford, treat the listed range and price as a 2025-model-year reference and check whether that model year is available locally. Before relying on any tax credit or incentive, verify current rules for your transaction and location; GMC’s comparison page says the federal clean-vehicle tax credit expired September 30, 2025, but that statement does not determine eligibility for every buyer or other incentive.
What the published comparisons cannot settle
The cited material does not provide a current, controlled independent towing-range test covering all the 2026 pickups, nor comparable current transaction prices or local inventory. Manufacturer comparison pages are useful for named trim specifications, but they are not neutral whole-lineup tests. Treat editorial rankings as reviewers’ judgments and manufacturer estimates as configuration-specific claims; neither replaces checking the exact truck and route that matter to you.
