Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a large CPU-encoded YouTube playlist, start with FFmpeg’s libx264 encoder and -preset faster, then benchmark a representative clip before committing the whole queue. It is a practical throughput-oriented starting point—not a universal optimum or a YouTube requirement. Your best choice depends on the CPU, footage, output settings, and deadline.
Choose a preset for your deadline, not by name alone
x264 presets trade encoding speed for compression efficiency. Faster presets generally take less processing time; slower ones can produce smaller files at a comparable constant-quality setting, but require more time. That tradeoff compounds across a large queue.

The documented x264 sequence, from fastest to slowest, is ultrafast, superfast, veryfast, faster, fast, medium, slow, slower, and placebo. medium is the default. For a queue where CPU throughput matters, try faster first. Compare veryfast if turnaround is tight, or fast and medium if you have time to pursue compression efficiency. placebo is not a practical queue recommendation: its extreme processing cost works against throughput. FFmpeg’s libx264 documentation describes the preset option; the x264 reference lists the preset sequence.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset faster -crf 20 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -movflags +faststart output.mp4
This is an example, not a tested universal recipe. The 20 CRF value is illustrative, not a YouTube recommendation. Adjust CRF to balance visual quality and file size. If you have a required bitrate or file-size target, use an appropriate bitrate-based workflow instead. Preset and CRF are separate controls: the preset changes encoder configuration, while CRF selects constant-quality mode. FFmpeg’s documentation describes the preset option as: “Set the encoding preset (cf. x264 –fullhelp).” FFmpeg libx264 options documents these encoder controls.
Keep the source frame rate unless there is a specific reason to change it, and inspect the output before uploading. If the source is not progressive SDR, do not assume the sample command’s scan, pixel format, or rate-control choices are suitable without checking the footage and intended delivery profile.

Benchmark a representative clip before encoding the playlist
- Choose a representative source. Use a clip with the resolution, frame rate, motion, detail, and noise or grain found in the playlist. A simple scene alone may understate the time or compression behavior of harder material.
- Hold the other settings constant. Compare presets using the same source, FFmpeg build, codec, CRF, frame rate, and other encoding options. Test
fasteragainstveryfastfor more speed, or againstfastormediumif the schedule permits. - Record elapsed time and output size. Compare how long each encode takes and the resulting file size at the same CRF.
- Inspect difficult scenes. Check motion, fine detail, and noise or grain for visible differences. Choose the preset that meets the time budget and acceptable visual and file-size goals.
- Estimate the queue cautiously. Use the representative clip’s measured encoding time and the playlist’s durations as a planning guide, allowing for content differences and concurrent workload. Do not assume a fixed encode duration from preset name alone.
There is no machine-independent encoding-time estimate: results depend on the processor, FFmpeg and x264 build, source complexity and resolution, and what else is running. No hardware benchmark establishes a universal playlist speed or a CPU upgrade requirement.
Match YouTube’s upload guidance to the actual source
YouTube does not prescribe an x264 preset. Its upload guidance recommends characteristics including MP4, H.264, progressive scan, High Profile, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, variable bitrate, CABAC, two consecutive B frames, and a closed GOP with a GOP length of half the frame rate. It also recommends matching the upload frame rate to the recorded frame rate. These are YouTube Help recommendations, not a requirement that every uploader re-encode to those exact settings. YouTube Help: recommended upload encoding settings states: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”

YouTube Help’s SDR bitrate figures below are recommendations, not a required bitrate ceiling or a guaranteed quality result. The page shows no publication year; figures are attributed to YouTube Help, accessed 2026. Do not apply the SDR table to HDR footage.
| Resolution and frame-rate band | YouTube Help SDR recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p, standard frame rate (24, 25, or 30 fps) | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, high frame rate (48, 50, or 60 fps) | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, standard frame rate | 35–45 Mbps |
| 2160p/4K, high frame rate | 53–68 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026. YouTube says there is no required bitrate limit; the page distinguishes SDR from HDR. Select guidance for the source resolution, frame-rate band, and SDR or HDR category rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every upload. What to do when the queue is too slow or files are too large
- The queue is missing its deadline: test
veryfastagainstfasteron the representative clip, keeping other settings fixed. Use the measured time to determine whether the speed gain is worth any change in output size or appearance. - Files are larger than you want: compare a slower preset at the same CRF and inspect the resulting size and difficult scenes. A slower preset may improve compression efficiency, but takes more CPU time; decide whether the file-size change justifies the additional batch time.
- Quality looks wrong: inspect representative scenes and review CRF, source quality, and output settings. Preset choice alone does not specify a visual-quality target.
- The output does not match the intended upload: check resolution, pixel format, scan type, and frame rate against the actual source and delivery profile. Preserve the recorded frame rate unless you intentionally need a conversion.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on a YouTube channel around the clock, that is a different task from preparing an encoded playlist. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos; it does not encode a local playlist for you or stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops it from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.
There is one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details.
