If you must re-encode with FFmpeg’s software libx264 encoder and finishing quickly is the priority, start with -preset veryfast. Set quality separately with -crf, then test a representative sample before encoding the full playlist. The preset controls encoding speed; it does not guarantee a particular image quality or file size. If your clips are already compatible, joining them without re-encoding may save far more time.
Which FFmpeg preset should you use?
For a speed-first libx264 encode, begin with -preset veryfast. Compare it with fast or medium if a sample shows that the faster setting produces a quality or file-size trade-off you do not want. There is no universally best preset: the right choice depends on the source, encoder, hardware, and how much time you can spend encoding.

In practical terms, a faster preset spends less effort on compression, while a slower preset can spend more time finding efficient ways to represent the video. Your actual encode time and output should be checked on your own material; there is no benchmark that predicts them for every playlist and computer.

Choose the workflow before encoding
Use stream copy when compatible clips can be joined as-is
If the clips have compatible streams and formats, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join them without decoding and re-encoding the video. This can avoid the main encoding cost altogether. Consult FFmpeg’s concat FAQ for the demuxer method and its input requirements. Do not assume arbitrary clips can be copied together: mismatched codecs, stream layouts, or other format differences may prevent a clean join.

Re-encode when filtering or incompatibility requires it
If you need filters or the input streams cannot be concatenated directly, use the concat filter workflow and encode the result. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes this from the concat demuxer and recommends the filter operation when re-encoding is needed. A filter-based join is not a shortcut around encoding: it processes the media and requires an output encode.
Set speed and quality separately
Start with a sample, not the whole playlist
- Choose a short section that represents the playlist, including the motion, detail, gradients, and text or graphics that matter in your videos.
- Encode that section with
libx264,-preset veryfast, and a chosen-crfvalue. - Inspect the result at the intended viewing size. Check for visible artifacts and confirm that detail and motion remain acceptable.
- Compare
veryfastwithfastormediumusing the same sample and quality target. Note elapsed time, visual quality, and file size. - Use the setting that meets your quality and time needs, then apply it to the complete encode.
Choose CRF by validating the output
CRF is a constant-quality mode control supported by x264; it is separate from the preset. A CRF value is not a promise of a fixed bitrate or file size, and a single universal value cannot account for every source. Try values on representative footage and select based on the actual output. If you change CRF, compare the resulting quality and size rather than assuming a preset change will preserve either.

For a large playlist, a small sample is useful because content varies: a static scene and fast motion can behave differently under the same settings. If clips differ substantially, test more than one representative segment before committing to the full encode.
Match the output to YouTube’s upload recommendations
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, stereo or supported multichannel audio, and a 48 kHz audio sample rate. YouTube also recommends matching the frame rate of the recording. These are upload recommendations, not a mandate to use one FFmpeg preset.

These figures are YouTube recommendations; the help page consulted does not state a publication year. They are not proof that every upload must be encoded at those rates. The page provides separate targets by resolution and frame-rate class, so identify your intended output before using a bitrate target. CRF and a bitrate-target workflow are different approaches: do not treat a CRF encode as guaranteed to land on one of the listed bitrates.
Common problems and fixes
- The encode still takes too long: first check whether the clips can use the concat demuxer without re-encoding. If an encode is necessary, test a faster preset such as
veryfaston a representative sample and compare with the slower alternatives only if the result calls for it. - The output looks worse than expected: inspect the sample and adjust CRF based on visible quality, rather than changing the preset as if it were a quality setting.
- The output file is unexpectedly large or small: compare sample file sizes and quality. CRF does not specify a fixed bitrate, so content affects the result.
- Concatenation fails or produces a problematic join: verify that the inputs meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements. If filtering or incompatible streams mean a re-encode is required, use the concat filter workflow instead.
- You are unsure which target to encode for: confirm the intended resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s corresponding SDR recommendation as a reference—not as a substitute for checking quality.
