For a prerecorded MP4 with video and audio, this FFmpeg command loops the file indefinitely and sends it to YouTube Live over RTMPS:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Replace input.mp4 with your file and replace the sample destination with the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The 10 Mbps video target is a starting point for 1080p30 H.264, not a universal setting. In particular, -g 60 means a two-second keyframe interval only at 30 fps.

What the command does
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -1 means no set loop count. -re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the computer can process it. Both are input options, so they belong before -i. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Set the command for your ASMR file
Choose resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate
Keep the source’s native resolution and frame rate unless you have a reason to convert them. YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Its current H.264 encoder guidance lists these ingestion rates; they are targets, not guarantees of perceived quality:
| Output format | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 H.265/AV1 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
The figures are from YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The example’s 10 Mbps is a practical 1080p30 H.264 starting point within YouTube’s listed range, but it is below the recommended 14 Mbps figure. If you use 1080p60 H.264, 10 Mbps is also below YouTube’s 17 Mbps recommendation. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain reliably, and test it before relying on the broadcast.
Match the keyframe interval to the actual frame rate
YouTube recommends a keyframe every two seconds and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. FFmpeg’s -g and -keyint_min values are measured in frames: use approximately twice the frame rate for a two-second GOP. For example, use -g 60 -keyint_min 60 at 30 fps, or -g 50 -keyint_min 50 at 25 fps. The example’s -g 60 is not a two-second interval if your output is not 30 fps. Check the actual output frame rate rather than assuming it from the input.

Keep audio compatible
The example converts audio to AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s RTMP(S) guidance allows AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz in its advanced settings. This command does not explicitly set channel count; if you need to ensure stereo output, add -ac 2 to the audio options, for example: -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2.
Use an encoder and rate control your setup supports
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). In the example, -b:v and -maxrate share a target, while -bufsize 20M sets the rate-control buffer. Treat this as a practical approximation and confirm the behavior for your FFmpeg build and encoder. If libx264 is unavailable or too slow on the machine, use an available compatible encoder and verify that it can meet your bitrate and keyframe requirements. Hardware speed and quality depend on the specific machine and encoder; no performance result is implied here.
Prepare YouTube Live and start the stream
- Enable and prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and complete any channel eligibility or setup steps YouTube presents. Create or schedule the live stream and use the stream key and ingest address displayed for that stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share the full command. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Replace the placeholders. Change
input.mp4to the file path and replace the sample RTMPS URL with the exact address and key supplied by Live Control Room. Keep the key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. - Run FFmpeg. Paste the command into a terminal on a machine with FFmpeg installed and an available
libx264encoder. Keep that machine running and connected to the internet for the duration of this do-it-yourself stream. - Confirm the incoming stream. Check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream health before making the broadcast public or relying on it. Test beforehand with audio and video activity similar to the real stream, then monitor health and messages during the broadcast.
These steps use YouTube’s encoder setup and monitoring guidance. The command itself only loops and sends media; it does not supervise FFmpeg or guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

Check the loop boundary before a long broadcast
Repeating a file does not guarantee a perceptually seamless loop. Listen and watch across the end-to-start transition in the actual source. For ASMR, pay particular attention to a click, a sudden change in room tone or ambience, an abrupt image jump, timestamp problems, or a decode error. Adjust or edit the source if the transition is distracting. No particular file can be assumed to loop cleanly without checking it.

Know what happens when something fails
- FFmpeg exits or the computer sleeps:
-stream_loop -1repeats media but does not restart a crashed process or prevent sleep. Keep the computer awake and running; if continuous operation matters, add process supervision and monitor the ingest. - The network drops: This command does not provide automatic recovery from a connection outage. Check the upload connection and YouTube stream health; reconnect or restart FFmpeg if needed.
- YouTube shows no incoming signal: Check that FFmpeg is still running, the RTMPS address and stream key match Live Control Room, and the machine has a working outbound connection.
- The stream is unstable or YouTube reports health warnings: Test upload bitrate and reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot reliably sustain the chosen settings. Recheck the incoming stream in Live Control Room.
- The command reports an unknown encoder: The installed FFmpeg build may lack
libx264. Use a compatible encoder available in that build and configure its rate control and keyframes to meet YouTube’s requirements. - Playback stutters or the loop transition sounds wrong: Inspect the source and boundary, verify output frame rate and encoder load, and test again before a long broadcast. Looping does not repair a problematic file.
When another ingest method makes sense
RTMP(S) is the straightforward fit for this FFmpeg file-to-live command. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but that workflow requires M2TS segments, playlists, muxed audio/video, HTTPS, and specified codecs; it is not a drop-in replacement URL for the FLV/RTMPS command. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for its RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. H.264 is used here as a straightforward baseline. Before choosing another codec, confirm that your installed FFmpeg encoder and chosen ingest protocol support the combination, then consider sustainable bitrate, processing capability, and keyframe control.

Copyright and monetization are separate from the encoder
A technically valid stream does not establish that you have the rights to the video, music, or other audio in it. Make sure the material is yours or that you have the necessary permissions, and review YouTube’s current live and channel policies before broadcasting. Repeating a file does not itself establish eligibility for monetization; the encoder command cannot resolve rights or channel-policy questions.
