For a local prerecorded video or playlist, OBS Studio is the most direct FFmpeg alternative: use its looping Media Source for one file, or a looping VLC Video source for a playlist. For cloud-hosted scheduled repeats, Restream documents looping up to 10 times, with a 40-hour total stream cap. StreamNeo is the first option to consider if you want an always-on YouTube loop without leaving a computer running: it plays uploaded videos from the cloud, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Which FFmpeg alternative fits your loop?
The right choice depends on whether you need a single file or playlist, whether a computer can stay on, and whether the broadcast is a finite event or an ongoing channel. The options below are not interchangeable: some loop locally, some support bounded cloud events, and StreamNeo is for an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos.

| Option | Best fit | What it supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Always-on YouTube playback from uploaded videos | Cloud looping and playlists; any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. | YouTube only; it plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed. |
| OBS Studio | One local file or a local playlist | Media Source can loop one file; VLC Video can loop a playlist. | Your computer must stay on and send the stream. VLC must be installed for the VLC source. |
| Restream | Scheduled cloud prerecorded event | Paid looping for up to 10 repeats and a maximum 40-hour stream. | This is not documented as unlimited 24/7 playback; plan eligibility can change. |
| StreamYard | Prerecorded segments in a browser studio | Its current plan page lists two hours of prerecorded streams on Core and four hours on Advanced. | These time allowances do not establish unlimited playlist looping. |
| AJA HELO Plus | Scheduled prerecorded playback without a computer | YouTube describes its optional PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. | Specialized standalone hardware rather than a general-purpose software alternative. |
For 24/7 operation, StreamNeo is the first recommendation: it runs from the cloud, accepts uploaded video at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day. For hands-on local control, use OBS. For a finite event with repeats, Restream’s stated caps are the clearest fit among the documented browser/cloud options.
Use OBS to loop a local video or playlist
Loop one prerecorded file
- Install OBS Studio and open the scene you want to use.
- In Sources, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the video file. Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm the source preview shows the file.
- In OBS streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream details from YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start streaming in OBS, then check the YouTube Studio preview before making the stream public or starting the event.
Loop a playlist
- Install VLC media player before configuring OBS; the VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source from Sources.
- Add the files to the source playlist and enable playlist looping in its properties.
- Confirm the playlist plays in the OBS preview, configure YouTube stream details, and monitor playback after going live.
OBS is a local encoder workflow: the computer runs the source and sends the stream for the full broadcast. Sleep, shutdown, a network interruption, or an OBS crash can interrupt it, so disable sleep for the session and check the stream rather than assuming the loop is still live.

Set up YouTube Live before streaming
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Its live-stream eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current requirements if the live option is unavailable.
Bandwidth and stream health
- YouTube recommends upload bandwidth headroom of 20% above the total stream bitrate. If the encoded stream uses 6 Mbps, for example, aim for at least 7.2 Mbps of available upload capacity, with more margin if other devices share the connection.
- Test the setup before the event. Confirm the YouTube preview receives video and audio, then monitor stream health once live.
- Choose a resolution and bitrate your computer and connection can sustain consistently. A higher setting is not useful if it causes dropped frames or unstable delivery.
Long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer will be saved as one complete archive; download or preserve a separate source copy if the recording matters.

Cloud and studio alternatives for finite prerecorded events
Restream
Restream’s help documentation describes paid looping of prerecorded video, with up to 10 repeats and a maximum stream length of 40 hours. This can suit a scheduled, bounded event when the required repeat count and total duration fit those limits. It is not evidence of an unlimited continuous loop. Confirm current plan requirements and feature availability on Restream before relying on it.

StreamYard’s plan page lists prerecorded-stream allowances of two hours on Core and four hours on Advanced. These are useful reference points for finite segments in a browser studio, but do not show that either plan supports an unlimited playlist loop. Plan details can change, so verify the current allowance before scheduling.

AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s encoder guidance describes AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as an optional way to schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized hardware route, not the straightforward software replacement most users need. Check the manufacturer’s current capabilities and availability before purchasing.
Copyright, reused content, and live labeling
Looping a video through an encoder does not change who owns the video or music in it. Use material you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream, and follow YouTube’s current copyright and platform policies. Calling a prerecorded feed “live” does not grant rights or remove policy obligations. Whether a particular stream qualifies for monetization depends on YouTube’s applicable policies and the content itself; the looping tools alone cannot establish that.

Troubleshooting a prerecorded YouTube Live loop
- The video does not repeat in OBS: reopen the Media Source properties and check Loop. For a playlist, use VLC Video and verify playlist looping is enabled.
- VLC Video is missing: install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source list again.
- YouTube receives no stream: verify the stream URL and key in OBS against YouTube Studio, confirm the key belongs to the intended channel, and check that the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements.
- Playback stutters or YouTube reports connection problems: reduce the stream bitrate or output resolution, check for competing uploads on the connection, and ensure available upload speed exceeds the bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The stream stops when you leave: OBS depends on the local computer and its connection. Prevent sleep and keep OBS running, or choose a cloud workflow designed for playback without a home computer.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; do not count on one complete archive for longer broadcasts.
- A planned cloud loop exceeds the allowed duration: Restream documents a 40-hour maximum and 10 repeats. Break the event into suitable scheduled parts or use a solution intended for continuous playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or pricing. Start your free first day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep the same YouTube stream key for future broadcasts?
YouTube Studio provides encoder stream details, but whether a key is persistent depends on the key and workflow you select there. Treat every key as a secret and confirm the selected key before each broadcast.
