For a speaker close to a stationary phone, consider a compact directional mic; for a presenter who moves or an interview, a wireless kit is usually the more suitable setup. If you already own a wired microphone, check the required interface and adapters before buying anything else.
Choose a microphone setup for the recording
| Recording need | Setup to consider | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking to camera with the phone nearby | Compact, phone-mounted directional microphone | Phone port, exact model suffix, mic direction, wind protection, case clearance and camera framing. |
| Interviewing or presenting while moving | Wireless transmitter and phone receiver | One or two transmitters, receiver connector or adapter, mounting, monitoring and app behavior. |
| Using a microphone you already own | Wired mic plus a compatible interface or adapters | TRS versus TRRS cabling, Lightning or USB-C input, headphone monitoring and app/device compatibility. |
| Recording two people | Two-transmitter wireless kit or two-input interface | Whether both voices are captured as intended and the recording app supports the channel arrangement you need. |
| Moving between a phone and other cameras | Receiver-based wireless system or adaptable mic/interface | Included cables and phone adapter, camera output, mounting, and which accessories are sold separately. |
These are setup categories, not a tested product ranking. Confirm recording modes and app behavior in the current product instructions for your exact phone and microphone.

Wireless microphones for interviews and moving speakers
DJI Mic 2: choose the transmitter count to match the speakers
DJI describes a one-transmitter/one-receiver set for a single creator and a two-transmitter/one-receiver kit for two-person recording. Its phone adapters for USB-C and Lightning output digital signals. Kit contents vary, so check the listing and instructions for the specific set rather than assuming every package includes the same phone adapter or accessories. See DJI’s Mic 2 support information for configuration and compatibility details.
DJI lists 8 GB of transmitter storage and up to 14 hours of 24-bit or 11 hours of 32-bit internal audio recording. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. DJI also lists a maximum transmission distance of 250 m under FCC conditions and 160 m under CE conditions, both in unobstructed, interference-free settings; those ideal limits should not be treated as a typical working distance. The system supports up to two transmitters at once. DJI says a direct Bluetooth phone connection disables intelligent noise cancelling and internal recording, so check the connection method against the features you need.

RØDE Wireless Micro: identify the correct receiver version
RØDE documents separate USB-C and Lightning receiver versions. The USB-C version is intended for compatible USB-C devices; the Lightning version is for Lightning iOS devices such as iPhone 14 and earlier. The receiver plugs into the phone’s charging port, but a thick or rugged case may prevent it from fitting properly. Check case clearance as well as port compatibility before purchasing.
RØDE also describes a Direct Connect option through its Capture app that does not require plugging in the receiver. Do not assume this app-based route behaves the same way in Apple’s Camera app or every other video app; follow RØDE’s current instructions for the app you plan to use. See RØDE’s Wireless Micro setup guide.

RØDE VideoMic Me-C+: USB-C iPhones
The Me-C+ is a compact option when the speaker is close to the phone and the mic can be pointed toward them. RØDE says it is designed for full compatibility with USB-C iOS and Android devices, including iPhone 15. In its article updated December 5, 2025, RØDE support states: “The VideoMic Me-C+ is made and designed to be fully compatible with iOS devices (as well as Android devices) with USB-C ports, such as the iPhone 15.” RØDE also warns that the original VideoMic Me-C is not compatible with iOS, so the similar model names are not interchangeable. See RØDE’s compatibility explanation.
The Lightning VideoMic Me-L is not natively compatible with iPhone 15 or iPhone 16; in an article updated July 17, 2026, RØDE recommends the Me-C+ for those USB-C generations. Check the exact mic suffix and the connector on your own iPhone rather than relying on a product family name. Before recording, confirm wind protection, whether a case obstructs the microphone, and whether its physical position interferes with the camera view. A phone-mounted mic does not let the speaker move away from the phone in the way a wireless transmitter does. See RØDE’s Me-L guidance for iPhone 15 and 16.

Connect an existing wired microphone and monitor the sound
A microphone with a 3.5 mm plug may need more than a simple phone adapter. RØDE distinguishes camera microphone cabling from smartphone cabling: depending on the mic and input, a camera mic may require a TRS-to-TRRS cable or adapter, followed by an appropriate Apple Lightning or USB-C audio input adapter. Check the microphone’s output, the phone’s port, and the adapter’s supported use together. Some Lightning microphone setups require MFi-certified cables, while certain models need a camera adapter; a passive adapter should not be assumed to work in every configuration.
RØDE’s AI-Micro is a two-input mobile interface with headphone output and USB connectivity for Lightning and USB-C devices. Its headphone monitoring can help reveal a muted or poorly leveled signal before you finish a long take. Confirm the interface, cable and recording app support the specific device and channel arrangement you intend to use. RØDE’s overview of connecting an external microphone to a smartphone covers directional mics, wireless setups, interfaces, adapters and monitoring.

Bundled mobile rigs: Shure MV88+ Video Kit
Shure presents the MV88+ Video Kit as a mobile recording setup, with Apple-device connection and phone-charging arrangements that depend on the adapter or cable used. It may suit someone who values a bundled mobile rig, but the product page alone does not establish that every MV88+ configuration connects directly to every current iPhone. Verify your iPhone generation, the cable and adapter included in the specific kit, and current software support before choosing it. See Shure’s MV88+ Video Kit page.
Check compatibility before you record
- Identify the iPhone port. Confirm whether your phone uses USB-C or Lightning. Do not infer compatibility from a similar microphone model name.
- Match the exact microphone or receiver version. Check the full product name and suffix, plus any required phone adapter or cable.
- Check the recording arrangement. Decide whether you need one or two transmitters, a direct-mounted mic, or multiple wired inputs. Verify that the app supports the channel arrangement you want.
- Test the physical fit. Check phone-case clearance, camera framing, mounting, wind protection and access to any required charging connection.
- Check the signal before a long take. If your setup supports headphone monitoring, listen for a muted, weak or poorly leveled signal before recording the full video.
Manufacturer compatibility statements establish the configurations those companies document; they do not prove that every adapter, app, case or recording mode will work alike.
