For a life-sciences or pharma contract manufacturing organization (CMO/CDMO) with complex supplier relationships, there is no defensible universal eQMS winner among these six options. Qualio, MasterControl, Veeva, and ZenQMS have the clearest direct CMO/CDMO positioning in their published materials; Octave Reliance is a broader enterprise option, while Greenlight Guru is a conditional fit for medical-device manufacturing. Treat vendor descriptions as claims to verify in a workflow demo—not proof that a product fits your sites, sponsors, or quality processes.
Here, “CMO” means a life-sciences or pharma contract manufacturer. A medical-device CMO should validate its own regulatory, product, and operational requirements before considering the medtech-focused option.

What should a supplier-heavy CMO look for in an eQMS?
The key question is whether supplier records connect to the quality work they affect. A vendor directory alone does not establish a supplier-quality workflow. Evaluate whether the system can link qualification and approved-supplier status to risk-tiered documentation, audits, supplier changes, deviations, corrective action or supplier corrective action requests (SCARs), and evidence tied to the relevant product, batch, or quality event.
For contract manufacturing, that supplier lifecycle is only part of the fit. The system also has to support collaboration with sponsors or clients, governance across sites, and the connection between quality records and manufacturing execution. Do not assume that a QMS includes electronic batch records (EBR) or a manufacturing execution system (MES): ask what is included, what requires a separate module, and how records connect.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Client collaboration: Check for role-based external access, sponsor approvals, quality-agreement workflows, and controlled sharing of investigations, audit findings, and CAPA records. Confirm that each client can see only authorized records.
- Supplier controls: Trace qualification, documentation, risk, audits, changes, deviations, CAPA/SCAR, and follow-up evidence through the lifecycle.
- Multi-client and multi-site governance: Test how customer records are separated, site workflows are configured, and global reporting works without unnecessary duplication.
- Manufacturing connection: Demonstrate how deviations, production records, and release-related quality records connect to MES or EBR where those capabilities matter.
- System assurance: Review validation documentation, audit trails, electronic signatures, access controls, change management, and the division of responsibilities between your organization and the software provider.
- Implementation and cost: Scope migration, configuration, training, integrations, support, licensing, timeline, sites, and external users. Pricing and contract terms are not established by the published materials discussed here, so obtain a quote for your intended scope.
These are evaluation criteria, not claims that every candidate provides every capability in a standard package. Confirm the modules, configuration, and evidence available for your intended deployment directly with each vendor.
How do the six eQMS options differ?
| Option | Published fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Qualio | Contract-project traceability and client visibility for CROs and CMOs | Workflow details, client access boundaries, and fit for your sponsor processes |
| MasterControl | Quality, supplier controls, and manufacturing for life-sciences contract manufacturing | Included modules and multi-client data boundaries |
| Veeva QMS / Quality Cloud | Life-sciences quality with external partner collaboration | Sector-specific product scope and the workflows available to your partners |
| ZenQMS | Configurable eQMS positioned for CMOs/CDMOs, with a vendor-reported multi-site customer story | Deployment scope, reference details, and fit for your sites |
| Octave Reliance | Broader enterprise supplier-quality and integration requirements | Sponsor portal and CMO workflows; the reviewed product material does not establish these |
| Greenlight Guru | Supplier controls for a medical-device CMO | Whether its medical-device focus fits your product and regulatory needs |
Which options have the clearest CMO/CDMO fit?
Qualio: contract-project traceability and sponsor visibility
Qualio explicitly markets its QMS to CROs and CMOs and describes end-to-end traceability for contract projects, third-party visibility, and client access to monitor CMO/CRO work. Those claims make it a natural candidate when sponsor collaboration and project traceability are priorities. In a demo, test whether external users can review the records they need, complete approvals, and remain restricted from other clients’ information. Qualio’s CRO and CMO overview describes the vendor’s positioning; it does not independently establish performance in your workflows.
MasterControl: quality, supplier controls, and manufacturing
MasterControl describes a life-sciences CMO/CDMO offering spanning Quality Excellence, Supplier Excellence, and Manufacturing Excellence. Its supplier-quality examples include supplier quality management (SQM), approved vendor lists, and SCARs. This makes it worth evaluating when you want supplier controls and manufacturing-related quality in the same broader suite. Ask which capabilities are included in the proposed modules and how the system separates records for different clients. MasterControl’s CMO page is specific to life-sciences contract manufacturing.

Veeva QMS / Quality Cloud: external partner collaboration
Veeva describes supplier quality and real-time external-partner collaboration for investigations, audit findings, corrective actions, and supplier change control. Its materials also cover contract services and identify contract manufacturers in its medtech QMS positioning. Because product scope can differ by sector, have Veeva demonstrate the specific product and workflows proposed for your organization rather than assuming that a feature described for one sector applies to another. See Veeva QMS, Veeva’s medtech quality-management page, and Veeva’s contract-services materials.
Veeva’s contract-services page hosts a customer testimonial from Tom Sellig, CEO of Adare Pharma Solutions, describing the company’s use of Quality Cloud to harmonize quality systems and streamline processes. This is a customer statement published by the vendor, not an independent evaluation or a guarantee of comparable results for another CMO.
ZenQMS: a CMO/CDMO-focused configurable candidate
ZenQMS markets directly to contract manufacturing organizations and describes its platform as configurable. Its TriRx customer story reports a rollout across 11+ manufacturing sites; that figure is vendor-reported, and the page does not establish the exact deployment scope. Ask for a reference, clarify what was implemented at those sites, and compare the reference’s operating model with your own. Start with ZenQMS’s CMO/CDMO overview and the TriRx customer story.
When might a broader or sector-specific platform make sense?
Octave Reliance: broader enterprise supplier quality and integrations
Octave describes Reliance as a suite with more than 40 ready-to-use applications, including supplier quality, and lists integrations with ERP, PLM, CRM, MES, and other systems. The application count is a vendor-reported measure of suite breadth, not a performance result. The reviewed materials do not establish sponsor portals or specific CMO workflows, so make both explicit demo gates if they are important to your operation. See Octave Reliance.
Greenlight Guru: conditional option for medical-device manufacturing
Greenlight Guru describes supplier-management capabilities including risk classification, supplier documentation, expiry and audit reminders, and links between supplier records and quality events. Its positioning is medical-device focused, making it a conditional option for a medical-device CMO rather than a default pharma CMO shortlist choice. Confirm how its capabilities match your device products and operating needs using its supplier-management overview and medical-device QMS overview.

Use the same realistic scenario with every vendor. A consistent walkthrough will reveal workflow gaps that a feature list or broad product presentation can conceal. Ask the vendor to show the records and permissions as each event moves through the system:
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Create or review a supplier qualification, including the evidence needed to support approved-supplier status.
- Show how the system flags an expiring supplier certificate, assigns follow-up, and retains the resulting evidence.
- Record a supplier change and trace its review and impact to the relevant product, batch, or quality event.
- Log an audit finding and show how it progresses into an investigation and corrective action or SCAR.
- Open the resulting records in a sponsor view. Demonstrate which investigation, audit, or CAPA/SCAR information the sponsor can access and confirm that records belonging to another client are not visible.
- Run a site-level report, then show how the same information supports global oversight without duplicating work unnecessarily.
- If manufacturing traceability is in scope, show how the quality records connect to MES or EBR and clarify which components are included in the proposed package.
Use the walkthrough to test more than the happy path: ask who can approve, change, and close each record; how audit trails and electronic signatures are presented; how configurable site workflows behave; and what validation materials and implementation responsibilities are available. Then scope migration, training, integrations, support, licensing, and external-user access against the sites and sponsor relationships you actually plan to include.
How to narrow the shortlist
Start with the operating need, not a universal ranking. If sponsor visibility and contract-project traceability are central, prioritize a detailed Qualio demo. If you want to assess supplier controls alongside manufacturing capabilities, examine MasterControl’s proposed modules. If external partner collaboration is central, test Veeva’s sector-specific workflows. Include ZenQMS when its CMO/CDMO positioning and configurable approach match your intended rollout. Consider Octave Reliance when broader supplier-quality and system integrations lead the requirements, but require a clear CMO and sponsor-workflow demonstration. Keep Greenlight Guru on the list only when the context is medical-device manufacturing.

Vendor materials establish intended positioning and described capabilities, not a comparative winner. The strongest fit is the system that demonstrates your supplier lifecycle, client boundaries, site governance, manufacturing connections, and assurance requirements in the scope and commercial terms your organization can support.
