RetroDECK is the closest EmuDeck alternative if you want a ready-to-use Linux bundle. It combines a frontend and emulation components in a self-contained Flatpak, with optional tools for configuration. Choose ES-DE instead if you want a customizable game-library frontend and are willing to install and configure emulators separately. The key difference is that EmuDeck automates setup for separate emulator applications; it is not itself a bundled emulation environment.
How the three options differ
| Option | What it provides | Who handles emulator setup? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| RetroDECK | A bundled Linux environment with a frontend and emulation-related components in one Flatpak. | It supplies preconfigured defaults and offers a Configurator and manual tuning. | Steam Deck or Linux users who want an integrated starting point. |
| ES-DE | A frontend for browsing and launching a multi-system game collection. | You install and configure emulators separately; ES-DE does not manage their configuration. | Users who want to choose and configure their own emulators and frontend setup. |
| EmuDeck | An installer script that sets up official emulator options, common folders and settings. | EmuDeck automates parts of setup, while the emulator applications remain separate. | Users who want guided setup without adopting a single bundled environment. |
These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable packages. EmuDeck’s help documentation describes it as an installation script and says, “It is not an all in one solution like some other software.” EmuDeck Help

RetroDECK: the closest alternative for a bundled setup
RetroDECK describes itself as an all-in-one retro-gaming platform for Linux, including handhelds such as Steam Deck and Linux desktop or HTPC systems. It is distributed as a self-contained Flatpak and brings together an ES-DE-based frontend with emulators and related components. Examples named by the project include Azahar, PPSSPP, UZDoom, OpenBOR, RetroArch, MAME, PortMaster, Steam ROM Manager and Flips. These are examples, not a promise that every component is present in every build or appropriate for every device.
What makes it easier
RetroDECK’s appeal is that the frontend and components arrive as one integrated environment with preconfigured defaults. Its Configurator provides tools for BIOS validation, file management, presets and component tuning, and the project describes Steam library integration. That gives users options to adjust the setup without turning the initial experience into a separate frontend-and-emulator assembly project.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
RetroDECK does not mean you receive game files or BIOS files. EmuDeck’s documentation says users must provide their own ROMs and BIOS files; check the applicable laws where you live before creating or using game files.
Platform and control caveat
RetroDECK documents support for x86_64 Linux, including regular Linux desktops. Its advanced hotkey functionality depends on Steam Input for full support, so desktop users should verify how their distribution and controller setup behave. The project also describes built-in Steam ROM Manager integration and Steam Input layouts; consult its current setup guidance for the exact workflow.

ES-DE: choose it when the frontend is the priority
ES-DE is a frontend for browsing and launching a multi-platform collection, not a complete emulator setup suite. Its project site advertises support for over 150 game systems, controller navigation, game-information and media scraping, and themes. Linux downloads include x64 and AArch64 AppImages, as well as a Steam Deck-specific AppImage. The site listed version 3.5.0, released September 30, 2026, when accessed October 3, 2026; check the project site for the current release.

ES-DE’s FAQ says, “ES-DE acts strictly as a frontend, it does not interfere with the emulator configuration.” The projects are separate but collaborate: RetroDECK bundles ES-DE with emulators in its Flatpak, while an ES-DE-only setup leaves emulator installation and configuration to you. ES-DE FAQ
