Best EC2 Alternatives for Streaming a YouTube Playlist with FFmpeg

Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean Droplets are direct VM alternatives for managing your own FFmpeg playlist encoder. Google Cloud Live Stream API is a managed pipeline, while StreamNeo offers a separate cloud option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean Droplets are the most directly supported EC2 alternatives in the available documentation for running your own persistent FFmpeg process. Both are self-managed virtual machines: you install and maintain the software, keep the process running, and send its output to YouTube Live. Google Cloud Live Stream API is a different, managed-transcoding architecture—not a VM you can use as a drop-in replacement. If you do not need to manage FFmpeg or a server, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

Choose the right kind of alternative first

“EC2 alternative” can mean either another provider’s virtual machine or a service that takes over part of the streaming workflow. Those are different choices. A VM gives you a machine on which you can run FFmpeg yourself; a managed streaming service accepts a stream and processes or delivers it according to its own supported workflow. The latter does not necessarily run your custom FFmpeg playlist process.

  • For your own FFmpeg command and playlist: compare self-managed VMs first. Google Compute Engine and DigitalOcean Droplets are documented examples.
  • For managed transcoding and packaged delivery: investigate Google Cloud Live Stream API, but confirm that its input and output model fits your planned YouTube workflow.
  • To loop uploaded videos without maintaining a VM: StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only service; it plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera or acting as an FFmpeg VM.

EC2 alternatives for running FFmpeg yourself

Option What it is Fit for a YouTube playlist encoder What to verify
Google Compute Engine Self-managed IaaS virtual machines with Linux and Windows options, according to Google Cloud’s Compute Engine product page. A direct category alternative if you want to provision a VM, install FFmpeg, and manage a persistent process yourself. Choose an appropriate machine and region, then check current runtime, storage, and outbound-transfer pricing. The available source does not establish a cheapest configuration or comparative performance.
DigitalOcean Droplets Linux-based virtual machines, documented on DigitalOcean’s Compute page. A direct self-managed VM option. DigitalOcean also lists an SRS streaming-oriented Marketplace image that includes SRS and FFmpeg and documents restreaming and virtual live-streaming features. Verify the Marketplace image’s current contents and maintenance state before relying on it. Its listing was generated 13 March 2024 and names FFmpeg 4.2; that is a dated listing detail, not confirmation of a current FFmpeg installation.

These are category matches, not a proven ranking by price, performance, regional latency, or reliability. The cited materials do not provide a current like-for-like cost comparison for a continuously running encoder. Compare the actual VM configuration, region, runtime, storage, and outbound data charges using each provider’s current pricing before choosing.

What Google Cloud Live Stream API does—and does not replace

Google Cloud Live Stream API is a managed service rather than a general-purpose VM. Its documentation describes SRT or RTMP input, transcoding to HLS or DASH, and saving output in Cloud Storage. Google defines an encoder as “a program used to send input streams, such as `ffmpeg`.” In that architecture, FFmpeg can be an input sender; the API’s documented role is the managed processing and output pipeline, not providing a VM on which you administer a persistent playlist process.

Before adopting it for a YouTube destination, map the input protocol and resulting delivery format to the workflow you intend to use. The API overview documents HLS/DASH output, while YouTube’s separate DASH delivery guide describes YouTube-specific delivery requirements. A format or setting documented for a different destination should not be assumed to apply to YouTube.

How to run a playlist-to-YouTube workflow on a VM

The broad process is the same whichever self-managed VM provider you choose. Exact FFmpeg arguments depend on your playlist format, source media, desired output, and YouTube’s current ingest requirements; the sources here do not establish a safe universal command or bitrate. Configure and validate those details against YouTube’s current guidance rather than copying a command intended for another platform.

  1. Create a VM. Select a Linux or Windows instance, region, and configuration that can handle the media and continuous process you plan to run. Account for persistent runtime, storage, and outbound data in the cost decision.
  2. Install and verify FFmpeg. Use a supported installation method for the chosen operating system. Check the installed version and confirm it can read your playlist and media before connecting it to a live destination. Do not assume a Marketplace image still contains the version shown in an older listing.
  3. Prepare the playlist and media. Make sure every referenced file is accessible to the VM and that paths or playlist entries work from the process’s working directory. Decide how the process should handle end-of-list behavior and missing files; test with a short non-live run first.
  4. Configure YouTube Live ingest. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live event and obtain its stream key and ingest details. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not put it in a public script, repository, or log. Follow YouTube’s current encoder and delivery instructions for the selected ingest method.
  5. Start FFmpeg under a process supervisor. Use an operating-system service manager or another persistent process supervisor so the process is not tied to an interactive shell. Configure restart behavior and logs, then verify both that FFmpeg remains running and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
  6. Test the whole lifecycle. Observe playlist transitions, reconnect behavior, logs, and the YouTube event before relying on the setup for a long-running broadcast. Have a way to stop the process and rotate the stream key if it is exposed.

Keep YouTube requirements separate from VM settings

The cloud provider determines where your process runs; it does not determine YouTube’s ingest rules. YouTube’s DASH guide is destination-specific, and Amazon IVS’s FFmpeg instructions are for a different destination. AWS recommends a two-second keyframe interval for its IVS setup, but that is not a YouTube setting to copy without checking YouTube’s current guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, the available sources do not specify a universal YouTube bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, or FFmpeg command for every playlist. Use the current YouTube instructions for the exact ingest protocol and stream configuration you select. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and content policies for every item in the playlist; permission to broadcast the media is your responsibility, and a continuous stream does not make otherwise restricted material permissible.

Common problems and practical checks

  • YouTube receives no video: confirm the event is live and configured, the key and ingest details match it, and the FFmpeg process is still running. Check logs for connection and input errors.
  • The stream stops when you disconnect: the process may still be attached to an interactive shell. Run it under a persistent supervisor and test its restart behavior.
  • A playlist item fails: check the file path, VM permissions, playlist syntax, and whether the file is present and readable on the VM—not only on your computer.
  • The stream connects but YouTube rejects or mishandles delivery: check the selected ingest protocol and settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Do not substitute Amazon IVS settings just because they are documented for FFmpeg.
  • Unexpected cloud costs: review machine runtime, attached storage, and outbound transfer for the actual region and configuration. The available documentation does not support naming a cheapest provider for a continuous workload.
  • A Marketplace image differs from expectations: verify its maintained status and installed components before production use; the SRS listing’s FFmpeg 4.2 detail dates to a catalog generated 13 March 2024.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping on YouTube rather than manage your own FFmpeg VM, StreamNeo is a different, managed option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It supports whatever quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode or offer quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
