For recording local broadcast channels in the U.S., Tablo 4th Generation is the better fit if you want antenna TV streamed to compatible devices without a Tablo subscription. ZapperBox M1 is the alternative if you want a DVR connected directly to a TV by HDMI or need ATSC 3.0 compatibility. Both are over-the-air (OTA) recorders—not universal replacements for cable boxes, satellite DVRs, or paid streaming services.
Which set-top box should you choose?
Choose based on your signal source and how you watch, not the word “DVR” on the box. These products record television received through an antenna. You need usable local reception, and the number of tuners determines how many channels you can watch or record at the same time.

What these DVRs can record—and what they cannot
Both devices are designed for free, local over-the-air broadcasts picked up by an antenna. They are not established here as recorders for paid streaming services. Tablo explicitly says its 4th Generation device does not record cable or satellite channels and does not record subscription streaming services such as Netflix or Sling. If your shows arrive through a cable or satellite provider, check that provider’s DVR options rather than assuming an OTA box can capture them.

Reception is address-dependent: location, terrain, obstructions, antenna type, and placement affect which stations you can receive. A product’s channel count is not a guarantee that those channels are available at your home. Tablo’s homepage advertises 125+ free channels, including live, local, and streaming channels; that company figure is not a promise of 125 local broadcast stations at every address.
Tablo 4th Generation: best for app-based whole-home viewing
Tablo connects to an antenna and your home network, then streams live and recorded antenna TV to supported devices. Its product specifications list Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen, and LG webOS compatibility. Tablo says internet service, a Tablo device, an antenna, and a compatible smart device are required; device-only bundles do not include an antenna.

Tuner and storage choices
Tablo offers two- and four-tuner versions, which the company says can watch or record up to two or four channels at once. The 4th Generation product page lists 50+ hours of onboard HD storage and support for USB hard drives from 1–8 TB. The listed storage capacity and supported drive sizes are vendor specifications, not a guarantee of a particular number of recordings; actual recording time varies with content and settings.
Subscription and broadcast-standard limits
Tablo says no subscription is needed for its apps, features, or guide data. Its 4th Generation DVR supports ATSC 1.0, not ATSC 3.0. Tablo says ATSC 1.0 broadcasts will continue through at least June 2027; this is not a promise about what will happen after that date.

ZapperBox M1: best for HDMI connection and ATSC 3.0
The M1 is a dedicated DVR that connects to a TV through HDMI and supports whole-home playback. ZapperBox lists ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 support, 4K/HDR output, a grid guide, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, USB ports, and microSD, SSD, and HDD storage. Its dual tuner can watch or record up to two channels at once.
Storage and subscriptions
ZapperBox supports several storage types, but a hard drive needs its own power or a powered hub. The company says some DVR features require a subscription. Its FAQ, updated September 29, 2026, lists annual prices of $15 for single tuner, $30 for dual tuner, and $50 for quad tuner or whole-home subscription; listed monthly prices are $1.99, $3.99, and $5.99, respectively. The FAQ says new plans were expected around October 9, 2026, so those figures should not be treated as confirmed current terms. Check the live plan details before buying, especially if you need whole-home playback or DVR features.

ZapperBox describes its dual-tuner product as offering local TV “without a monthly subscription,” but the same product page says some DVR features require a subscription. Treat the no-monthly-subscription wording as applying to access to local programming, not as proof that every guide, recording, or whole-home feature is free.

Check your setup before buying
- Confirm the source. These are antenna-based OTA DVRs. They do not replace a cable or satellite DVR, and Tablo does not record those services or paid streaming.
- Check local reception. Identify which broadcast stations are receivable at your address and plan antenna placement accordingly. Do not rely on a generic range claim as a reception guarantee.
- Choose the viewing arrangement. Pick Tablo if you want network streaming to compatible devices. Pick ZapperBox if you prefer an HDMI-connected DVR, after checking stock and the plan needed for the features you want.
- Count simultaneous channels. Match the tuner count to how many different programs you may watch or record at once: Tablo has two- and four-tuner options; the cited ZapperBox M1 is dual tuner.
- Check the broadcast standard. Tablo 4th Generation is ATSC 1.0 only. ZapperBox supports ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0, but ATSC 3.0 availability varies by market.
- Budget for storage and service. Tablo lists onboard storage plus USB drive expansion. ZapperBox supports removable storage, with extra power needed for an HDD, and some features may require a plan.
Which one is the better fit?
- Choose Tablo if you want to watch antenna TV on compatible smart TVs or streaming devices, want a choice of two or four tuners, and prefer no recurring Tablo subscription for apps, features, or guide data. Do not choose it for ATSC 3.0 or recording cable, satellite, or paid streaming.
- Consider ZapperBox M1 if HDMI connection and ATSC 3.0 support matter more, and you are comfortable checking current availability, storage requirements, and subscription terms for your intended features.
- Choose neither as a cable-box replacement if the programs you want to record come from a cable or satellite service. The evidence here does not establish the best current cable or satellite DVR.
