For most groups, begin with Combined Status for better survival information, add Global Positions and/or Minimap HUD for navigation, use Geometric Placement to make base building predictable, and add ActionQueue Reborn if your group wants less repetitive clicking. Veteran players can layer in Uncompromising Mode; groups that routinely run out of inventory space may prefer Extra Equipment Slots.
Install the files in two separate stages: dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua downloads Workshop content when the server starts, while modoverrides.lua enables each mod and stores its settings. Every shard needs its own configuration, and players must subscribe to the same Workshop items on their own Steam accounts.

Recommended Don’t Starve Together server mods
There is no official, universal ranking of the “best” mods. The recommendations below reflect the mods repeatedly highlighted in 2026 roundups, with each choice matched to a specific problem it solves. Workshop compatibility can change, so test a proposed stack on a copy of your world before using it for a long-running community server.

| Mod | Best for | Why install it | Important requirement or caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combined Status | Survival information | Expands the HUD with useful status information that is otherwise easy to miss. | Highlighted as a must-have in a 2026 Switchblade Gaming list and also featured by Game Rant. Confirm the current Workshop build before deployment. |
| Global Positions | Co-op coordination | Keeps teammate icons visible on the map, reducing time spent searching for separated players. | Every client must run it; a player without it will not receive the mod’s map functionality. |
| Minimap HUD | At-a-glance navigation | Adds a minimap-style view so players can orient themselves without repeatedly opening the full map. | Listed among Game Rant’s standout mods. Check that its current release supports your game branch. |
| Geometric Placement | Base construction | Helps place structures in consistent geometric layouts instead of relying on repeated manual adjustment. | Recommended by Switchblade Gaming. Test placement around existing structures before enabling it in a mature base. |
| ActionQueue Reborn | Routine automation | Queues compatible actions, reducing repetitive clicks during gathering, crafting, and other common tasks. | Recommended by Switchblade Gaming. Review its options with your group because automation can change the intended difficulty. |
| Uncompromising Mode | Veteran challenge runs | Raises the difficulty for groups that already know the standard survival loop. | Aimed at experienced players. Do not add it to a first-time server unless everyone understands that the normal balance will change. |
| Extra Equipment Slots | Inventory pressure | Provides additional equipment capacity for groups that spend more time managing items than surviving. | Recommended by Switchblade Gaming. More slots can reduce an intentional scarcity mechanic, so agree on the change beforehand. |
What to install first
For a new group
Use Combined Status as the first addition. It improves information without changing the world-generation rules or adding a new progression system. If players frequently lose one another, add Global Positions, but make subscription mandatory for everyone joining the server.
For a building-focused world
Choose Geometric Placement after the information mods. It addresses a different problem: placing floors, walls, and other structures cleanly. Test it in a temporary world first, because a placement helper can feel different when applied to an established base.
For a convenience-oriented server
Combine ActionQueue Reborn with either Extra Equipment Slots or Minimap HUD, depending on the group’s frustration. Action queues reduce repetitive input; extra slots reduce trips back to storage; the minimap reduces navigation overhead. Adding all three at once makes it harder to identify which setting caused a compatibility problem.
For experienced players
Use Uncompromising Mode as a deliberate ruleset choice, not as a quality-of-life patch. Keep the rest of the stack small, explain the changed difficulty to every player, and maintain a backup of the unmodified world.
Wormhole Marks: popular, but verify it before use
Wormhole Marks appears in many “best mod” lists because marking wormhole locations is an obvious navigation benefit. It is also the item that deserves the most caution. Switchblade Gaming reported that it had not been updated since February 2016 and cited comments describing crashes and disconnects. A separate 2026 roundup placed it at number 10. Headlines have cited roughly 3.5 million subscribers, while another 2026 excerpt reported 3,516,918; those figures are subscriber counts shown by the publishers, not an independently verified measure of a current, working release.
Before adding it, open its Steam Workshop page and check the visible update date, recent comments, and reports from players using the same game version. If the page still shows the old update history or current users describe instability, leave it out. A reliable server without wormhole labels is preferable to a world that disconnects players or risks a corrupted save.
How server mods work
The download file: dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua
This file tells the dedicated server which Workshop items to download during startup. It belongs in the server installation’s mods folder. Each mod is declared with its Workshop ID as a quoted string:

ServerModSetup("350811795")
The number above is only a syntax example; replace it with the actual Workshop ID shown in the mod’s URL. To download an entire Workshop collection, use a collection declaration with that collection’s ID:
ServerModCollectionSetup("COLLECTION_ID")
Downloading does not enable a mod. This file controls acquisition; the shard configuration controls activation.
The enablement file: modoverrides.lua
Each shard has its own modoverrides.lua. A basic entry looks like this:
return {
["workshop-MOD_ID"] = {
enabled = true
}
}
The workshop- prefix is required in the override table even though the download declaration uses only the numeric Workshop ID. A mod present in the server’s mods directory but absent from this table remains disabled.
Master and Caves are separate shards
A cluster running both Overworld and Caves needs a modoverrides.lua in both the Master/ and Caves/ shard folders. Put server-wide mods in both files. If a mod is enabled only in Master/, it will not automatically be active in Caves. Keep the two files synchronized unless a mod’s documentation explicitly calls for shard-specific behavior.
Step-by-step installation on a dedicated server
- Choose a small initial set. Start with one or two quality-of-life mods, such as Combined Status and Global Positions, rather than enabling the entire list. Record each Workshop ID and the intended settings.
- Subscribe from an administrator’s Steam account. Open each mod’s Workshop page and confirm that the item is the one you intend to use. A title match alone is not enough when similarly named versions exist.
- Edit
dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua. In the server installation’smodsfolder, add oneServerModSetup("MOD_ID")line per item, or add one collection declaration when you deliberately want the collection’s complete contents. - Start the server once. Let the server download the Workshop files, then stop it cleanly. Watch the startup output for download failures or a mod that cannot be mounted.
- Create or edit the shard overrides. Open the
Master/modoverrides.luafile and add an enabled entry for every selected mod. Repeat the same entries inCaves/modoverrides.luawhen the cluster has a Caves shard. - Use generated settings when possible. The faster way to avoid misspelled option names is to enable the mod in the game client, configure it through the available interface, and copy the generated
modoverrides.luablock into the server’s shard file. Then compare the copied block with the mod’s current documentation. - Restart and test. Join with one administrator account first. Check the HUD, map behavior, building placement, or other feature supplied by the mod before inviting the full group.
- Add the remaining clients. Tell every player exactly which Workshop items to subscribe to and which version of the game to launch. Keep a plain-text list of the active IDs so a replacement player can reproduce the setup.
Client requirements: does everyone need the same mods?
Players must subscribe to the same Workshop mods on their own Steam accounts. The dedicated server downloads files for itself; it does not automatically push client mod files to connecting players.
Requirements differ by mod. Global Positions is the clearest example: every client must run it or the map icons will not work for players who lack the mod. Treat any mod that changes the HUD, map, controls, or interface as a likely client requirement unless its current documentation says otherwise. Tell players to restart the game after subscribing so Steam finishes downloading the item before they connect.

Configuration rules that prevent common failures
Match option keys exactly
Configuration keys are not free-form labels. They must match the names expected by the mod. A misspelled key is ignored and the mod falls back to its default value, which can look like a server failure when the real problem is a spelling difference. Copy keys from the generated client file or the mod’s current documentation instead of typing them from memory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep Lua punctuation valid
A stray trailing comma, a missing comma between two entries, or an unmatched brace can prevent the whole table from loading. When adding several mods, make one change at a time and validate the file’s structure before adding another block. A minimal two-mod file should look like this:
return {
["workshop-FIRST_ID"] = { enabled = true },
["workshop-SECOND_ID"] = { enabled = true }
}
Do not confuse download and enablement
If the server log shows a successful Workshop download but the feature is absent in game, inspect modoverrides.lua first. Conversely, an enabled entry cannot work if the server never downloaded the corresponding Workshop item.
Troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The server starts, but a mod does nothing. | The item was downloaded but not enabled, or it is enabled in the wrong shard. | Confirm the ["workshop-MOD_ID"] entry in the relevant shard’s modoverrides.lua, then repeat it in both Master and Caves when required. |
| Every setting appears to be ignored. | One or more option names do not match the mod’s expected keys. | Generate the block from the client or copy the current documented key names exactly. |
| The entire override file fails. | Lua punctuation is invalid. | Check commas, braces, quotation marks, and the final closing brace. Restore the last known-good backup and re-add entries one at a time. |
| A player cannot see teammate icons. | The player is not running Global Positions. | Have that player subscribe to the same Workshop item, allow Steam to finish downloading it, and restart the game. |
| Players disconnect after adding a mod. | The mod may be stale, incompatible, or conflicting with another item. | Stop the server, remove the newest mod from both the override file and the download list, restore a backup, and test the mod alone in a disposable world. |
| The server reports a missing Workshop item. | The ID is wrong, the item is unavailable, or the download did not complete. | Recheck the numeric ID on the Workshop page, restart the server, and inspect the startup output for the exact download error. |

Maintenance for a long-running world
Back up before every change
Copy the world save, both shard override files, and dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua before adding, removing, or updating a mod. Keep dated backups so you can identify which configuration was active when a problem appeared.
Update deliberately
Do not update several Workshop items immediately before a scheduled session. Change one item, start the server, load a test world, and have a client verify the feature. If the server becomes unstable, the last changed item is an obvious rollback candidate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Review old recommendations
Lists age quickly. For example, a Basically Average roundup was last updated on November 3, 2025, so it should not outweigh a current Workshop page or a newer 2026 compatibility report. Per-mod update dates in roundup excerpts are not a substitute for checking the item’s live Workshop history.
Keep a player-facing manifest
Maintain a short document containing each mod’s name, Workshop ID, whether clients must subscribe, and the shard files in which it is enabled. This turns a forgotten subscription or typo into a quick fix instead of a group-wide troubleshooting session.
Frequently asked questions
Can the server install mods for players automatically?
No. The server downloads its own copies, but players must subscribe through their own Steam accounts. A server can be correctly configured while a connecting player is still missing a required client-side mod.
Why does modoverrides.lua use workshop- when the setup file does not?
The two files use different formats. ServerModSetup takes the numeric Workshop ID as a string, while the override table identifies the installed item with the workshop- prefix. Omitting that prefix prevents the override from matching the downloaded mod.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do I need two override files if I run only the Overworld?
No. A single-shard server needs the override file for that shard. A cluster with both Master and Caves needs a file in each folder, with server-wide mods enabled in both.

What is the safest way to discover a mod’s configuration keys?
Enable and configure the mod in the game client, then copy the generated modoverrides.lua block. This reduces spelling errors, although you should still compare it with the mod’s current documentation before deploying.
Should I install Wormhole Marks because it has millions of subscribers?
Subscriber totals do not establish current compatibility. Because reports cited an update history dating to February 2016 alongside crash and disconnect complaints, inspect its current Workshop activity and recent comments first. Leave it out if the evidence does not show that it works reliably with your game version.
A practical starting configuration
For most new servers, install Combined Status first, then add Global Positions only after every regular player has confirmed they can subscribe. Add Geometric Placement for a construction-focused group or ActionQueue Reborn for a routine-heavy group. Treat Minimap HUD and Extra Equipment Slots as optional convenience layers, and reserve Uncompromising Mode for a group that explicitly wants a harder ruleset. Keep Wormhole Marks disabled unless a fresh Workshop check demonstrates that it is stable on your version.
