For dim, relatively still scenes, start with the widest available aperture and 24, 25, or 30 fps; for fast action, raise the frame rate when there is enough light; and for quick sharing, use Standard color. Choose D-Log M when you plan to grade the footage. Treat these as starting points: the camera’s available combinations depend on the selected mode and aspect ratio.
Which settings should you use for each scene?
| Scene or goal | Useful starting point | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dim scene with little movement | Use the widest aperture available and try 24, 25, or 30 fps. Consider SuperNight if it suits the mode you need. | Lower frame rates suit modest movement, but can look less smooth for fast action. SuperNight does not guarantee noise-free footage. |
| Fast action in good light | Raise the frame rate for smoother motion or slow-motion flexibility; use stabilization for handheld movement. | High frame rates can show more noise or softer detail in dim conditions, and some combinations are unavailable. |
| Everyday clips for quick sharing | Use Standard color and a frame rate suited to the movement. | This avoids a grading step, but offers a different workflow from capturing in D-Log M for later color work. |
| Footage you intend to grade | Use D-Log M if your editing workflow supports grading. | Log footage is intended for post-production, not necessarily for ready-to-share appearance straight out of camera. |
The Action 6 has a 1/1.1-inch sensor and a variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture, according to DJI’s specifications. That gives you aperture choices, but it does not remove the compromises among light, motion, detail, stabilization, and post-production.

What settings should you use at night or in low light?
Start by letting in more light
Choose the widest aperture available for the selected mode. The lens reaches f/2.0, and DJI describes its low-light aperture behavior as “Maximizes aperture in low light.” Aperture options can vary by mode, so check what the camera actually offers rather than assuming every choice is available in every recording mode.
If the scene has modest movement, try 24, 25, or 30 fps before defaulting to 60 fps. This is a practical starting point, not a DJI-prescribed universal preset. In a 2026 review, Tom’s Guide observed more noise and softer detail at 4K/60fps than at 4K/30fps in its low-light conditions. That observation illustrates a trade-off; it is not a guaranteed result in every scene.

Try SuperNight, but judge the result
DJI lists SuperNight video at 4K, 2.7K, and 1080p, with listed frame rates from 24 through 60 fps. It is a model-specific option for dim scenes, but a higher frame rate can still cost image quality when light is scarce. Compare the clip at your intended frame rate and resolution, and inspect both motion and detail before relying on it.
Adjust exposure manually when needed
To change shutter speed and ISO, DJI’s Osmo Action 6 FAQ gives this control path: on the camera view, tap the Image/Audio Settings icon, enable PRO mode, then set Exposure to M (Manual). Make small adjustments and review how they affect motion rendering and visible noise rather than assuming one shutter or ISO value will suit every scene.
DJI’s published video ISO range is 100–51,200, but ISO 51,200 is available only in SuperNight; other video modes have a maximum of 25,600. In 8K, DJI lists maximum ISO values of 12,800 in normal color and 6,400 in D-Log M. These are mode limits, not recommendations to use the maximum. Higher ISO can help expose a dark scene, but check whether the added noise is acceptable for your shot.

Choose aperture behavior for the scene
DJI describes five Auto aperture ranges, from f/2.0–f/4.0 through f/2.8–f/4.0, with f/2.0–f/4.0 as the default. It also describes Starburst at f/4.0 for bright urban night scenes. Treat these as creative and lighting choices, not as a universal everyday preset; some aperture modes may not be available in SuperNight.
Which frame rate works best for fast motion?
For fast action, raise the frame rate when the scene is bright enough and smoother motion or slow-motion flexibility matters more than keeping the simplest low-light setup. DJI’s specifications list common 4K options through 60 fps, selected 4K modes at 100 or 120 fps, and 1080p options up to 200 or 240 fps. The available choices depend on recording mode and aspect ratio, so confirm the on-camera options for your intended format.
- Use a standard rate through 60 fps when you want a straightforward clip and do not need extreme slow motion.
- Consider higher frame rates when you specifically want slow-motion flexibility and have sufficient light.
- In dim conditions, prioritize the shot: reducing frame rate may help preserve detail, while a higher rate may better represent rapid movement.
There is no single frame rate that wins for every action shot. Choose according to how fast the subject moves, whether you want slow motion, and how much light is available.

How should you choose stabilization and horizon leveling?
For handheld movement, start with a stabilization option suited to the shot. DJI documents RockSteady and RockSteady+ as well as horizon correction modes. If keeping the horizon level matters more than retaining the widest field of view or every recording option, consider a horizon-leveling mode and check the resulting crop and available recording choices.

Check the on-camera choices for the exact recording setup you want. Stabilization is not automatically the right choice for every low-light clip; if electronic image stabilization does not meet the shot’s needs, DJI’s general Osmo Action series guidance suggests testing with EIS disabled. That is series-level guidance, so verify the Action 6’s available options and judge the result in your scene.

D-Log M for planned grading
Choose D-Log M when you intend to grade the footage and have a workflow that supports it. DJI says the profile distributes color more evenly to preserve fidelity in bright and dark portions of the scene and describes it as designed for professional color grading. Log is not automatically better for casual use: without grading, it may not give you the ready-to-share look you want.
Why might a setting be missing?
Not every resolution, frame rate, aperture behavior, stabilization option, color profile, and aspect ratio can be combined. DJI’s specifications and manual document recording constraints, but the exact options available depend on the selected mode. Set the intended resolution and aspect ratio first, then check the camera’s displayed choices for frame rate, stabilization, and other controls. If an option is unavailable, try a different combination rather than assuming the camera or setting is faulty.
Quick Recap
A practical way to settle on your settings
- Identify the priority: low-light detail, fast motion, horizon control, quick sharing, or later grading.
- Choose a recording mode and aspect ratio that suit the clip, then confirm which resolutions, frame rates, and stabilization options remain available.
- Set the frame rate for movement: start lower for a dim, relatively still scene; raise it for fast action or slow-motion plans when light allows.
- Choose the color workflow: Standard for quick sharing or D-Log M if you will grade.
- Record a short sample in the actual conditions and review motion, noise, detail, stabilization, and color before filming the important take.
